The Taxpayer Advocate does work for the IRS as a watchdog and ombudsman. I learned of TAS a few years back when studying the private collector debacle, which this group has handily exposed each time the IRS is forced to farm out aged accounts. TAS would naturally generate outbound calls in response to inquiries. I have trouble imagining what would prompt cold calls.

    Got it - Thanks.
I agree, making cold calls, esp during tax time in today's uncertainty seem unlikely. I am guessing Taxpayer Advocates are getting more calls than they can handle without looking for more.

My Caller ID showed "U.S. Government" so I picked up...It was a woman who identified as "Yolanda Jones"
calling about my IRS "appeal" ...told her I had no appeal, but she did have most of the facts of an ongoing contest I've been having with the IRS on $$ I think they owe me...I was running late for an appt. so she gave me her number to call back (265-941-6147)...when I called I got a message this was not a valid number. ..perhaps I wrote down the wrong number...go figure

If this was a legitimate call, the agent would have identified who they were calling from.  I received a call from this number, but asked me to call back at a different number in New York - 631-977-6584.  The woman identified herself by name, which as probably a lie, did not state where she was calling from, only the timeframe she would be in the office.  Totally vague with a return phone call number in a completely different state.  This has FAKE written all over it.   If you get a call from a legitimate tax advocate office, tell them to change their phone number it is likely being spoofed!  This is a total bogus call I received as I have no dealings with the IRS....  its a spoofed phone number.  You are better off calling this number back directly and asking your own questions.

So you're both sure and not sure the caller is "valid". Uh-huh. Apparently you have internet access. Nothing stops you from seeking your own answers straight from the TAS.

I should have realized sooner that the real IRS might have issued some alert about its impostors posing as its Taxpayer Advocate Service. They did so, and fifteen whole months ago. Excerpts follow:
"In this most recent scam variation, callers “spoof” the telephone number of the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service office ... Once the taxpayer returns the call, the con artist requests personal information ...... In other variations of the IRS impersonation phone scam, fraudsters demand immediate payment of taxes by a prepaid debit card or wire transfer. The callers are often hostile and abusive."

I also see that I was dead right in speculating on how TAS uses the phone:
"TAS does not initiate calls to taxpayers “out of the blue.” Typically, a taxpayer would contact TAS for help first, and only then would TAS reach out to the taxpayer."

IRS warns of new phone scam using Taxpayer Advocate Service numbers - IRS alert, 15 Mar 2019, last update 22 May 2020

Not matching this thread, the TAS lists a different phone number for West Virginia -- same area code but in exchange 420. This proves nothing on its own, given that a single office might host dozens of numbers and/or link to satellite offices. What's more, per the TAS contact page, the world's favorite virus is complicating efforts to verify unpublished phone numbers:

"Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) employees are teleworking, sheltering at home and working to serve our taxpayers. We are experiencing delays and interruptions in working cases due to IRS services being limited. These limited services are also causing a high call volume to our organization resulting in delays in our response times. Please be patient."

The YouMail page for this #7010 hosts three messages from the past year, all marked "spam" by their uploaders. Yet they all sound like follow-ons to open cases. They're entirely too detailed to come from frauds who generally count on a fast kill. There's room to imagine that the "spam" calls were honest misdialing errors.

I got a call from this number. They left a voicemail saying they were calling about my offer in compromise for back taxes. I filed my paperwork several months ago so it seems legit. But they gave me a New York number to call which I can't verify online.

Perhaps you should read the other posts because from what I just read this call is nowhere near "legit".

    @WORK
Several missed calls only ID'd as US GOV.
After third call, I answered to silence. I called and a recording ID the number as the internal revenue and that an agent may be trying to reach you or have left a message and will try calling several times until they reach you. It also says to try contacting using the number provided on the IRS website.
Sounds phishy, scammish & spammish especially with silence when answered.

First calls (Missed) of the day. Received many calls from this number yesterday ID only as US GOV. Didn't amswer most but when I did, silence on the other end.
Today started off with 6 calls the second I answered with silence on the line. The last call a message was left.
A man named Ryan Ebberhardt or Ebberhard calling about a letter he "believe" was sent on 15 June and wanting to see if it was received and wanted a return call at 443 853 5342. It was about "Your" retirement plan.

    Who is "Your"?
Calling about a retirement plan & from a number ID as UD GOV but wanting a return call to a different number???

Missed call with USGOV ID. I answered when the call came through for a second time. Gentlaman (whos voice was the same as the message left weeks ago) asked if he had reached (our organization) which i said yes. He then inquired about a letter sent to (reciting our mailing address) which was correct and proceeced to ask about a letter sent. I asked who did he address the letter to at the address. He mentiond a person who was no longer working. I asked what was the letter concerning, he replied a retirement plan. Confused, a letter sent to us about a retirement plan??? I said I am not familiar with the letter. He then started inquiring about me being an employee and....I politely interrupted him and offered to connect him to our business office which I did.

I contacted the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service via the Local office in Baltimore.  Since difficult to get someone to answer, I initiated the contact by faxing a completed form 911 to the number on their website: https://www.irs.gov/advocate/local-taxpayer-advocate#Maryland

One week later I received a call from 304-350-7010.  The woman identified herself as being from the LTA office and gave me a case number and requested info about my withholding.  She also gave me a callback number that is the same as the number on the LTA website.

If this was a scammer, it is awfully coincidental that I got the call 1 week after faxing the LTA.  It is much more likely that this person was legitimately from the LTA.  Also, the basic withholding information she requested does not seem very useful to a scammer.
