- NO AMEX Card| 2 repliesI received a call from the following caller ID: 336-393-7010, from a woman named Laura from Amex asking to call regarding urgent personal business issues. I don't have an AMEX card, and she had the wrong first name. She said to call 1-800-529-1160. Based on these posts, no way!

- Not an AmEx cardholderI have never had an AmEx account. I got a message on my work phone number (which has been my extension for three years) saying the same thing others have heard - important business matter, call 800-592-1160 by the end of the day. Maybe somebody put my phone number as contact info on their account, but it seems more likely to me that it's a scam.
But if the 800 number is legit, I'm not sure how the scam would work. I guess they could be softening you up for future calls. In any case, I would never call a phone number left in a voicemail if it regards credit. The only safe approach is to call numbers you already know are good. - UnknownOur company received three calls for one of our employees who utilizes a company Amex card, paid for by the company. I am the administrator for the program. After they asked for the employee, I told them I was the administrator and could help them. They said my name was not on the program and it was a personal matter. No matter what I said to help them they refused to discuss anything with me. I called Amex back and they said, of course, my name is on the program as administrator and they can discuss anything with me for all employees and the employee account had no issues to warrant any calls. The Amex rep said they keep records of all calls for all accounts and no calls had been logged for this employee account. I told him the phone number (800-592-1160) where the three calls had come from and he checked the Amex system and said that it was not an Amex phone number and not to share ANY information with anyone who calls from that number.

- Cmac replies to BiyI just spoke to American Express (called the number on the back of my card) and they explicitly told me DO NOT CALL that number (1-800-592-1160) back.

By the sound of the voice this person was a young man who grew up in a Hispanic neighborhood due to his accent and grammer. Couldn't tell what race he was... Just that his grammer, accent, speech pattern, and diction were best described for simplicity as a person raised in the presence of people from Hispanic Cultures. Very well could have been African, or Jewish, or Gay, or White, or Purple, or Hindu, or Striaght, or Inter-sexed too for that matter...

No company name given, just an unintelligible personal name and the same 800 number you all got. - LOL| 4 repliesAll you people are funny. Because I know for a fact that 18005921160 is a legit number. A friend of mine works for them, and IT IS AMEX! they are collections angecy. They call you because you haven't payed you bills on time, or late on a payment or a cheque you sent in bounced back. Its the credit department. If you want to make payments over the phone, this is number you call. They can also varify account activity. The reason why you guys think its fraud because you are the ones that don't pay their bills on time and try to play stupid. Pay your bills on time and you won't receive any calls.

- RobI called the number on the back of my card after receiving a number of messages to call AMEX at 800-592-1160. The Account Rep I spoke to, Tasha, said that this is not a number owned by AMEX. It is a known fraud ring that attempts to have you call in "with your account number", they then ask that you verify your account by confirming your Social Security Number. Bingo! That's the point of the scam.
According to AMEX, a marketing firm that AMEX works with had names and contact information compromised, and these guys are now operating the scam based on the info they have gathered. It is in no way a legitimate piece of the AMEX operation.
The poster on here who represents his or herself as different people that have verified that this "IS" in fact an AMEX line, is probably connected to the scam and is trying to get people to feel comfortable to call.
Just remember, AMEX will NEVER ask for your Social Security Number as confirmation of your account.
It's annoying as hell but there's little that can be done at this point unless you're willing to go to the effort of filing a complaint with your local police department.- Call type: Debt collector
- Dan-nyc| 4 repliesYes, confirmed today 12/1/2009 that 800-592-1160, 866-231-9049 and 623-492-6031 are all American Express numbers -- genuine. Some are unlisted numbers but they are all part of AmEx. It's not totally clear why they have hidden numbers or why they are calling people asking for SS# and card numbers. AmEx clearly states on their web site that they never call and ask for your full numbers -- but that is exactly what they are doing. I just spent several hours with them on the phone today talking to their fraud department, because at first I suspected this was a scammer. But these are all originating from AmEx. Even more bizarre is that the fraud dept kept asking for my SS# also (even though I don't even have an account with them). Obviously I didnt' give it (never give this out). They call me from this number all day and night.
The bad news is that they seem to be robocalling everyone in the U.S. -- maybe trying to sign them up for AmEx (motivation not clear). Very annoying because they keep calling even though I'm on the do not call list and have asked repeatedly not to be called. They call on average every few hours for the past few weeks.
The good news is that you can easily sue them for $500 per call. I'm doing this right now, and will post my results when done -- but others have done this successfully. It's very easy and cheap to do. In NY, just stop by the courthouse, fill out a very simple 1 page form, and pay $20. Since they called me 7 times in the past 48 hours, I'm suing for $3500 + the $20 court fee.
Robo-calls to a home phone number is illegal (except for charities and political campaigns). So if AmEx called you and you didn't ask them to -- you're entitled to $500 per call. It's an easy way to make money and also tell Amex not to bother you again. When you fill out your small claims paperwork -- just mention they are violating the Federal Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) -- which clearly states that automated calls are illegal. If you are on the Do Not Call registry, or have asked them to stop calling you in the past, you may even be entitled to more money.
This only takes a few minutes, and is easy to do -- so please give it a try. If Amex has annoyed you with their repeated robo-calls, this is a great way to get some justice -- and some extra money. Best of luck!- Caller: American Express

