- Kim| 1 replyPhone call was left from that phone number and the accent was so strong it was difficult to understand - when I called the number back he answered he was with the IRS- the number was left on my mother in laws phone so I knew it could not be correct asking for me. Tried to tell me now it was my mother in law he was calling on and she owed back taxes from 2005-2012. I told him that was interesting she doesn't own a home - hasn't for 10 years and asked him who he was trying to call give me a actual name and he hung up. I tried to call back 3 times and they won't answer the phone.

- Alfalfa replies to KimWASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.
Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.
“This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country. We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves. Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,” says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. “If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don’t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn’t the IRS calling.” Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim’s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it’s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver’s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here’s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue – if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you’ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you’ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their “FTC Complaint Assistant” at FTC.gov. Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information. This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.
More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.
http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/IRS-Warns-of-Pervasive-Telephone-Scam - EricReceived the first call, as above, stating the guy (with a thick Indian accent) was from the IRS. He used my non-legal name (my middle name and part of my last), indicating that he must have gotten my information from an unofficial source. He said there was a problem with my last return and asked if I knew about it. I laughed and asked him if he thought I was stupid, and I hung up. He then called BACK! Yelled at me and said he WAS from the IRS and that I will be handed over to "the Courts" or something, and then hung up. LOL!

- maryI just received a call from this number. The man with the heavy accident said his name was Steve Bryant. He left a message saying he was from the IRS region 8. He said to not disregard the call and to call back immediately before legal action is taken against me. I know I do not have any issues with the IRS so I knew it was a scam but more importantly the IRS is serious about getting money owed and would not rely on some hack who is barely understandable to leave a confidential message on an answering machine, and threatening legal action. They would send a letter as any legal entity does. Every part of this is a bad scam. I hope no one falls for this. I hope someone reports whoever is doing this. As for me, this comment is as much attention as I am giving the ppl who cannot get a legitimate job and just try to take advantage of ppl who legitimately earn money.

I am so grateful to have read the previous blog about tel# 530-238-5813. I received the same kind of call from a man with a heavy accent claiming to be from the IRS Division of investigation. Extremely hard to understand his accent. Could not get his name.

- Knew it was a scam from the startThey called me this morning and a woman who was nearly impossible to understand said I needed to call that number 530-238-5813. Funny since she was already calling from that number. She told me her name was Aleera Walker. I did call back and Johnson answered the phone but it took several attempts to get through, A couple of times, the phone beeped once and and the call dropped.
I worked it until they realized I was asking more questions than they were and they then hung up on me. - Nickey BI received the same call today from Mike Rogers. I called back to someone who said their name was John Anderson. He said that there were three charges against me. I informed him that I never received a letter. He said that was not their problem and they called before. I asked for a date which he was unable to provide. He also said he was going to suspend my drivers license. I told him that IRS usually sends letters as certified mail. He said the only pap work I will receive is in court. Come Monday, this will be reported to my local office and tax preparer. Whoever this is needs to be fired and placed underneath the jail or deported.

- Bunny R.I received the same calls from Kevin P. and Senoir Officer James Parker. I was told that I needed to pay 18, 945.75 today or I would have bank & property seized and could go to jail. We I asked why they were only asking for half of what we really owed they said that I was getting some kind of deal (they are very hard to understand) when asked if he could double check that amount that I really wanted to be sure that I got everything paid in full he was not able to give me an exact amount but was repeating to me that he was giving me examples. I asked why if he was with IRS he was not looking at my account and giving me exact figures. I then asked him to make sure that he had the total amount of mine and my husbands (who's name I gave as Richard...this is not husbands name) and he stated several times that yes he had both mine and Richards totals. I then told him that I wasn't married to Richard and he said that he knew that and that he was playing the same game that I was and that I needed to stop playing the game or else ... I told him that I had filed a report with local law, Better Business and tomorrow I will call the IRS...since HELLO you stupid forign f******* .... the IRS is CLOSED today. Get a clue on US Holidays if you are going to pretened to be US agency....

- N. CarolinaI was woke up this morning by a call, at 6:52 am, from a women with a heavy Indian accent. She was calling from this same number, 530-238-5813. I couldn't understand what she said her name was. But, she said she was calling from the IRS and she was asking for my deceased mother (whom the IRS knows is deceased). After asking her a bunch o questions, I advised her that I knew she was full of [***] and if she ever called my number again; I would personally hunt her and whoever she was working with, down. I plan to do whatever I can to shut them down!

- Caller: IRS supposedly
- jkI too am getting calls, haven't returned any because of the heavy accent, but I did report it to the FTC. Why hasn't it stopped if all these people are getting calls and some of us reporting it, seems like a really bad thing to say you are with the IRS if you are not. I just don't understand why this is continuing to happen.
- Caller: IRS??

- AnonymousFirst Red Flag: He called at 8:50 am on a Saturday. Second Red Flag: He asked only for me and said that only I owed taxes, even though my husband and I file jointly, he was speaking with my husband and he never asked for my husband by name. Third Red Flag: He got very upset and said we were "stupid" before he hung up.

- Chris DHad the same nonsense today. My wife called me at work so upset. FTC call is a good idea as well as reporting to IRS. Shame that these people will stoop so low. What a vile thing to do. I am sure that there are many unsuspecting older and less questioning people when it comes to taxes. It really pulls at peoples fears. The dead give away is the 530 California area code along with the Heavy accents. I would NOT call back the number as it may create charges on your bill. Not sure if that has happened to anyone...but am thinking that may be their angle.
