- AnonymOne reason they might call after you get a new number is that someone used to have that number, and they're trying to collect on that person's debt. I think in my case, they're trying to collect on a debt from someone who no longer has my number. I think that because I've had debt collectors call for him in the past. But I have never answered calls from PRA because I don't think it will do any good. And I don't think they're legit collectors. After I started getting calls from another company, I found out about junk debt collectors. Do a Google search. It opened my eyes. Even if I could hook them up with the person who used to have my number, I wouldn't.
- AnonymCall looking for my ex! I got this number way after the divorce! Now I get debt collectors looking for him?......

- chocolateyMy boyfriend got a call from these morons today...on HIS phone, not mine...of course he goes and hands it to me and smiles about it. They want to collect an old debt from when I was 18 years old, 11 years ago. Isn't there a limitation on stuff like this? The lady was a jerk and I called her a pretty name...oh well, today hasn't been a good day to begin with! Anyway...I don't know how they got me from his number. He's such an idiot now I'm sure they will be calling him non stop.

- Peter ZiomekThis company has called our house many times a month over the past few months even though my wife has answered the call and have asked them to remove us from their calling list and yet they continue to call us.

- Tammie replies to spazI also get these calls and never leave answer or answer when I do pick up. I have call block and they still get through
How do I stop!!!! - McFraudI too get calls from this company. They are not subject to the Do Not Call List, they aren't telmarketers. They buy old, sometimes very old, debt for pennies on the dollar. They can't sue. They can't put the debt on your credit report. All they can do is call and call and call. I assume some people pay to stop the calling.
I used to get several calls a week for a debt I thought was paid off but I don't keep records for 20 years. So my reply was, "I don't know what you are talking about. If you think I owe you money, sue me." The calls went to once a week to once a month. Act dumb and tell them you have no idea what they are talking about and to sue you. Since they know they can't sue you, they call less frequently.
I can play dumb very well and waste their time. The lonnger you keep them on the phone without a positive result to them, the less frequent the calls will come.- Caller: PORTFOLIO RECOVERY

- J.J.When the phone rings, I check the phone number. If I don't recognize the area code, "Name Unknown," I don't answer. When I check, if the ID reads, "Name Unknown," I don't respond; or, if it's important enough, the caller will leave a message. At least Verizon leaves a message I can check.

- JimA couple of items of information. First - These people have a bunch of numbers they call from so you likely won't be able to block them all.
I just don't answer calls that are from numbers that I don't have listed in my cell phone directory. If I miss a call from a friend who has a new number, no big deal. they leave a message.
Portfolio Recovery has never left a message. the only way I know it's them is by looking it up on sites like this one. Then I add the latest number to my directory listing for them and if they use that number again I know it's them. .
Second - For those of you trying to rely on the Do Not Call List - forget it. That doesn't cover debt collectors -just telemarketers. For information on how to deal with debt collectors check the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. You can find it here:

- The Phone Harassment VigilanteTrying to collect on a 10yo charged off debt. This should be illegal. They do use intimidation/legal threats to get you to pay even though the debt doesn't even exist anymore. I like to lead them on as if I'm going to pay and then I use a blowhorn or other loud, noise making device. I know it's a pain, but I suggest doing the same thing, people. If enough people start doing the same thing, over and over again, that causes pain/discomfort to the Do*chebags doing the harassing, they will get sick of it & hopefully stop. It's worth a try, right? A little bit of payback for thieves & cowards? I think it's worth it. A sports whistle, blowhorn, bell, even 2 pots bagging together....it's time to fight back....
