Last week, the Federal Trade Commission got a U.S. District Court in New York to shut down a robocall operation that allegedly scammed consumers by pretending to be the Federal Trade Commission.

Is there anyone alive who does not already know that the national Do Not Call Register is totally ineffective, nothing more than a bad joke?  It won't stop anyone who believes they have the right to call you, and it certainly won't stop robo-dialers operated by companies that scoff at the DNC register.  Is there anyone who actually expects FTC action in response to complaints about DNC register violations?  I got a bridge to sell  you.

There is a much better way than the DNC register to quiet your telephone and calm your nerves.  Get a device of some sort to block unwanted callers.  There are several decent ones on the market.  Sure, they cost a bit, but I think paying a little is better than being disturbed by calls from folks (or robo-dialers) that I have no interest in talking to.

After much research, I chose the Call Blocker, a device marketed by Digitone.  Among its many fine features, it can be programmed to totally block specific numbers, or even whole area codes that I find troublesome.  Once blocked, those numbers cannot make my phone ring - not even once. If I want to be even more private, I can program the Call Blocker to silently snub all calls except those from my list of  "invited" callers.

BTW, I don't work for Digitone; just the opposite, their Call Blocker works for me.

    Screw it
If you have VoIP  just build a PBX and get rid of the sons of [***]. Look up Linux pbx, and ya it's free, just a learning something new is required :).

These calls often are from some small village in Pakistan so they can spoof the caller id. I'll bet that they're using Bin Ladins old compound as an outgoing call center. Preditor strike anyone?

Rachel is not a single outfit. Neither is Kevin. These are tapes that can be purchased from organized crime outfits. They are used by a number of different outfits. They are very hard to track down.

Ignoring them after the 1st time is fine for some people, but they create fake numbers everyday so we constantly have to update the block list. Not everyone feels okay giving these scammers what they deserve--well, what they deserve when you're not in close proximity to them. For some of us, there is more satisfaction in taking up their time, cussing them out, blasting feedback through the phone, or speculating how long they will survive when they become the prey in the most dangerous game.

You say Obama's money? This was going on during the Bush years, They also wanted Bush money. Come On! They want our money, our info and our life! I've been reporting these calls for YEARS, all they do is change numbers. Until the toll free numbers are listed by company no one is safe. The last ones I received is from a debtcollector, let it go to my answering machine, saying my name this time and saying I owed a debt. It is illlegal to do that, saying a person owes a debt. What happens when they call and leave a message to a wrong number?

I have said the same thing over and over. It's the phone company that gives out these toll free numbers so cheap to these crooks. They need to have a register of all of them names and contact info, just like our phone books and only give out one number to a business. Numbers outside the US should not be able to get through without a code given to them by the FCC,like the CB's used to be.I have filled my phones call block and don't have room for any other numbers, freaky but true I pushed block and it asys my call block is full. All toll free!

I got this call just last week, in spite of the info here that says this person has been shut down.
