Again THIS IS NOT THE IRS. It is the Tax Advocate's office that works with members of Congress to act as a go-between with their constituents who are having problems with the IRS. You have to have talked with your Senator or Congressperson's office and asked for help with an IRS matter. They then turn the matter over to the Tax Advocate's office. They aren't calling you out of the blue. You've at some point asked for help with an IRS problem and that matter has been turned over to them. They are not part of the IRS. They work for Congress.

This is a number from the IRS.  But if you get a call, it's regarding an issue that is already underway.  You do not get a cold call from the IRS.  If this call is out of the blue and you haven't been dealing with anyone from the IRS after being contacted via regular mail, ignore it: the number likely is being spoofed.

If you are dealing with the IRS already, this is a legitimate phone call!  Finally if you still aren't sure, ask them to mail you a letter since they already have your address (do not give it!).

Wrong.  The Taxpayer Advocate's office is an independent division but THEY ARE PART OF THE IRS.  Anyone can do a simple search to verify this.

If you didn't initiate contact before the call, this IS A SCAM.  Unless you expect a call from them (IRS, Taxpayer Advocate) then don't answer.  While this may be a TA number in NH, scammers have no problem spoofing it.  Regardless, don't give them any personal information, have them send you a form to your address of record (they should have it).  Again, IF YOU DIDN'T CONTACT THEM, THIS IS A SCAM.

The original number was 703-336-4137, called  back out curiosity and a call came in immediately from  304-350-7010. No one in government calls back that quick & keeps calling without leaving messages.

I am in Calif. and this showed up at an irs in WV? no message left?

Agree -- I had a call into the IRS (I am located in California) - the call received from this number was in follow-up to my call.  But as you mention -- the number can be spoofed.

Got a call at our office this morning.  The originating # is from WV.  The call back # is very suspicious... called and it sounded like a personal cell phone #.  Message said they had to "make an appointment immediately."  I've never head dealings with the IRS that didn't begin with a letter.  Very, very suspicious!!

It's the IRS -- I'm dealing with an auditor there and they even say if you're trying to call an IRS employee you have a case with, hang up and dial the number in your official correspondence. I wish it was a spoof! Better a spoof than an audit.

This is a real extension at IRS. It is an agent our business is working with.

The number might be legit, but these overseas scammers can easily spoof the caller ID and IMPERSONATE the irs.
