The first contact IRS makes is a letter sent first class mail.  Several more are sent.  Ignore those and they send out some certified ones.  Ignore those and they simply attach whatever bank accounts, etc you might have in your name.  No reason for them to call you.

This is the IRS.  But I believe they only call if they have talked to you in person prior to the call.

Nope, I just talked to an agent that I have met in person.  The number is REAL.  Submitted a tax return that needed a correction. I guess all IRS agencies use this number, no matter the location.  Which is probably why it's spoofed at times.  Use caution, but the number is legitimate.

I got a call from this number and sent it to VM. A lady named Ms Pontillo left a message asking to call back and it was in regards to an application we had. She didn’t give too icy details but the number she left was 631-977-6546. I called and got an answering machine so I hung up. It didn’t say anything about the IRS!

That statement is simply not true, I have had many calls from the IRS after calling the main toll free number and leaving a message. Shortly after I was contacted from this very number returning my call. Your call could have been a scammer using their number just as scammers are able to use your number or any number for that matter in their caller ID. I would advise people to verify that it is the IRS asking them to verify the amount of my last tax refund or amount due. It would be safe to say Scammers don't have THAT info

Said she was calling from IRS and she could come to my home or I could meet her in Buffalo NY. She called from a WV cell phone and tried telling me she’d explain the number when we met. [***] scammers!!

Received a call from this number about 10 min ago (304)350-1898. I called the number back, and ATT recorded voice comes on and says “this number is not a working number. Please check the number and try again. Goodbye”

Pretty sure if this number was truly the “IRS” (who does not correspond via the phone anyway!) that the “IRS” would have a working, reachable phone number. 🙄

You can fake caller ID numbers.  I use a collection agency for delinquent accounts and they told me they can fake the number for anyone. Apparently it is legal. I got a call from this number too saying they were IRS.  I don't believe it's real.

The same thing happened to me when I dialed the wrong number.  She called 3 times without saying anything only the 3rd call is when she identified herself as someone from the IRS.

They called my phone twice and I did not answer. They left no message. I called the number from a different phone and they said " you have reached the Internal Revenue Service and if you trying to reach the IRS to refer to the number on your correspondence.Yes, this sounds like a scam. The IRS will never contact you by phone.#Period.

This is an IRS number. It is a spoofed number that the IRS uses for outgoing calls from various offices. My call was from HR for information on a background clearance, and I don't doubt it is also used by the Taxpayer Advocate, which is a branch of the IRS.

But it is spoofed by scammers, too, for obvious reasons - if you call back, you'll get the IRS. So do not answer unless you know you should be expecting a call from the IRS, and even then, do not give out any sensitive information over the phone or give them any financial details.

Or just let it go to voicemail. The IRS knows that people don't like answering their calls, they will let you know who they are in voicemail.

Based on discussions above, the call "may" emanate from the IRS, as I am dealing with a rogue (yes, rogue) agent from Long Is. Am working with a local tax payer advocate, No messages left, as I have continually asked for every communication to be in writing.

A advocate called me and asked for my address and bday and last four. She claims I'm under review and need to file a amended RETURN and send it by mail to a address in Kansas, mo. What's crazy is I just had a face to face appointment with irs last week and they never mentioned this. The lady who called was Maria lozada she told me to have my tax preparer call her if any questions  it just doesn't sit well that she didn't recite that long a** i.d number like any other irs official does

This was a call from a tax payer advocate. I've been working with one. She left a message and I called her back on the number I knew. I asked about the number and the advocate  stated it was a number the IRS uses.
