They are not "scammers" in the strict sense... they are third-party "aftermarket" collectors. Capital One closed your account and WROTE IT OFF. At that point it went to your credit report. Damage done. Client Services buys the collection rights to this written off debt for perhaps 2-3 cents on the dollar. They have no legal power to collect the debt... although they are well within the law to collect the money from you IF you are willing to pay it, but they cannot sue you over the debt and they cannot use any involuntary methods to collect it (wage garnish, court order, etc...). It will not come off of your credit report if you pay it, although you can petition the reporting services to "update" your report to show that the debt was paid eventually. The write off will remain on your account however.

"  Yes, this is called assignment.  It is written into every contract for credit cards, loans, mortgages, etc.  "They have no legal power to collect the debt."  Sorry to tell you this but yes the do as the Assignee. "but they cannot sue you over the debt"  Wrong again as many people have found out.  They can and will used "involuntary" means to collect it if it is legal and if they have won a judgement in court.  Telling people that they can ignore a court order is extremely foolish and irresponsible and can get people into a whole lot of trouble..  Stop listening to legal advice from your drunken barroom buddies.

This person is trying to tell me I owe a debt that I’ve never owed

This number is a collection agency that buys old past due accounts that were written off and are trying to get some money. Legal in a way, but cannot affect your credit history if it was dropped.

It is very legal, not legal in a way.  It can affect your credit report if it is in the 7 year reporting time period (7 years from the date of last activity).

This number has called three times in three days, no messages, no nothing. I'm blocking them. if they have business with me, they can write me a letter. I strongly suspect this is a scam.

Sounds like the  number they're calling from and what's on your caller id is no the same.  Ever get a call from a scammer and your own number is on the caller id? Caller id is getting spoofed.

Every day for the past few days this number has called me. Never leaves a message. If it is Capital One as I read in one of the comments. I don't have a card , I never have, and I'm not looking to get one at any time soon. Wish they would stop calling as I will never answer an unknown number to me.

I have no idea who or what these people want. I have no overdue bills.

Caller ID showed CLIENT SVCS INC

This person is calling me at least 4 times a day on my land line and now on my cell phone another  4 or 5 times/day

I have a google number they called 40 times over a period of 3 months. I was not even aware of their efforts until I checked my spam folder one day.

Called my mother, and confused her.  I took over.  They may have pulled the Can You Hear Me stunt; I was upset.  They asked for a sibling that has not lived here for years.  I said, They aten’t available and is there something I can help you with?  They asked if this was a good number for said sibling.  I said No.  She said, Bye.

I have received calls from bill collectors in the past, trying to intimidate me about a supposed bill my son owed, but his employer was supposed to cover.  They had no problem telling me who they were and what they wanted.  That these clowns would not makes me suspicious.  They have called, using multiple numbers in the past, and never left messages, so they were blocked.  This one will receive the same treatment.

Telling you about the debt is illegal.  What you need to know has been posted on page 2.  Read it and use it or don't.  Your choice.
