Definitely not Social Security. No one at SSA can look up your info with the first 5 digits of your ssn- that’s ridiculous. This is a scam, don’t provide any info to these people! Sept 2020 and calls are still going out from this number. SCAM.

I sent for my disability records to SSA and FOIA request.  I have call block and did not get a ring but saw the number.  Before I called back I online checked and got to a page that identifies (410) 965-1234 as SSA in Maryland.  I called, touched 1 for referral to a department gave my first five ssn #  and left a message with the persons Call Answering.   Just to be safe I am registering a complaint with FCC

The Social Security office will not ask you for your social security number on the phone they have told me this previously. And you can inform them to send you your information at your mailing address which they have on file

They can do alot with the last 4 of your social. Last 4 grants access to many things... Next time your at the bank tell them you can't remember your bank account #. Try it with your insurance be it health or house, renters, car ect. You'll find the last of your social should be kept in your head and your card left at home.
BTW, tell me you have no experience with the military, without telling me you have no experience with the military.
Just saw this is from 2008. So, I'm more less leaving this for the next person.

What does the military have to do with that post from 14 years ago?

Most likely because the person they replied to had "Caller: US GOVT", so anyone who has ever been in the military would know that the last 4 digits of your SSN can open doors.

Just think about how many times you inquired about something and they asked "what is the last 4 of your SSN?"  and it was enough to verify you as the right person.

I've never inquired about something & been asked for any of my SSN.
