i haven't had a phone call, but similar email exchange w/mary (and paul) scott posting ad for apt. in berkeley, ca in early august.  the western union money w/o seeing apt. first got too sketchy.  i'm so sorry for the folks who've paid in.  i really understand wanting to trust him/her and being hopeful about a good deed and deal.  
since they're posting all over the country, can some anti-fraud agency bust 'em via this IP address?

The apartment is available for long term or short term depending on how your stay will be and the building is in a great location situated in the quiet and safe area and offers secure access. internet, cable, laundry in-suite, storage facilities, heat, water, electric and parking are included in the rent and pets are allowed in the apartment..I hope you understand that you will not be able to view the inside of the apartment in person for now because I have just relocated and I have the keys here with me.

I tried to look for an agent that I could give the document & the keys before I left but could not find any as a matter of urgency. And I don't want my home misused in my absence that is why I took the keys and documents along with me. So I hope you will promise me to take very good care of the apartment always.

I replied and sent a letter to his "wife" Mary Scott. When things started sounding fishy, I checked the address. The apartments don't go for that low a cost. I left a message with the phone number that showed for the proper listing online. Haven't heard back on that yet.

After the series of emails which included a renter application (no real personal info requested other than phone and address), a list of all the great things about the apartment, a story about "Mary's" being unwell and in Oregon while the Rev is doing God's good work in the UK. Thus, neither can show me the apartment. BUT if I wire them money (a $400 deposit) then they'll send me the keys and paperwork via DHL.

Anyway, I am reporting it to craigslist, where I first saw the post and am sending all the emails to the FCC fraud department, including the hidden info they'll need to track 'em.  

Utterly amazed at how much trouble people will go to in creating harm for others.

I haven't and obviously won't wire these folks a dime, but I do encourage ANYONE renting or seeking housing to be very careful when doing any business online.

RED FLAG ALERT: If there is no one who can meet you and show you the apartment or house.
Ditto for people being out of town, sick and oh, please pay up front sight unseen, etc.

WATCH OUT!  Be careful and do NOT fall for this kind of thing. Many of us are smart people but sometimes things appear honest, decent and real - when they aren't.  If you're sharp it won't take long to figure things out.  I'm just worried about gullible people who don't know any better. wow.. luckly i read this thread and not believing their email. so disgusting they bring up God's Name, i hope one day God will punish them real bad.. they even sent me pict of their appt. which is i know that is not theirs. the pict look different than the pict that they put in the add. i saw their add of 140 Simcoe Street-Toronto-ON. the appt seem so good to be true, only $500/month in that location. unbelievable !!

I got a response from these scam artists as well.  The names used were Rev. Paul Scott and his wife Mary Rams.  The story is basically the same - he's on a crusade/doing God's work in the UK with Winners Chapel Churchand she's injured in Fairview Oregon.  Why she can't be injured in the UK with him is beyond my comprehension.  The contact number I was given was a uk# 447024044187 and the email addresses used were paulscottrev72@yahoo.com and mary_rams@yahoo.com.  

This time the scam was for an apartment in Toronto - a downtown condo they were supposedly renting for $500 with all utilities, internet and cable included. A rental that's much too good to be true.  

Beware guys - and thanks to the other people who spoke up about this because you saved me $500!

I got the same thing as everyone else reported on here and they are right! It is a total scam, you WILL NOT get what you THINK you are paying for and you will be out a lot of money. Always meet face to face with someone to do your transactions!
