Last week, the Federal Trade Commission got a U.S. District Court in New York to shut down a robocall operation that allegedly scammed consumers by pretending to be the Federal Trade Commission.

- JAKE replies to yogi| 2 repliesRumor has it that due to the large volume of complaints, the FTC is now printing out our complaints on these special rolls of biodegradable paper. Once the roll is full it is stored until a sufficient number of them accumulate. Then they distribute them to all of the restrooms in the FTC office buildings for further processing and so that the complaints can be quickly "flushed" from their system. I guess that it is part of the paperwork reduction thing and saves money for the government.
- Fraud auditorThe big telecom companies go after these fraudsters with robo dialing because the bill them per minute to also rip you off. The FCC hasn't been helpful at all. The auditors for the telco's do the best they can by cutting off a primary source of funds and posts from end users like this really help!
- Bitchy replies to StopCallingMe| 1 replyRachel has just switched to calling cell phones. Just received one about 30 minutes ago.

- The Laughing man replies to BitchyRachel has been calling cell phones for years....
And anyone who puts their number in the "DNC" so the scammers can download the list and be sure never to call you!
Or maybe just call back and make sure you enter your number (and for that matter, all your numbers) into the "I want my number removed from the call list" prompts!
Right? they follow rules.
S-U-C-K-E-R-S!!!! - Ok... replies to JD| 4 repliesStop bringing politics into this list. This is a discussion list for scam callers. Not your nutcase political views.
Now go hide under the bed with your rosary beads and pray... - Computer guy.Investigate this stuff? there is a way to stop this nonsense. Why should anyone do anything for people who won't appreciate it anyway? $50,000 reward was nice to track down the jerks doing this, but supply a fix for no pay? Sorry....
(I hate to sound opportunistic, but like the rest of you who get paid working but goodwill doesn't pay for rent, groceries, etc.) - Russ in HoustonThe "Rachel" robocall message has been used by at least 20 different fraudulent operations (some of which may have been under the ownership of a repeat offender) as of the last time I checked. It's probably more like 30 or 40 now. Until we get this kind of crime turned into a jail-time offense for *everyone involved*, it's not going to do anything but get more common. There are too many screw-you-I'm-getting-mine-and-yours-too types out there who, sometimes inspired by the miswisdom of Ayn Rand, have decided that stealing whatever they want is their right. If we get to the point where the only way to stop them is with a guillotine, they're easy to build and easier to operate.
- hermitaged replies to Ok...OK - so you have just proved yourself an idiot. Of course politics is central to this issue - not just Democrats or Republicans, but all who relish their swill at the public trough. All politicians will make enough of the right sounds to be re-elected, but if enough problems were actually fixed, there would be no need for our (ever-expanding) corp of "fixers." Actual fixes by ANY level of government to any genuine problem is astoundingly rare. Why not instead, do what you can for yourself and take responsibility for your own fate.
Personally, I use CallClerk software and a cheap USB modem. You only have to put up with the first call and you then tell the software to block that number. YOU have now taken YOUR problem and fixed it. BTW, the software also writes a log file of all incoming calls with CID, reported telephone number, date and time - very handy for legal action or, if you insist, reporting to the FCC/FTC or your states' Attorney General. The software can do much more, but this works for me. - Alen replies to JAKE| 1 replySome put the blame on Government, FTC, or politicions, but I think it is more simple than that. Who provides your phone system? Right, the phone company. They should be able to redesign, patch or fix it so these unwanted calls can be blocked. Why don't they do that? Again, simple then they would lose a large percentage of their call volume, and of course revenue.
- msneInteresting how the FTC can shut down telemarketers pretending to be the FTC. But god forbid anyone could do anything about the 3-5 telemarketer calls I get per day on my land line and now even on my pre-paid cell! And 99.9% are robocalls.
If unemploymkent is still so high why not hire these unemployed people to go after the telemarketers? OH! I forgot. You put telemarketers out of business and then there's more unemployement! - Idiots replies to an0nWhat a Stupid Idea!! Hats off to you
- cassonly heard part of the robo--"let the memories begin"--Name not found on CID
- Big Ed| 2 repliesTime to take a different Approach..... Find a location where these people operate and about a dozen of us go thru the front door with sledge hammers..... If their equipment doesn't work, they can't call......
