It's not phishing. I called up the number on back of my credit card, because I read through these posts first and was afraid it was some kind of fraud.

When I called I was told that AMEX used different phone numbers for their fraudulent investigation department. So it was a legit e-mail after all.

Someone was charging different amounts under $ 1.000,-- in the UK on my credit card.
Call the number on the back of your credit card if you still don't trust the e-mail and phone number you received.

Anyways I was told to destroy my card and that I would receive a new one shortly.

This is not a fraudulent number.  This is another number with American Express to confirm that a charge was added to your card.  They only ask for your card number in order to identify you and then they ask you if the charge is familiar to you.  You confirm it and they mark your account as ok. If you don't call this number?  They'll freeze your card and you'll have to call in.  Whoever said this is a fraudulent number doesn't own an American Express card.

The number and call from AMEX is correct, but it is always wise to be on guard for scams.  The best practice is always to call the number on the back of your card.  Consider that a "professional" scamer/group will actually tell you to call the number on your card and then hope you proceed with them believing the call is from AMEX.  Scammers best weapons are greed and laziness.

    Sure it is a scam
They keep calling my 12 year old son's cell phone.  We have no credit cards period, and there is no reason for anyone to have his number.  Something smells rotten in Denmark.

It is DEFINITELY a fraud.  We received a call from this number  800-824-9289 which said it was American Express.  They ask for all of your security info.  We sensed a fraud and called AmEx. They clearly stated 800-824-9289 is NOT an American Express  number and it NEVER was.

You make no sense. If my ID was stolen and used to open an AmEx account, then my contact info like phone number would *NOT* be used on the account because the criminal would never want AmEx to contact the real me.

    It's A Fraud
Received bogus calls from this number - heavy accent asking for card information claiming there was a "fraud alert."  After contacting American Express, I found out there was no problem with the card.  Also, they had not called me from this number.  This is a fraud - beware.

I received a mail from PO Box 297812 Ft Lauderdale Florida 33329-7812 with the exactly the same information. The letter was printed on an American Express looking letter head. It looked very official. It showed the last 4 digit of my credit card, a valid looking transaction and an obvious looking fake transaction. It then tells me to call 18008249289 or collect 336-393-1111 to confirm the charges. The letter is signed by R. Bauer, American Express Worldwide Fraud Prevention. I called the 1-800-824-9289 at 5:45 pacific. I got an automated receptionist telling me to punch a number to have a "good time"! I hanged up. I thought I dialed the number wrong so I tried again. I got the same machine message. I hanged up again. I went to my Amex online account to confirm the quoted charge in the letter. The charges were not there. I googled the number and saw this page and others indicating that this number is fraudulent (perpetrates fraudulent scheme). I agree this number and the letter I received was fraudulent. I also agree with the other posters from other sites. Don't call this number. If you want to call Amex, call the number on the back of your card. If you are paranoid, cancel the card or get a new card. I also noticed, from other sites discussing this number, there are posters that claim to be with Amex and states the number is a valid Amex fraud verification line. I suspect these are the same people who are perpetrating the fraud.

Well, this site is pretty useless, isn't it?  There is no authentication, any troll can write anything they please.  (I am using my real name, BTW.)

It's easy to verify that the number is valid.  Call the number on the back of your card (you trust that one, right?) and they'll tell you that the other number is a valid Amex number.  Don't trust me, just call.

The reason why I asked for the verification---and you should do the same---is because the Amex folks are IDIOTS, and if enough people call, they may realize it.  There is no simple way of telling that their warning email is not a phishing attempt.  Their email should say "call the number in the back of your card", not a random phone number.  Instead, after you call the random phone number, they ask YOU to authenticate yourself.

I was WAY too nice to them, probably because I was concerned about the unauthorized charge (I hope it was unauthorized---information was scant).  THEY ASKED ME TO GIVE THEM INFORMATION IN A SETTING THAT COULD HAVE BEEN A PERFECT PHISHING ATTEMPT.  It is terrible customer education!

So, don't trust anything I say, even if I sound perfectly convincing.  Phishers can be this good.  Call the number on the back of your card, ask for clarification.  And after that, you'll agree with me.

    Anything you say shill.

The number is fake - don't be fooled folks!!

The number of fake reviews claiming the number is real make this fraud very obvious - along with the shills desperately responding everytime genuine complaint about this fraud is posted here.

Beware of the shill postings about this AMEX phishing fraud!