0845 I picked up: got an automated voice telling me "AMEX business issue ... call is important ... wait on the line" then they hung up; I presumed they ran out of agents
1457: caller left voicemail "AMEX important business matter; call by end of day; ...". CallerID was interesting; call from name "602 537 9012" and number "6234926031" so clearly confusing. I called and was asked for my account number; didn't provide it and hang up.
I checked with my AMEX card supplier; they did not originate the calls and the account is in good standing as always (so LOL from 14 Oct 2009 - watch who you are impugning). I'm keeping a list of the calls and will go the small claims route when I've collected enough for a decent gift! (thanks DAN-NYC)- Caller: AMEX (reportedly)

I know in small claims a lot of contact info and evidence is needed. Seems like this would be hard to give since AMEX is all over.

Lorraine - Dan-nyc replies to Lorraine| 2 repliesYes, I'm following up on this. The only proof you need is a photo of you caller ID (just use your digital camera or cell phone). Make sure to take a picture for each call they placed.
AmEx doesn't seem to deny the calls once you "catch them" on this. They actually called me after I filed my small claims case and admitted the calls. They offered to settle for $1500, but I've refused. Looking back at my caller ID, I see they've actually called me about 50 times -- so I'm moving my case to a higher court an suing for a much larger sum.
But if you want to keep it simple, all you need is your photos of the calls, and $20 to file a small claims case.
If you live in NYC, and you're not an AmEx customer (and haven't contacted them to sign up for or find out about a card), then I've learned you're actually entitled to $1500 per call.
Just stop by the small claims court, at 111 Centre Street (downtown manhattan), Room 322. Fill out the simple one-page form (CIV-SC-50, which you can also download from the NYC gov web site if you want to fill it out ahead of time). Pay the clerk $20 and you'll get a court date (always in the evening around 6:30pm, usually for about a month or so away). That's it. Really couldn't be simpler.
When you fill out the form, your case is against American Express, 200 Vesey Street, NY NY 10285. In the Primary Reason for Claim area, simply put "Violation of Federal TCPA" - or Telephone Consumer Protection Act. If they called you 3 times, it's $1500 per call ($4500), plus the $20 you spent filing the form -- so you'd be suing for $4520. Remember, there is a maximum of $5000 in small claims -- so if you want to sue for me (ie. there were more calls) you'll need to take it to regular civil court (at that point, you'd probably want a lawyer).
I found a lawyer that handles this (at no charge up front, just a percent of the winnings), but if it's a small number of calls, small claims is really the easiest way to go. AmEx will almost certainly call to settle -- but either way, you're going to win something, and the annoying calls will stop.

- Tom replies to BillGot a call from these guys. Asked for my number. I didn't give it and he said "But you called me you know I'm american express!" To which I responded "Have you heard of phishing? I have no confirmation that you're american express. Could I have some of my personal information?" To which he got flustered and hung up on me.
I called real AmEx (back of card number) and they confirmed that the number is one of theirs and all was well. I told them to please crush whatever idiot was abusing their number and they seemed like they might. - futae| 1 replyI was getting this call repeatedly from AMEX, I contacted them and they verified the number is theirs. She apologized and sent me a gift card for $50 and stopped the calls, well worth the time of registering a complaint.
