Here is a good one for you that tells you they will get through anyway they can.  Just yesterday I had my phone number changed mainly due to the numerous annoying calls that I would receive on a daily basis.  I was totally fed up with this type of business practice. I had to pay a few to have it changed and I will be paying an additional fee to have it be an unpublished number.  Well, at 10:04 this morning my phone rang for the first time since the number change, and low and behold it was a call from these [***]...unbelieveable....is there nothing that can stop these type of companies from screwing up any quiet time you may have on a weekly basis....totally unacceptable business practices, how can these people sleep at night?

Same thing here. "Final notice" without a first notice. Lower my interest rate on credit cards... Blah blah blah. It said press 1 now to talk to a rep. I did. Dead air. I wanted to at least listen to them squirm a bit when I asked the name of their company? No such satisfaction.

What we really need is a freeze button on our phones to lock the caller's line when they call in, shutting them down for a day.

Unfortunately you unnecessarily changed your phone number. The card service scammers use a robodialer, which dials numbers in a sequential order. All numbers will come to the top of their list eventually.

Changing your number to avoid scam callers was a waste of time and money. Paying for it to be unpublished is also not going to help.

The reason is the scam callers do not call YOU - they call the NUMBER.

They use an auto-dialer that simply dials EVERY number in a range the scammer specifies and if the number you just paid to change to and pay extra to be unpublished is in that range then you will get a call.

The most effective way I found to reduce the number of calls I get is to simply never answer them or to answer but immediately turn the phone off after answering. Since I started doing this the number of calls I get like this have dropped 95%.

The reason this may help is that when a person answers all the scam calls every time, the scammer may be just looking for ACTIVE numbers, those where someone answers. Then they take the list of active numbers they have accumulated and sell them to other scammers as validated active numbers. The can make a lot of money this way and never actually talk to anyone.

The only calls I answer now are the ones where I know the number or recognize the name of the person or company.
If it is a legit call, the caller SHOULD leave a message, if they never leave a message why are they calling.
If it is an 800 number then it's probably a collection agency or a legit company - 800 numbers cost them each time they use them to call and each time someone calls it. Scammers won't use actual toll-free numbers because of those charges.
Also, every call I never answered or missed I look up on the net - most are listed as this one is and I never worry aout them.
If the number is for a legit company then it should come up for them. If it isn't listed it may be someone's cell number.

I'm not sure they DO just autodial 'strings of numbers' all the time.  All our cell phones (5 in this family) are UNPUBLISHED and RARELY get calls.  Our home landline, however, we've had for 35 years and has been in every phone book, given to every business, doctor's office, etc.  That gets the vast majority of calls.

That being said, I had a problem with cable last week and called the company's (TW) 800 service line.  They were 'experiencing  high volume of calls' due to a major outage and I automatically got transferred to a MEXICO call center.  There the 'operator' proceeded to ask me 'identifying' questions, including my NAME, PHONE number, acct number, ADDRESS and then SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER.  I finally BALKED at giving the SS# saying she had ENOUGH info to know it was me.  She 'put me on hold' and then I got cut off!  I ended up calling a LOCAL number instead and got my complaint registered.  BUT, after that one call, the SPAM started going WILD on our home phone this weekend - and this morning I got THIS call.  So, I think the FOREIGN CALL CENTERS - even those HIRED by 'legit' American Corporations - USE THIS INFO to SPAM us going forward!

    Mad as Hell
Every day I get these calls. No way to speak to a human to get it to stop. I thought Congress passed a law that scammers like these are not allowed to use public phone lines to conduct their scams.

I'm not sure about the autodial strings of numbers either.  I have three cell phones on my Verizon account and we very RARELY get scam calls.  My mom's cell phone is with AT&T and she gets scam calls weekly.  We get robo scam calls every day, sometimes 5 or more, on our landline phone.  Go figure.  We have also gotten calls from other Bank Card Srvcs numbers:  616-613-2227 and 616-613-2228 (so far)......

It has nothing to do with congress.  Real companies generally abide by the rules set in place by DNC.  Scammers trying to steal your information do not.  Nor is there a particularly easy way to hunt them down if they're using fake numbers created through an internet program.  Just stop answering these calls and they go away for a while.  But get your head on straight and stop blaming things because you have no clue how stuff works.  Obviously you throw around words like Taliban and don't actually understand them.  Try reading some stuff before shooting your mouth off and sounding ridiculous.  Also, you should check out how to report a call to the DNC, much like the rules of a store trying to catch a shoplifter there's a number of steps that must be taken before you can start saying they aren't doing their job.

Don't kid yourself. They are calling from overseas using a local US front number. Nothing can be done other than blocking the number that called you.  They will call you from another one but you can cut these calls perhaps by 75-80%
