FTC Hangs Up On “Rachel From Cardholder Services”

“At the FTC, Rachel from Cardholder Services is public enemy number one,” said FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz. “We’re cracking down on illegal robocalls by bringing law enforcement actions and pursuing technical solutions to the problem.”

So, does this mean that resident47 will finally 'dissolve into the backround'?

I second loving that idea!  lol  And make sure the ringer is set to its loudest setting and is the most annoying ring-tone available.  lol

FINALLY, the FTC did something about these creeps.  I've reported those calls to the FTC many times and always received a form letter from them saying not enough info was provided, it wasn't a violation (which is total B.S.), or I could sue the company directly.  Right!  As if I, a mere consumer with limited resources, can find a scam artist hiding behind spoofed phone numbers and phone names.

I feel a bit more encouraged now.  The FTC's form letters are annoying and unhelpful but, if enough people gripe about these violators, apparently they do try to do something about it.  Yay!  Unless it was a politician who was annoyed by the calls (like the car warranty scam) and forced them to take action, then I'm back to being annoyed with them.

I do agree, however someone pointed out in another thread the fact that we should not have to buy additional things in order to have peace in our homes from the phones constant ringing. And I agree in that regard too. But I suppose one must do whatever one needs to do to get some semblance of peace because no one else cares about stopping these nuisance calls. I just hope to god they don't find a way around these call blockers......

If they find a way around the blockers, we'll have to manually ignore them and pray that they suffer slowly.

I got 1 call on the 17th, 1 on the 20th and 2 on the 21st.  So I'm going to say problem not solved.  Now I just talk to them as along as they will listen to waste their time and possibly not call me back.

I can only block so many different numbers from Rachael. Every so often I have to delete to add new ones.
I know the voice. "Rachael" has recorded messages for other companies. Between this one and the "free home security system" I get called every day. So tired of it.

Got another call from Card Services again today.  Apparently the FCC has no effect on these idiots.

Yes, you are right that the government is pretty toothless.  The FTC is restricted to assigning fines, not jail time.  If they can't put a single one of the crooks who crashed the entire economy in 2008 in jail, they're probably not going to catch these guys either, unless they are robbing banks on the side, then maybe they'd go to jail.  Bernie Madoff went to prison because he robbed a lot of rich people.

The key to blocking is to block the entire area code, if that's possible.    I blocked all the Pacific Telecom area codes (they provide most of the  service for "Rachel"-type scams)  and it greatly reduced the amount of robocalls I get.   Of course, I live in the Southeast, so blocking all those Northwest area codes isn't a problem for me.   If you live up there, may not work.

I do some VOIP work.  Rachel is a commercial voice model.  She can be hired for a ton of legitimate projects and may not have even known what these sleeze balls were up to when she recorded he message.  I generally use Allison Smith for similar legitimate work:

    http://theivrvoice.com/theivrvoice/

They probably paid her $50 for the recording one time.  I'm tempted to write a script on my Asterisks box to press "1" and have Allison tell them that she has is logs my "do not call violations" so that I can collect my $500 fine and request them to leave their information after the tone.

Doesn't seem to be too effective.  New number 914-594-9011 involved in the exact same old scam robocalled my place this morning.

Ever know of a bureaucrat that intentionally worked their way out of their job??? None of the FedGov termites have any interest in eliminating all of these scammers - it keeps them "working for the public good!"

How about we start charging our phone companies after notifying them of the number of the robocall, for every subsequent call they let through on their equipment? At $1 a call they'd owe me money at the end of the month!
