HSBC Fraud Prevention.

I called HSBC directly & they claimed it's not one of their numbers & very likely a scam.

They left a message on my machine claiming to be HSBC Fraud Prevention.  When I tried calling back twice (with no intentions of giving them any information, just to see what it was all about), the call kept disconnecting.  My first clue that it was indeed some type of scam was that no company was identified at any time.  Even in the beginning, it just said, "This call may be monitored for your protection" ... yeah, right!

This number is valid. It's for HSBC Checking/Savings, not for HSBC Credit. Just called them and everything was legit. They were checking due to a large check I had written out and wanted to make sure it was indeed I who wrote it.

Part of a fraud campaign targeting numerous financial institutions.  Note the pattern of shill postings all claiming the number is real - an obvious giveaway.

The large number of phony posts claiming the call is real come from some con artists spamming the site to try to fool people.  There is a similar pattern to other fake calls claiming to be from HSBC, Chase, Citibank, Bank of America, US Bank, Wells Fargo, RBC, PayPal, etc. all with the same shill postings:

It's NOT valid.  I just got off the phone with the actual HSBC and the number is not one of theirs.  Phishing scam that gets you to give them "sensitive information."

866-839-9194 was a call from the HSBC fraud prevention department.    At first, it seemed like a fraudulent call, so I called the regular number for HSBC 800-975-4722 and they connected me to the fraud prevention department which verified that they actually did call to verify some account activity to confirm that the activity was correct.

Got a message on my machine from HSBC Fraud prevention.  Followed another responder and contacted HSBC via main number and had to wait a long time (15 mins).  They first tried the credit card fraud group & no issues there. That dept advised them to contact the check department after waiting another 15mins I was finally transferred to someone that confirmed that they were reaching me to confirm a $500 check.  I think mostly because I never use this account to write checks.  If I had to do it over again, I wouldn't call the main number.  I'd try the number left and let them know I didn't feel comfortable and ask them to give me information on my account before divulging too much.  Or maybe try HSBC at a different time.

You can't trust HSBC to know which numbers are valid and which aren't.  They're too big and too poorly run to be efficient.  This number is indeed valid for the check/savings prevention not for credit card.

I got also a call and I called back to the HSBC bank main number. They transfer me to the fraud department and the call was legit. I had printed 2 checks with the same number and they wanted to verify my check. The 866 number is legit.   Nov. 29, 2012

This is for the HSBC Check Fraud Department.  I called main # and they were able to confirm there was a call out to me and transferred me over to the proper department.

It never hurts to call the main #, but this is a good #.

Confirming that this number is valid. I called the main HSBC number on the back of my ATM card and they verified it as their Fraud Unit.

all details of recent cheques I wrote.

It's a real HSBC number.  They can tell me which checks I wrote and for what amount.  They just wanted to verify if I in fact wrote a big check.

This is a valid number. If you're uncomfortable with the questions they're asking you can request different questions. I only answered questions that would not enable fraud. I also called the main HSBC line after the call and they confirmed it was legitimate. In fact, the details of my conversation with the Fraud Dept. were already logged in their main system.

This is a valid HSBC number.  They called to verify a check that I wrote was intentional (they had the check # and the amount)-  asked for no personal information, no account information or any other identifying information.

First time I got a call from this # 866-839-9154, it was from HSBC marketing a credit card sign up, so I classified it as spam.

Second time, it was right after a wrote a large check and it appears to be the HSBC fraud prevention group calling me to verify, so I have to unblock it as not spam.

866 839 9154 is a valid number. I had a missed call, when I called back I asked them how I could confirm. They suggested I ring the number on the back of my card, which I did, and I was transferred back to the original department. The number is for the cheque fraud protection department.
