Thanks 800 notes. I love this site! I don't have to answer these crappy calls and I appreciate everyone's assistance in helping us understand who they are from. Thanks to everyone who posted this valuable information. My mom has Alzheimer's and she ends up in the emergency room about once a month. I'm sure there's a late bill here somewhere. There always is. They do get paid eventually. But sitting down and working it out is not necessarily a top priority. I am surprised that they often are calling in less than three or four weeks after services were rendered. The docs in the ER are amazing and I'm glad they don't have to take time to call us personally just to get paid for their help.  The calls are from the company they contract with.

http://www.cep.com/   They are a legitimate company.  The 800 number is usually their auto-dialer or billing staff calling to discuss your emergency room doctor bill.  I get a bill from them when I go to the ER.

I get a bill from CEP/California Emergency Physicians/MedAmerica Billing every time I go to the ER.  This is their phone number.  Emergency room visits are divided up by what services you use.  You get a bill from the hospital itself. The doctor that saw you (they contract with CEP/California Emergency Physicians/MedAmerica Billing.)  Then whatever else you got, like I got a bill for my MRI as well that was separate from the hospital and doctor, but still from my emergency room visit.  The people at this number are very helpful and businesslike.  Usually if they're calling me, the hospital didn't forward my insurance information or address and they need it.  Not a big deal.

This number is for California Emergency Physicians.  It is a legitimate number to a legitimate business.  These days with HIPAA laws billing companies are not allowed to leave detailed messages nor are they allowed to leave messages regarding the care of other people.  If someone is giving out information regarding another person they generally are not legit.  CEP started in Modesto CA and currently bills for hospitals in TX, KY, AZ, GA and several other states.

This is a call about an er visit. You can receive up to 5 separate bills for one er visit. You get one from the hospital and they charge for use of the facility, materials used and the nursing staff. You also get one from CEP and they do the billing for the dr's services that day. Many people do not know the er physicians name. They also have to be vague because of the hipaa rules and regulations. The info they have is provided by the hospital and is on the medical records for that day. Call the er you were treated at to verify the company is legit.

They left a message on vm "this is a message for [my name].This is Alex. Please call me back at 1-800-498-7157".

Legit or not, this kind of message insures that I
WILL NOT return their call. I know nobody at
that number and have no information from them -- f*** them!

Red FINAL NOTICE sent to a vulnerable client who I work with in UK.  Had visited California recently and paid out a large amount of money for medical care whilst there.  This company demanding $250 which I have advised her not to pay as she paid for everything whilst on holiday.  She had sent a cheque, which fortunately has not been cashed so have advised her to cancel cheque.  I phoned the number and there was laughter when the phone picked up then cut off twice and they spoke Spanish.  This will not be paid.

California Emergency Physicians.  They are the billing/collections company for several hospitals/doctors in the Central Valley.  I have legitimate medical bills from them.  They don't leave me any messages.

This is a legitimate company.  HOWEVER, their billing practices are NOT legit.  They are trying to balance bill me for the discounted portion of my trip to the ER.  They have been provided with information showing that the doc was in network but they continue to bill me stating that he was out of network.  I immediately paid them what I owed them according to my EOB from the Insurance company but continue to receiving harassing phone calls and bills from them.  I have an appointment with an attorney tomorrow.  This is ridiculous.

They left me a voicemail saying it's Maria and to call them back, but did not say for what. Don't know how they got my full name nor number, but definitely sketchy voicemail.

This is just another collection agency.Same attitude, same misleading and dishonest tactics, same utter lack of concern about whether the demands they are making are valid or not.

NEVER talk to or work with a collection agency. They have one and only one mission; to get you to pay them the amount of money they want. They are NOT here to help you.

Deal ONLY with the actual source of the claim (hospital, emergency doctor billing service, whatever). This suggestion is based on 20+ years as a practicing litigation attorney. Block these calls, don't talk to them, deal only with whoever set these people after you in the first place.

Got a VM today from a nice sounding woman who was very professional, however she did not identify the nature of her call or her company, just her name and number. Sounds Phishy to me.

I was involved in an accident and took an ambulance to the hospital. I have Medi-Cal which pays for everything. If they need my info they need to confer with the hospital which has all of it. I had to fill out a bunch of forms and they took my insurance card to copy.

This can't be a legit company. Sounds like they try to shake-down people for additional funds from accidents.
