- William| 1 replyThis number called me yesterday afternoon. I called them back and got a voicemail. Mike called me back at 8:43am and I couldn't answer my phone because I am at work. He immediately called many other relative's phone numbers including cell numbers for my relatives. I have no idea how he found those cell numbers, they don't even have the same last name as I do. Very frustrating and harrassing for everyone involved. When I finally got a hold of Mike, I found out this is for a debt that I had paid in full two months ago.

- Alfalfa replies to WilliamHow can I verify whether or not a debt collector is legitimate?
Here are a few warning signs that could signal a debt collection scam:
The debt collector threatens you. Legitimate debt collectors probably won't claim that they'll have you arrested or claim that they or their employees are law enforcement officers.
The debt collector refuses to give you information about your debt or is trying to collect a debt you do not recognize. You have certain rights to ask a debt collector to verify the debt. You can use this sample letter to request this information. Ask for an explanation in writing before you pay.
The debt collector refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number.
The debt collector asks you for sensitive personal financial information. You should never provide anyone with your personal financial information unless you are sure they're legitimate.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his or her name, company, street address, telephone number, and professional license number. Many states require debt collectors to be licensed. Check the information the caller provides you with your state officials, or the state in which the debt collector holds a license. If the caller refuses or is unable to provide you with information about his company, or if you can’t verify the information he provides, do not give money to the caller or company.
Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." This notice must include:
The amount of the debt
The name of the creditor you owe
A description of certain rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, consider requesting this information in writing or seeking assistance before paying the debt to make sure the debt, and the company, are valid.
Tip: You can consider sending the collector a letter requesting the information by using one of the CFPB's sample letters. You can also submit a complaint to the CFPB or you can contact your state Attorney General’s office.
Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know the company or person you are talking with is a real debt collector. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft such as:
Charging your existing credit cards
Opening new credit card or checking accounts
Writing fraudulent checks
Taking out loans in your name
Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
Report the call. Submit a complaint with the CFPB or get in touch with your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers.
Stop speaking with the caller. If nothing else works and you believe the calls are fraudulent, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files.
Tip: You can use this sample letter to write a letter demanding the debt collector stop contacting you. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
Tip: If you're having trouble with debt collection, you can submit a complaint with the CFPB online or by calling (855) 411-CFPB (2372).
http://www.consumerfinance.gov/ - Josh replies to bob, fred and frankI don't know about other states but in WI if you can record the calls, just for proof, after telling them that they have wrong number if they call back again you are able to sue them for $500 plus court fees for some type of harassment. Bet they don't call again after that.

- NotGoingToAnswerThey just called me. I was so lucky that when I got a new phone that I didn't set up the voicemail. Now, if I don't recognize a phone number, I don't answer the phone. It goes straight to... Oh, that's right, I don't have my voicemail set up so it goes nowhere. Best thing I ever did was NOT set up the voice mail when my ex gave them my current phone number.

- DeeRec'd call from this number, very poor connection so I hung up. Same number called right back - VERY NASTY man - gave me an attitude about hanging up on him so I let him have it! He only gave me his name and not who he was representing - which is very unprofessional - turned out he was looking for an ex-employee who hasn't been in our employ for 5 yrs! Idiot, he needs to learn how to present himself while using a phone!

- Judy replies to 2152444200I thought it was against FCC regulations to make sales or debt collection calls on Sundays. Just another rule for them not to follow or be held accountable for I guess. My company does not allow it.

- WolfmanJackYou need to send them a certified, return receipt debt validation, cease and desist calling, or "not me" letter. You also need to report them to the proper agencies to which I have provided links to. Then you need to go out and get a consumer lawyer to sue them on a contingency basis (no money out of your pocket) and let them pay you for the harassment. If everyone did these three things, these crooks would be bankrupt and we would all be the richer for it.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
Read up on your rights here, get template letters to send and also make a complaint at this government site: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/

- bill g| 1 replyI cant believe I am going to say this but I spoke to Jody Campbell xt.1155 and Kelly Wagner xt. 1372 both were very nice, very courteous and very professional. They both declared themselves as debt collectors, they identified there place of business and work address, essentially following the Fair Debt Rules!!! I explained to them that I am currently trying to get SSDI and that the debt is real, now I know by law they could never collect on that debt if they could ever sue me, but that doesn't make things right the debt was still made and I want to pay it off. The debt was for a car loan which in it self was a predatory loan and the vehicle was repossessed 5 years ago Kelly understanding my situation was willing to take 100.00 dollars a month, which I can afford till the life of the loan is paid, no more interest, penalties etc. and when I get my SSDI settlement they will work out a settlement with me. I thought that was pretty fair, there was another debt collection company before this one that handled this account they were horrible I did a cease and desist letter on them because they were so rude!!! So maybe this company has turned legit, I cant say but can only report my experience, best of luck to the rest of you all !!!
