- MarionHad a missed call from them yesterday. No message. Got a call again today and answered it. They were calling me about a debt for over $1700 accumulated between 2008 and 2010 on a Capital One credit card. The name was not mine but the last 4 social numbers were the same as mine. I've never had or even considered applying for a Captial One credit card. I've had the same cell phone number for 11 years. I told them the debt was not mine and she hung up on me. Called back and I tried to get some information as to how they got my number and she completely ignored my question and asked for my social instead. Obviously I wasn't comfortable giving it to them so with nothing but my first name she said I wasn't the person they were looking for and again I was hung up on. Does anyone know how they get their information? Looks like I have a bit of credit report checking to do.
- Friend replies to AkafyPortfolio Recovery is obviously in dire straits. It appears they are doing anything they can to rake up a penny or two. In the past, I have had these types of collection agencies bother me about debts that were completely made up. I am not exaggerating: some of these agencies apparently get a (very old) customer list from a big-name company and then INVENT a debt, which they then try to convince people is owed to them. I turned in some of these scammers to the Texas State Attorney General. Come to think of it, I haven't heard anything more from the scammers in quite awhile. Don't Mess With Texas! lol!
This is the only thing I can think of in your case. They're making up something. After reading some of the other posts for this phone number, it seems that Portfolio Recovery is using bad information to pester innocent people. I know that at 23 years old, you probably have other things to worry about, but if you would like to save the world (and who wouldn't), please make a complaint to your State Attorney General and also to the Federal Trade Commission. Just go online and look for the complaint form. All agencies have online complaint forms. Fill it out accurately, submit it, and then don't worry anymore about it. The government agencies (for once!) are all on our side this time around. They really DO cut these pests off at the knees. - Friend replies to AkafyOne more thing! Be sure to check your credit report. Maybe somebody has used your personal information to steal from you and it is showing up as a debt in your name. You can get free yearly credit reports that should reveal this to you. Get them only from this place: annualcreditreport.com, because it is overseen by the Federal Trade Commission. and is really, truly free.
- BrittoThis caller is Portfolio Recovery. I got a very nice young woman who wanted to know if it was okay to ask me for some information. I said, "Nope. It isn't okay. Thanks for calling." and hung up. I appreciate that Portfolio Recovery appears to be following the rules now: there is a real person on the other end who tells me her name and the company she represents. She was even kind enough to wait until a half hour after lunchtime to call. However, I wrangled with these collection agencies eleven years ago, won my lawsuits, and put it all behind me. Except for desperate, slow-learning, little Portfolio Recovery. Maybe they have fines to pay or something? Is that why they're bothering people about eleven-year old debts that they did not have the balls to sue for a decade ago? I wonder why they didn't? But, eleven years later, they start making phone calls? I am laughing! This is ludicrous! I almost feel sorry for them.

- cj replies to BethHope you turned them in that is illegal what they are doing. People need to turn them in. I read up on requirements here where I live they have certain times of the day they can call, required to leave a message if a collection agency. Can not harass people or make threats.
- AnnPortfolio Recovery-the bottom feeders of Collection Agencies.
They keep sending me letters (and I am assuming the call I received today on my cell was for the same thing) about a debt I paid off in 1995. I keep all the paperwork for it, but it got sold off to a couple of different companies. I would go through the whole process of having them verify the debt, then I would send them a copy of the paid in full paperwork. The company would then close it and sell it off to another company. Until Portfolio got a hold of it. I went through this process once with them. They still have the debt-that was paid off-so I just throw their letters in the trash and ignore their calls.
If you are getting calls from them on your cell phone, block them.- Caller: Portfolio Recovery

- StinaThese people call at 8:30-9:00 at night. I usually miss the call because I'm getting my daughter to bed. They never leave a message and I've never received anything from portfolio recovery. Annoying!
- Peaches replies to Richard K RaniumLMFAO best response I've seen yet!
- Peaches and screamThis number calls and does not leave a message. I assumed was a telemarketer; have had tons of those calls lately even though I am on the Do Not Call list. Enjoyed some of the more humorous posts here. Thanks for the laughs and information. Will be blocking this number.

- JimPicked up the phone. Yep, it was those losers. But they were looking for somebody that I didn't know. Guess it pays to have better records.

- LBKeep in mind that sometimes these people search for names and numbers to use as leads by casting a wide net. My wife had been getting calls from them, asking for me, and when I talked to them, it turns out they were looking for someone with a similar name, spelled slightly differently, and with a different last 4 digits of SSN than mine.

- nobodyCollections Portfolio company that is attempting to collect on already paid or forgiven debts.
It is noted by the telecommunications company that it is a landline, however it is actually a disposable cell number (TracPhone kinda thing).
I have already filed a complaint with the BBB.
This company purchased a debt from 20 years ago that had been paid off 19 years past.- Caller: Portfolio Recovery Associates

- **Just dont answer. Companies like this buy the rights to your case cheap after the 7 year mark. The only way they can get money from you is from bullying. If you never answer or make contact they have got nothing. If they ever did leave a message with any personal information they would be in violation with the collection code.
