They are spoofing (faking) the number - tells you a lot about the caller, doesn't it??

440-809-8372 is the latest a particular group has used to repeatedly call me.

They've been doing this for at least 7 or 8 years, maybe 10 or more.  Fortunately, my land line company offers blocking spoofed numbers, and has now for several months at least.  So those stopped.  But this group (all about supposed discounts on electric bills) actually go DOOR TO DOOR once or twice a year (last bothering me face to face only a couple of weeks ago-- which is really intrusive and annoying), and managed to get my cell phone number and have left voice mail almost every day this week.

Whatever scammers do this, I wish to hell they could be thrown in jail or something to stop it.  It's amazing how long it's gone on, and how they use every method of contacting me there is.

Your remarks a few hours prior in the correct thread should have sufficed, though I took the liberty of quoting the additional material seen here. As some of us keep trying to encourage, the number threads are the bread and butter of this site and naturally do a better job of organizing complaints by topic and source. By contrast, stuffing complaints down an area code catch-all is as good as burying them in a pile of irrelevance. There is rarely a useful pattern to be found in a grouping per one Ohio area code ... or DC or Errol NH or Kent WA or whatever region becomes flavor of the year.

If you call any of those 440 numbers you will find out either they are not working numbers or that the called party knows nothing about calling you. The reason being the numbers appearing on your caller ID are what we refer to as spoofing. They are not the real numbers of the people who are calling you. It is against federal law for anyone to spoof but they do it anyways using specialized equipment. I've noticed lately that the spoofing includes your own area code and your exchange (the first three digits) so you think it's a local call but it isn't. Most of the calls I get coming in now are robocalls. I get at least two a day on my cell phone and two on my house line each day. Having worked for Verizon Communications for 34 years I can tell you the phone company cannot stop these calls from coming to you. We advise people that when you receive one of these nuisance/scam calls immediately hang up on them. Don't bother to tell them that you are on the Do Not Call list because they don't care and it is unenforceable.

Well again we have an off topic post full of misinformation.  Exactly what law makes spoofing illegal?  The Truth in Caller ID Act?  That isn't even close to what it says.  There is a separate forum thread for the second part of your off topic post.  As to the DNC be "unenforceable", then I guess you should contact the defense attorneys of the two companies just fined $120 million and $82 million dollars for DNC violations.  They would probably like to know that the DNC in "unenforceable" and get their clients off the hook for those fines.

What about scamming and fraud on the game Words with Friends?  I've had several men requesting to play and immediately I'm "their soulmate and the love of their life". I got the phone # for one.  It's 440-409-7009. I'm waiting on his request for $$$.

What about inattentive use of this website? What about reading and studying before you post? We've had several recent thread pages in which half the remarks beg each casual user, just gliding in from a search engine, to please take advantage of the existing number thread structure. We got two comments like that right on this page. I'm waiting in futility for all of you to take the hint.

Not that I really expect you to come back and post in the correct place, nor do I expect you to actually give some details on what the scam was about.
