- trash telemarketersUnknown caller, so never answer or call back. Robocaller left message on answering machine claiming to be American Express. No one in this household has or has ever had an AMEX account or card. 100% spoofing scam.
- Caller: American Express spoof

- Brad| 1 replyThis phone number - 800-582-1160 is a scam. Do not give out any info. I called American Express, and they said it was their phone number. Scammers can sometimes "hijack" a phone number and use it. I think that is what happened here. With all of their money American Express should be able to fix this, and prevent it.

- SalRSame as all of the others...getting calls from this number as well as another non-toll free number and I listen/screen all robo-calls to see who and what msg(s) they are leaving, turns out to be Amex saying, "this is not an ad or sales call, but an urgent matter concerning your account"...trouble is I have no Amex account, never did.

- xx| 1 replyReceived a call claiming to be American express - Caller ID stated "Toll Free Call". If it was from American Express then this would have appeared in the caller ID. Since the caller is hiding their identity then i automatically assume tht they are liars and scammers as why else would they feel the need to mislead who they are/represent!
- Caller: Toll Free Call

- JoyceScam call. My account was fine per the phone number on the back of my card. NOT the number they left to call. 800-592-1160
- Caller: American express imposter
- SallyThe posts on this phone number go all the way back to 2009. Same message. It must be working because they are still doing it. Got a call today. My cell phone automatically identified it as fraudulent and blocked it. Wow.

- RedphishBeen getting calls for about 2 months, some times several (2-3) in a day from a number showing as 800-592-1160 and purporting to be AMEX. They are usually from a real person, leaving a message for someone who HASN'T LIVED HERE SINCE 2007! Most recently there was a robocall from that number that was followed by a real person saying "hello ...... hello?" and hanging up. As mentioned above, they also called around 6:45 one morning.
One time they called and left a message for that person's mother to call them, leaving the 592-1160 number. The mother has never had an AMEX card. So it has the smell of a security breach at American Express that yielded phone numbers and "Next of Kin" information back in the 2007 - 2009 time frame and some group keeps phishing in the same pond.
All the voices I've heard had no foreign accent, so I'm guessing the calls originate in the USA, but don't come from AMEX, since the original target confirmed with AMEX that our number does not appear in their records for the target.- Caller: probably fake AMEX

- Eye RaisedGot the same call from 800-592-1160 claiming to be AMX; however, they call my work number and I have never had an AMX card.

- JimReceived calls two days in a row leaving this automated message, "Hello this message is from American Express. This is not a telemarketing sales call we are calling you to discuss an important matter. Please return our call at 1-800-592-1160. We will be available Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM until midnight. Saturday 8:00 AM until 6:30 PM and on Sunday 10:00 AM until 8:30 PM Eastern Time. Thank you." Caller ID was different from this number and not the same between the two days. Called Amex on the number listed on the back of the card. Was told that the calls did not come from Amex. While the phone number is real, it is only given to card holders who have a small outstanding over due balance. I was assured that not only did this not apply to me, but that these calls did not come from Amex. In short, the calls are a scam.

- nancy replies to BiySCAM. Pretending to be American Express to get your SS #.
- BillDSame as another person noted - very official sounding call, but I know AmEx doesn't need to talk to me.

- BeckyJust received a call from 800-592-1160, claiming to be American Express and to call back between such and such hours. The odd thing about the message was that it started with music (sounded like hold music), then a woman very loudly saying "Hello? Hello?" And she then proceeded with the message. Haven't called Amex to report it yet, but definitely will!

- Margret Agnes AtwaterI answered and it was American Express, they asked me to enter my card number and security code to verify it was me. I also verified my name and address. They told me it was to verify my information since there was some suspicious activity. I hung up happily knowing that American Express always has my back and is why I am a card member since 1967. A few days later they called again saying there is suspicious activity and $14,560 had been charged to my account. I thought it was a scam because I don't charge that much ever. I told them to not call again. I got a letter in the mail that I was charged this. It turned out the first call was the scammers and the second was the real American Express.
