- Bedhead| 1 replyYes, this is indeed AmEx calling to remind cardholders when their payments are late. Mine is legitimately late, so I appreciated the first call. However, I received TEN (yes, the number between 9 and 11) calls within about a 30-minute period -- different voices, same reminder -- at my work number. How embarrassing! Each time, I had to explain that I would make a payment online (and no, I did not want to make it over the phone so my coworkers could all hear my account information) and each time, the caller promised to note the information on my account history. Within minutes, another call.
I think AmEx is trying to make a point. "Don't EVER be late with your payment or we will humiliate you as best we can!" It worked. I won't ever make a late payment again, but I probably won't ever use my AmEx card again, either.- Caller: American Express

- JGcalled twice today, and left different caller ID ... 'toll free caller' and 'unknown name' ... said from AmEx. Nah ... I doubt that's from there.
- Bridgett replies to BedheadThat's one of the reasons I don't give out work numbers anymore. You can request that they don't call you at work and if they do it again after the request has been made, you can report them.
- Tweedle DeeFor the folks vehemently insisting that this is a legitimate Amex number: you are probably right, but have you ever heard of spoofing? That's where the scammer gets a legitimate number to appear on your caller ID so you'll be more likely to answer it and give them the information they want. I just got a call from this number, but I have never had an Amex card, so I know they're phishing. When in doubt, call the number on the back of your card.

- Michael JonesJust received a call from this number. I don't have an account, but I gave them my info so i could have them check for fraud. What should I do next?
- Caller: American Express
- John Boy in IllinoisThis is a HIGH LEVEL SCAM! It is FRAUD...please read!!! American Express is confused, and doesn't know how to handle this fraudulent set up. I've spoken the Amex cust. service 5 times (the # on the back of the card) about this issue. Amex will tell you that 800-592-1160 is a real Amex #, part of their Credit Services Dept. What Amex doesn't understand, and they can't seem to confirm, is that 800-592-1160 has been stolen from them. Scammers are using it for caller ID, and are calling people using the number. When you call 800-592-1160 back, it sounds just like the real Amex, but it isn't. They are just trying to get your cc or ssn # and personal info. I spoke with Amex Credit Services Dept. and confirmed my account is in good standing. Credit Services has no record of ever calling me, and did not even have my phone # on record. However I have rec'd 17 calls from 800-592-1160, all saying they are Amex. They have asked for relatives who have died, and ones that don't live with me, etc. I've reported the problem to Amex upper mgmt, but they seem unwilling to help...got no follow-up or repsonse from Amex. We are on our own to deal with these scammers. Whenever 800-592-1160 calls me now, I use an air horn on them...and hopefully it is destroying their ear drums.

- Sue D'NemI received a call from the number at 7:30 a.m.?!?!?! Isn't it illegal for them to call that early in the morning?!?!?
They asked for a name I had never heard of and certainly not someone who lives at my phone number. The lady assured me that they would remove my number. - anonymous replies to KSthis 800 number is their business card line.
- anonymous replies to ntcthis is in fact AE 800 business number. this number is legit............
- MPI received a call from this number for a couple of days before it managed to get to the top of my To Do list. I did NOT call the number back but I did call the number on the back of my card.
In my instance it WAS AmEx about a missed payment. I'm on auto payment, however I didn't update my card information with them when I received my new debit card after I lost it.- Caller: American Express

- Fraud SquadPart of a fraud campaign targeting numerous financial institutions. Note the pattern of shill postings all claiming the number is real - an obvious giveaway.
The large number of phony posts claiming the call is real come from some con artists spamming the site to try to fool people. There is a similar pattern to other fake calls claiming to be from Chase, Citibank, Bank of America, US Bank, Wells Fargo, RBC, PayPal, etc. all with the same shill postings:

- ruthfulgraceThis is AMEX--I just received a call about a late payment and the amount past due $234.00
They did ask for me to make a payment on the phone by giving them my checking number and routing info. I declined stating I wasn't sure if it was AMEX. I did make a payment online through my bank.
Then I called AMEX directly and they noted there was a call to me today to remind me to make a payment for the same amount. I was told they have several different 800 numbers that they use to contact customers.- Caller: AMEX

- LabritI believe that they are FAKING the CALLER ID. The number is legitimate, however, when I CALLED the NUMBER on the BACK of my AMERICAN EXPRESS card they told me that is one of their numbers. They also told me my account was in really good standing, so WHOEVER was calling from that phone number is FAKE. TOTALLY FRAUDULENT!!!

- wynterkitty 2012My mother received a voice mail message telling her it was important to call this number as soon as possible. She received three calls in one day so she called them back. She doesn't have an Amex card and never has. They asked for her name and number and told her they have no information on her and no idea why anyone would call her. I wish she had spoken to me first. As to whether this is an authentic Amex number I have no idea.

- Don replies to DorisSo it is clear to everyone caller id is not reliable a phonecall you get can be from any number yet your caller idcan be another number. It only makes sense a thief would send your caller id the number of a credit card company so they can steal.
