- FBIgirl replies to antwanetteI have had this same thing done to me. They have even threatened my life! Telling me I’m going to jail, that they will make sure I suffer. I called my Local Police, who came into my home and tried to call the number from my phone. It was a non-working Number.

- T| 1 replyReceived a message at work and on my cell from 1-866-949-9764 from John Crawford. They can't find me and this is a contact number. They need to serve me with a complaint and summons and the local police are coming after me. When I called the number I finally was able to get to a Steve Higgins who would not give me an address and says he is trying to collect on a debt from 2013 payday loan from a Shoreline LLC or Shoreline Corp. They refused to give me info unless I gave a social. I did not. The number states it is from China. Just giving everyone a head's up this is happening with different numbers.

- wallander replies to Resident47| 1 replyAppreciate the long and informative post. Thanks for letting us know that one can file lawsuits and that a debt collector would never use threatening language.
- Resident47 replies to wallanderCorrections before I say you're welcome: If debt collectors never were abusive or threatening there would be no explicit clauses in the FDCPA to control such behavior. The Act applies the same to real collectors and their posers, and whether or not the alleged debt is genuine. The Act does not pinch off room for all threats. They stand when they are not empty, promising likely results, and legal to carry out. All manner of threats have been tested in the courts, and those cases keep reteaching us that consumers cannot complain merely because the consequences of their actions are unpleasant.
Not all North Americans share a private right of action against their third party collectors. Too few US citizens sue their collectors as warranted, whereas last I read Canadians must hope their provincial authorities will defend their rights.
