Don't call the number left in the message.

Only call a known good number from your statement, back of credit card or from the bank's legitimate website.

That way you know for a fact you are dealing with the legitimate offices and not some scammer.

I called 800-494-6822 back and it was in fact Citi's fraud protection. It was not necessary to enter any personally identifying information, the automated system already knew who I was and only asked for my zip to verify my identity. Once verified the automated voice asked me to verify if I authorized a transaction that occurred today. That's all.

I called 800-494-6822 back and it was the Citi's fraud protection verifying a charge on my son's CC. He's oversea right now, You only enter your ZIP code to identify yourdelf. They capture your phone number when you return the call and verify it against the phone number on record.

A legimate Citi bank fraud department number. But the citibank customer serivice, which I suspect located in India, did not recognize this phone number. Nontheless, this phone number did not ask for much personal info, just your zip code. This number is not listed in Citibank website -- don't know why.

I called the number on the back of my citibank debit card and the rep confirmed that is the number of their fraud dept and that dept did try to contact me regarding some of my citibank transactions. So it seems to be legit.

Got a text first from them, then got a phone call asking for a person that is not me (automated message). Called Citi they said it's not them and to disregard. I am going to.
They wanted to discuss suspicious transfer of $1k on my account.

I called Citibank directly using a number on their website.  They confirmed the following:
    1)  My Citibank account is inactive and has not been used in several years.
    2)  No one in the fraud department made the call.
    3)  The phone number is not a citibank number.

They told me to disregard the call, but that they will phone the number themselves and try to find out who is pretending to be calling from Citibank.

Huh.  My girlfriend is overseas at the time of this post and at 7:32 PM on 11/13/2012 I received a message on my answering machine saying hrt exact name, the cardholder, should call them asap.  Now that I read all of these complaints on this site saying its ' legitimate ' and it's bogus all at the same time, I'm left wondering what's up.

Always proceed with caution concerning such calls tho a rational person ought to know that instinctively.

I suppose one should call the # on their Citibank card and tell them you're going overseas so they don't cancel your card on you while you're away.  And your cell phone should be on their records... duh... if they're getting charges to your account from overseas you sure ain't going to answer your home phone.

And how is it my CID says the caller's name is " Unavailable " ?  Legitimate businesses don't operate that way.

What a cheap shot !  Now even THIS site is telemarketing !  Notice the above.

Anyway, these alleged Citibank people called twice today.  Don't fall for the story that by calling them back at the CID # and having them tell you they * are * Citibank that they really are Citibank.  Crooks use masks to hide their real identity and the callers' CID name is " unavailable."  So I'm supposed to believe its Citibank,
    huh ?  My .44 !

Please DO NOT CALL that number !!!
I got text message first from these fraudsters about three (3) weeks and followed by phone calls stating my Citibank issued card was charges in the amount of $200 plus at Mexico City-Mexico. They wanted me to confirm the statement. That sounded weired so I check my card activities and there was no unauthorized charges. So I called Citibank number on the back of my card and they told me that the number that called was not associated with Citibank at all. They also said no charge to that amount was charged to my account. So Citibank told me they will watching my account.
