When you don't answer a call you could miss something important. Something like the hospital where your elderly father was taken 15 minutes ago after having a heart attack. Or the convenience store clerk where your daughter went for help when she wrecked her car and lost her cell phone.
I answer all calls. If its from a scammer I hang up on them.
Ignore the 'peanut gallery.' You are 100% right. If this is a caller who is legit, they will: (1.) leave a message. There is not a single ER RN in the country who would call you with an important notice about your loved one in the ER without leaving a message and a way for you to call back. Really. That RN doesn't exist. and, (2.) leave you with a *real* phone number or call you *pretending* (according to caller IC) to be someone else.
It's common sense. Don't let the shady types fool you.

After their relentless efforts, I started calling them back and talking with people and leaving messages. I asked if they have seen my lost puppy. I asked if they can give me a loan. I told them to call me at work and left the number for the Seattle FBI office. I told them I wanted to pay the debt and I will come to their office. I told them they will be served papers for impersonating law enforcement and illegal collection activities and that I am coming with law enforcement in 2 hours When they call me I answer "Pizza Hut", "Adult Emporium", etc. Then I started just picking the phone up, setting it down and walking away. I haven't received anymore calls. I know what numbers are valid and when I do and don't need to answer my phone. If it is important enough, they will leave a message. And no, they are NOT a valid collection agency. Review the posts on the FBI, Attorney General and BBB websites. This scam has been around for 5+ years. They just try to figure out better ways to do it, but they are not doing a good job. All these people are illiterate trash, they will eventually crawl back into their hole. By the way, I was told at least 5 times that the police would be at my house to arrest me in 2 hours, doesn't happen. If they threaten jail, ask them what jurisdiction, they have no clue.

I as well was contacted today with all the same threats of fraud, contacting my supervisor, seeing me in court and what not. When I asked them to send me something they denied. When I asked if they had a website, they never answered. When the “local” rep called me back (who they had never heard of when I called them about 20 min earlier) he declined to meet me at his office or at a neutral location, as in a coffee shop, like I recommended. This is a SCAM. Read your laws know your rights. DO NOT give any personal info on the phone.
Since receiving my call I did some research and these are the numbers that many have had to call for this same company. There is also a list of the names that different people were told who to call.
USC & Associates, USC Mediation, USC Mediation Law Firm, USC Litigation Firm, United Service Credit, Us Capitol, United Mediation Group
…and for all those that think I am trying to get out of a debt, no. All I want is a paper trail, not scare tactics

Here's a few numbers; i posted them on separate threads but ill list them all here as well:
1-877-673-8285 1-716-335-9443 1-888-484-3409
A gentleman contacted my parents, saying he had papers to deliver to me. He gave this number to my father so I could contact him. (fake process server scam, obviously) I called this number back, was told number was not in service. Called the number listed on the caller id and reached a company called Vantage. First woman I spoke to said she didnt know if it was a warrant for my arrest or a summons to appear in court, then placed me on hold for a few minutes. Another woman got on the line repeating the same thing, threatening me with theft of goods and service and some other thing she stated was a felony. Pressuring me to give them money. I asked who the original creditor was, but she told me it would be no good to contact them as Vantage was now representing them. I asked for a number to call back, then called my attorney.
I will also be contacting the attorney general, BBB, FTC, and whomever else I need to in order to make this stop. I have been receiving calls like this for years. I have no problem settling any debts I may have, but I will not take someone at face value and send them money without any documentation or proof. Anytime i asked for such, they avoided the question, even going so far as to state how long I would be held in jail before I could see a judge, etc. They're "debt collectors", not law enforcement officials. They knew all of my personal information including my social security number and I am irate. Getting ready to check my credit report as well.
