... beware of giving anyone the last 4 digits of your ssn ...
The last 4 digits of one's Social Security Number (SSN) is the most useless part of the number.  And knowing it certainly cannot tell anyone "all your information".

The SSN is comprised of three parts:
    1) The Area Number (the first three digits) – Up until 1972 this represented the State in which the number was issued.  From 1972 it has represented the State in which the applicant resided when they applied for their number (based on the mailing address on their application form).  In the late 1980's almost all SSNs started being issued at birth and the number can tell where someone was born.

    2) The Group Number (next two digits) – This can tell approximately when an SSN was issued.  Group Numbers represent blocks of 10,000 SSNs within a given Area and range from 01 to 99 (00 is not used).  They are not issued in sequence, but rather in the order of odd groups 01 to 09, then even groups 10 to 98, then even groups 02 to 08 and lastly odd groups 11 to 99.

    3) The Serial Number (the last four digits) – These are issued in numerical order from 0001 to 9999 (number 0000 is never used) within a Group.  The only information you can get from a given Serial Number is which Serial Number was issued before it and which was issued after it.

The three parts together create a 9-digit number that uniquely identifies the person to whom it was issued to the Social Security Administration.  SSNs are never reused.  Nearly 1 billion Americans can be identified with an SSN, to date less than half that number of Americans have been issued an SSN.
