I got a call from this number. They knew my name and knew I was part of bank of America. But when I googled it, this number did not show up anywhere. This number is different from the main office and any of the other websites connecting it. I know 888 is normally a telemarketing number, so I just want to know if I should call them back of not.

I got a call from this number today, 1/14/2012- it is Bank of America fraud detection services direct line, and is a brand new number.  They called to notify me that my debit card account had been compromised and were calling to verify charges made.  I told them I felt uncomfortable speaking with them because it wasn't a number that showed up as BoA, and they suggested I call the number on the back of my card to verify.  I did so, and sure enough someone had used a card verification service with my card number.

Folks, most of the above if not all comments are shill comments for this likely SCAMMER phone number pretending to be BofA.
The usual SCAM is to have you listen to your alleged last 5 transactions (they are FAKE), you panic, you press #X for a SCAMMER rep who will STEAL your ID and account info -- this is why it is CRITICAL for the SCAMMERS to have you believe this number is BofA (and it is NOT).
    1.  SCAMMERS post LIES on 800notes to convince potential victims that this is a legit number (and it is NOT).
    2.  CallerID is *NOT* a trusted source for legit phone numbers  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caller_ID_spoofing
    3.  If this number calls you, DON'T answer or give away any info.
    4.  NEVER call this number back or ANY bank number supplied by a stranger.
    5.  If you need to call the bank, use a number from a TRUSTED SOURCE (back of card, bank statement, website, phone book)

Igot a call from this # stating charges had been made using my card. Nothing was asked to provide any personal info. She told me the last 4#'s of my card. She questioned transactions that some were made by me and others I hadnt made. They were removed and everything is fine.  Always remember to NEVER GIVE PERSONAL INFO TO CALLERS. ONLY TO PEOPLE YOU CALL AND KNOW ARE LEGIT. ALWAYS ASKED FOR THEIR NAME.. IF ITS FALSE THEY CAN BE ALSO CHARGED FOR PROVIDING FALSE INFO ALONG WITH FRAUD IF THEY ARE SCAMMERS.

It IS BoA Fraud services.  I just got a call from them and ignored it - meanwhile, my credit card was rejected for an online purchase, so I called them.  Literally within minutes of their phone call, they verified that they had locked that card due to me trying to buy something "new" online (a company I'd never used before).  They removed the block and now I'm good to go.

I monitor my account daily, so you can imagine how I felt after getting a call from this number on top of being already naturally suspicious, I called the general BoA customer service number from their website (which is the same number on the back of my debit card) as I did not want to call back that number.  They transferred me to the fraud department who confirmed that they had called me. Apparently they thought my latest purchase, an international phone card from Vonage, that I had purchased online for $25, was suspicious. As a side note, they also flagged my gym membership. After I confirmed that I had bought the phone card, and questioned them about red flagging the gym membership since that comes out every month automatically. I asked why this was the first time I ever got a call like this, especially since I've had the account for years - I had this account before they were Bank of America.  They said they just want to protect me as there has been a lot of fraud recently. Can this actually mean they had a breach in security and are now trying to cover themselves? Or are they just monitoring accounts and these transactions happened to get red flagged? I can see how some of the above posters might think there are plants here, so if you are still concerned, call the number on the back of your card and go that route.  That's probably the smartest option. That's what I did, and by doing so, they will confirm whether the fraud department actually called you or not, and they can go over your charges with you in the same phone call.

I called BOFA from back of my credit card they (BOFA) verified that this is not a BOFA number (888-726-2644). If you call they say card services and they take all of your info for security reason do not disclose any imprtant personal numbers. Please always call the known phone number from back of your card/website to verify the fraud or for any reason.

This is a valid number to BOA fraud unit.  Just got a call from them about an unusual charge.  I told them I'd call them back and called the number on the back of my Credit Card.  He told me that the number was valid and they do indeed have a charge that has been flagged.

Got a call from this number this morning.  Naturally I was suspicious about the claim that there's a security breach or suspicious activity involving my ATMS card.  So hung up and checked my account online (nothing unusual) and discovered an email from BOA saying that due to suspicious activity my ATM card is suspended and I should call, guess what, this very number that called me.  While this seems to have authenticated the number I decided to just go to the branch nearby to get this straightened out (since I was put on hold forever trying to call through customer service).  At the branch they told me that there has indeed been a system wide security breach affecting an undisclosed number of customers so they are canceling all the affected cards and sending new cards.  The inconvenience is that I won't be able to use the ATM until I receive the new card.

So anyway.  Bottom line, the number seems legit.  However I still wouldn't give out any info they don't already have over the phone to someone whose identity I cannot be sure of.
