This is the Social Security Administration. Its from their complex in Woodlawn, MD.
They can't do anything with the last 4#'s of your SSN, they use that to find out who called you so they can transfer you to the correct person. Definitely not a scam. This really is the Social Security Admin.
My husband works for them and he calls me from this and a few of the other numbers in that building.

I have been getting calls from this number for months. They come at all times, including 4:00 AM. If I pick up or it rolls to voicemail I just hear a series of beeps like a fax machine. It is very annoying.

Calls mostly in the middle of the night- dead silence on the line. Have called national and local ss offices and have not received a solution yet. They had me track the calls and times and they searched their system but found no outgoing calls to my number at those times. Have also spoke with phone company and their only advice is to pay $5 a month and block the number. I did this for a while and it DID stop the calls. I have since moved to a new city with a new number and did not put a forwarding number on my old line. The calls have started again...

This really is the Social Security Administration. On the caller ID it comes up US Govt. My boyfriend's mother works there, and she calls here all the time from that number.

I am self employed. I wonder if they were calling to gather information on self employed persons to see if we are paying into social security? I know I am, I just sent the I.R.S. a check.

I got a call this morning at 11:37 am on Saturday morning 11/07/09 from a adult female claiming she was calling from SSA office. She specifically gave my roommates name asking to. When I asked her for her name and number to have the call return to her by my roommate, she was reluctant.  I told her I wanted her number because I wanted to call her phone number because I knew she was not calling from the SSA office because the SSA office is never open on Saturday's. She ended the call bysaying I will call back.

I called this number back after haning up and got a recording message as if it was the SSA office.  I believe the people that are doing this have taken this recording and programmed it to be used for their own games as a way of making people believe that the call is not a scam.

These calls are a SCAM.  BE ALERT, NEVER GIVE ANY INFORMATION OVER THE TELEPHONE to anyone.  If its the SSA office, They would have your information already on file and they would NOT be asking you this information.  Any one receiving these types of calls, reported to the SSA office in your county.  Be sure to try to get the phone number where the caller is calling from, time and date.  AGAIN, NEVER GIVE ANY INFORMATION BY PHONE.

ps.   I forgot to mention that this is the phone number that the female's call came from on Saturday 11/07/09.  The phone number is 1-410-965-1234.    p.s. don't be surprise if they also come in with a different phone number.   p.s. I live in the state of Florida.  This phone number is not from out state.  That alone raised a flag for me.

Be alert, be cautious and NEVER give out any personal information by phone.

This phone number 1-410-965-1234 although it saids the your calling the SSA office, THERE OFFICE IS closed on Saturday's.  Please be alert. The SSA Office is ONLY open during the week and NOT on weekends.

Perhaps the person who is part of the scam placed an ad on this site stating that the calls are from the SSA office for the glory of them having people believe its a real call from the SSA office.

IF IT WAS, they would NOT have any reservations in providing anyone with a phone number and their direct extension where one could return their phone call to verify where the call is coming from.  DON'T fall for THESE types of SCAMS.

    BE ALERT AND WISE!

I suspect that this is a got contractor hired by SSA. My spouse filed a reconsideration for special assit with Part D medicare. And got a letter from a person who listed a job title that doesn't exist at SSA. ID ring say US govt dept that's not an official designatiton. This person was not given access to the entire file or computer records so for a contractor to determine elegibiity for a Federal program administered by ssa, is unconstitutional and a sham. Govt contractors are notorious for saying they are Federal employees/ which is a federal crime to impersonate one. read my story at washingtonpost.com. Using Bing search engine query "Linda Joy Adams" @ click on washingtonpost.com for comments. We are all being put under'death panels soon not just Federal employees.Linda Joy Adams

IT is true that 410-966-1234 is the main switchboard number to the SSA Baltimore headquarters.  However, if you have one of those systems that allows callers to enter the number they are calling from, anyone could enter that number and pretend to be from SSA.  Do not provide an SSN to a person who calls you from this number.  If you call this number back, you probably will not get anyone since it doesn't go to a specific person.  Wait to be recontacted....If it is truly SSA, they will get in touch with you again or try another way.

said SS was open 7 days a week and said my insurance wrote them and said  to put me on part D, and asked if I wanted it.I asked what my companys name was and they could not say. When I said I was going to call my insurance and Local SS they hung up. Watch out for this kind of scam

410-965-1234 is indeed SSA from the Woodlawn headquarters.  As for "the office is closed on Saturdays" that may be true of the field offices, but not of all the offices in the Woodlawn headquarters complex.  Why would they be calling you, I'm not sure.

I used to get calls from this number when my dad worked there.  It has been years since he retired so I didn't remember the number, but knew it looked very familiar, so I checked here when I just got a call.  While reading the site, I got a voicemail- from someone I know who works there.

So, I don't know why you are getting calls from the Social Security Administration, but if you are getting calls from this number, they are from SSA.

This number is from Social Security Administration, which is located in Woodlawn, Md.  This is the processing center that handles disability payments.  They will never ask for you entire SSN, but will ask for the last four to confirm you are the person but they give out sensitive information.  No one can do anything with the last four of your SSN!  There are 48 departments in the Woodlawn facility and they are divided by the first 5 digits of your SSN.  This building is open seven days a week, so it is possible that someone could call you on a Saturday or Sunday.

I am an attorney in Michigan and I handle SSI and SSD cases. I got a call from (410) 965-1234 at 7:30 am. The woman who called left a message and stated she wanted my appointment of representative I'm the last case I handeled. She correctly named my client in that case and said she was processing the claim. Although this particular call was valid, if I was in the situation, I still would not give my SS# over the phone for fear that it is a scammer that changes their caller id...this happens all the time and is very easy to do.

It may be a scam, BUT SSA employees do have so much work to do and so little time to get it done, we are allowed to work overtime on Saturdays to keep up with the increasing workload.

Got two calls from this number before 9:00 am this morning (Saturday).  They left a hang up message on my voice mail on the the first call and then called back immediately a second time.  I do not answer numbers that I do not recognize.  I called back and got a recording that it was the Social Security office and that they were closed.  I agree that some of these calls may actually be from the Social Security office, but others are probably scams by someone that has spoofed their number so that it appears on the caller ID that the call is coming from the SSA.  If you do a reverse number search on whitepages.com, it says the number belongs to T Wetherald, 66 E Main St Waynesboro, PA 17268-1634 it lists this persons job as SSA and IT (that's the part that's interesting) with this additional information:
