I have had a number of calls from 800-592-1160 which I never answer.  Tonight at 8:12, they left a message on my answering machine (first time) saying it was American Express and I needed to call them back at that number on an important matter.  My personal experience with American Express is that they specialize in consumer fraud.  Reason:  I retired 2 1/2 years ago and my sister in California sent me an American Express Gift Card in the amount of $50.  I tried for over 2 years to use the card but couldn't find anyone I did business with that took American Express.  On my last try, I discovered the card expired after 2 years.  I called the number on the back of the card and was told the account still had a value of $36 and that they would send me a new card.  In other words, they charged my sister $14 for loaning them money interest free.  I got my new gift card and took some friends to Chili's for lunch just to get rid of it before it lost any more value.  I can't foresee any circumstance where I would do business with American Express for the rest of my life.  My advice would be to not do business with American Express.

If you are right then I will make a fortune. See I finalized my bankruptcy 6 months ago and they are not allowed to call me under penalty of the law.
Sounds like some kind of scam.
I would not think they could be that stupid to loose $15,000 with the attorney general collecting for me.

Had a call today from 800-592-1160 - -- caller ID was "800 Service"  (Not American Express or AMEX !!)

I answered the call from 1-800-592-1160 and was never connected to a "live" agent.

So - you can conclude that this call was originated by an automated dialer which is simply trying to find people to answer the phone - -- and which then tries to transfer to a  "live" agent who then tries to do whatever it is that they want to do - - - - BUT - - seems like all their agents were BUSY !!!!!  so the dialer had no one to connect my call to . .. . LOL ! ! ! ! ! !  what morons . ..

This IS OBVIOUSLY NOT AMERICAN EXPRESS security.  REAL Security folks dont use batch demon dialers to call folks with problems on their accounts !  They also don't need you to GIVE THEM your card number but will use other info such as the name on the card or  your phone number to identify and look up whatever problem they MIGHT have - - - but, again - only if this is a LEGIT security service !!!!!!

EVEN IF THIS WAS  American Express or one of their agents doing MARKETING  - -- - you dont need to answer .

If it IS someone else doing phishing - - - you DEFINATELY dont need to answer.
Posts above which are trying to suggest that this is a "legitimate" Amex call are probably just as bogus as the people you talk to if you answer and may even be from someomeon with an financial interest in whoever is running this service  !  Dont waste your  time answering - - - if you do, I suggst you politely tell them to "F" off and hang up.

I rarely use my cell phone.  It is for emergencies only.  Therefore, when I happened to check it today, I was shocked to see 13 voicemail messages!  All from...... American Express.  Well that is odd.  A) don't give out the number and B) refused to ever get one of their cards because I too received a gift card that lost money.  I didn't call the number it sounded too fishy.  I Googled the American Express numbers.  called one.  It wanted my account number. I don't have one.  Called a different number.  Asked for a representative and was put on hold for at least 30 minutes.  Told her my story.  She had no idea if it was a legitimate number or not.  PUT ME ON HOLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Came back several times to check on me.  Then finally gave me a toll free number to call.  Are you kidding!  This woman looked up my name, said that I didn't have an account, and she saw no reason for them to have called me.  Agreed it sounded like fraud since they never say MY name or a reference number.  I asked to speak to the Fraud department.  She also agreed it sounded fishy or that someone put my number in by mistake.  She called the number and said it was legitimate.  That I could call it just to see why they called.  I tried, but it wanted my non existent account number.  Waste of 2 hours of my life.  Thanks for listening.  I feel better knowing you experienced problems with them.  Thanks for letting me vent.  Take care.  I am better now! :)

Got the same call, from 800-592-1160 asking for my wife's phone number.  Refused to give them the number and asked what the call was about.  They said they couldn't tell me and hung up.  My wife will do as others are doing, which is to call the number on her AMEX card and see if they need to talk to her.

I hope someone at a federal level is tracking this thread in case this is a phishing scam.

I get these calls on my cell, on my computer, at my home twice to 3 times a day.  No one ever answers.  I used to get the "this is American Express" story until I chlleneged them to produce some information about me or my account.  They could not.  But these stupid calls persist.

    Guys,

I just called American Express from the number on the back of my card. This IS NOT them calling, but a phising scam instead by some illegal party. You need to call the American Express number on the back of your card and report these people. They are currently investigating them through their security department. I suspect the people that have posted on here that the 1-800-592-1160 is really American Express calling you is in on the scam or trying to confuse people. Call the real American Express YOURSELF...... IT IS A SCAM.... DO NOT CALL THAT NUMBER.

Got one of these calls at work with no name behind the call.  Sounded only slightly legit except 1) they don't mention your name 2) it's well automated 3) they never called my cell or home# which Amex has done in the past. They're idiots.

I received the same urgent "American Express" messages on my machine (at least 2 per day for a week).  I called the number on my card and my account was in good standing.  So I called this number back.  When asked for my account number I kept telling them "operator".  Finally, I got a person who told me that they couldn't tell me why they called until I gave them my account number.  Which I didn't of course and then told them to take me off their call list.  They CLAIM that my number will be removed.  Only time will tell.  If not, I'll most likely file a claim with the FCC.

Calls every night at the same time at my workplace for about a solid month. Repeatedly called and told them I do not have an AMEX card, and to stop calling. Contacted American Express' customer service number on their website and informed them of these calls, and the number calling. American Express confirmed the number is NOT registered to them.

AT&T reports this toll-free number has been on lease since 2006. I've called multiple times and told them to stop calling. Monday I will be filing complaints with the federal trade commission, local law enforcement, and pretty much anyone else I can find. If I find out the actual companies name (which is probably not going to take too long) I'll post it.

I have been getting random calls at all hours of the day including weekends from this American Express number. I don't have an Amex account. This is rather annoying and needs to stop immediately.

I've gotten calls from 336-393-1085, 954-503-2843, 801-945-9061, 800-592-1160, 212-380-3114, and 623-492-8037. My bill at AmEx was due on 5/2.  I started getting calls on Sat, 5/7. They gave me Mother's Day off, but I've gotten 5 calls a day since.  I've had this account for over 10 years & this is the first time I've been late.  It's really pretty ridiculous.  I'm only ignoring them because they've tried to hide their identity!   They leave one message (the first call of the day), stating that they are American Express & that it isn't a telemarketing call, but they leave a different 800 number for me to call.  I'm sure it probably is them, because I'm overdue, but I'd be wary of calling any number except the one given to me by AmEx on the back of my card & giving them any information.

Shame on you, your assumption that Amex can never make a mistake is staggering in its arrogance. I know for a fact that my account is NOT PAST DUE because it is set up on automatic payment. Maybe you should try doing your job instead of jerking people around.

We have a message left on our voicemail every night between 7:00pm-8:00pm by someone claiming to be from AMEX and that it is not a telemarketing call.  Just that the matter is "urgent".   I suppose if it was so "urgent" they would call us during business hours.  The calls really need to stop.

Yep, as the above posters mention, it's a scam caller claiming to be AmEx, "vishing" for account information.  You can read about my experience here, if you'd like: http://tinyurl.com/6cxlgcu

If you have an AmEx account, I recommend calling their official customer service number (probably listed on the back of your card or on their official website) before calling this number.
