- NixDude replies to KennethAmericaYea, I called also. They said some of their call centers do not say Census Bureau, instead they said the id of the call center and that 520-798-4152 is a valid number
Then they went on to verify that LSA2 DOC BOC 99 was valid, and that
LSA2 stands for the call center itself (forgot what he said it stood for).
DOC stands for Department of Commerce
and BOC is Bureau of Census
Makes sense once they explain it.
Also they ask for your birth dates just to get your age, do like I did and say if you are born on December 12, 1980, tell them December 1, 1980...they just need it for the age, that is all. In fact I do that on everything except something that really needs my real birth date. - Its real Dude replies to Markhttp://www.census.gov/npc/interviewer.html
That number is listed there...clearly
Now answer their questions, you are breakin the law! - Natalie replies to Liz WolfActually, if you go on the census bureau website this is listed as a legitimate number.

- Lyn| 1 replyThey have called 3 days in a row. They give a different 800 number to call back to and a case number for you to refer to. It sounds very official until they say that they are open 7 days a week. What government office is open 7 days a week??? Just to be sure, I called the US Census bureau. The person I spoke with said that they will sometimes call people if they are doing a special survey-and there is a list of them. He asked me for the street number on my house (not my street name) and my zip code. That was all he needed. I am not on any list for any special survey
I told him that the caller said they were open 7 days a week and he laughed and said the call was definitely NOT the US Census Bureau. They, like most government offices, are only open Mon- Fri. So this is a SCAM folks and don't give them so much as the time of day.- Caller: US Census Bureau HA Ha Ha
- Mia replies to mr DEEI answered a call about a wk. ago, and they were calling because the info they had sent in the mail hadn't been filled out and sent in, yet. Could do over the phone for about 30 min. or send in the paperwork. I said I would send it in! Haven't done it yet, so getting calls again!
- lileno| 4 repliesit is legit. the number is listed as one of the dist centers on the government census website. If your concerned about numbers being spoofed, ask to call them back. It takes about 10 minutes to answer their questions. the government uses the data for a number of reasons.
- Caller: U.S Census
- Call type: Survey
- BigA replies to lileno"it is legit. the number is listed as one of the dist centers on the government census website" Considering that the census bureau deals in numbers and figure, why would the need a "dist center"? I am assuming dist is an abbreviation for distributing or distribution? Also, the Arizona office is located in Denver, Colorado since they don't have offices in every state. It has a 720 Area code. "ask to call them back." So what you ask them for a number and then call it back? What does that prove? The even bigger question is if you allegedly know everything there is about this number, why did you look it up? What more could you possibly learn about it?
- MidNYteStorm replies to lilenoIf I were to get a call from the US Census, I can promise you that I will be blocking the number.
- Resident47 replies to lilenoI have the same squinty eyes as BigA on your comment. If I doubt what a cold caller tells me, I'm not inclined to blindly use a phone number provided by the same person under suspicion. To vet a Bureau employee, it's reliable to contact one of its six Regional Offices or one of its three National Processing Centers. A true Bureau employee can name an immediate supervisor, who is also on the record.

http://www.census.gov/npc/contactus.html - Resident47 replies to CarlIt's just this sort of paranoiac refusal to cooperate which drives up the cost of enumeration, ruins data required by Congress to execute laws, and cheats your town and state of services and changes which may be needed badly.
The angry refusals all came from people who listened to very slanted objections promoted by certain dangerous political figures I won't mention here. Federal law in fact does not limit the scope of the census to a head count. Congress has the power to expand that scope, and has done so from the very start in 1790. The first decennial census had multiple questions, not just one, and it was already classifying Americans by age, gender, and citizenship status.
Did a radical Revolutionary era focus group or covert British saboteur shoehorn in that provision? No, this was spearheaded by someone who was mentioned in that history class you slept through, lead architect of the US Census and paid-full club member of the Founding Fathers, James Madison. In his words the Census was to be "extended so as to embrace some other objects besides the bare enumeration of the inhabitants ...." so to facilitate Congress to "make proper provision for the agricultural, commercial, and manufacturing interests ... in due proportion."
In modern terms, the Fathers you think you know so well had the foresight to use the census as a tool for regional long range planning. This saves money and time on a second survey and also means that business and government don't have to make wasteful guesses on every broad decision, which you fist-beating types would be certain to protest yet more loudly. - Me, Not You. replies to MeI get calls from them too. I completed the mailed survey and sent it back and that's when they started calling. They said it's to make sure the questions asked were understood so in the next survey, 4 years from now, they would be more accurate. She then proceeded to ask the same questions that were on the survey. I told her I wasn't going to answer as I had already completed the form and they had the information. Period. Not to call me. Well, guess what, they still call.
