It was American Express. They left a message asking to call back. I did call but dialed their main number instead. They confirmed it was them, and they had a question about my billing address.

Yep, me too--got a call claiming to be from AmEx. I closed my account about a year ago, so naturally I was suspicious. I, too, looked up the main number at americanexpress.com and called them, instead. They confirmed that my account is closed.

Got voicemail from caller id 16234926031
said American Express.  Asked to call back 18005921160.
I called the number behind my card instead.  They said all is well.

Dont know if this was an attempt to steal personal info.  Got 2 voicemails previos voicemails from a different caller id.

I had messages both at work and at home.  I called the 800 number on the back of my AMEX card (not the same number) and the rep indicated that while I have an outstanding balance (this is an AMEX Blue) that no payment is due at this time.  I asked why I got a call and he said he had no idea but apologized.  He also verified that the 800 number left on the message is their number.  The card was recently cancelled.

Ditto to all the above.  The most suspicious part of it is they call on our toll free line which we have not given to them (or hardly anyone for that matter). We also had a rash of similar phone calls about a month ago from a caller id number of 954-503-1500. Messages always say to call back due to an "urgent business matter" by the end of the day. I would call the American Express number from my card or their website and they would report nothing unusual.

I also received a call from 1-800-592-1160 from American Express about an important business matter and that I should call back by the end of the day.  I also called back using the telephone number on the back of my card.  It was American Express.  I was called in error. This telephone number, 1-800-592-1160, is their bad credit department, used to call individuals whose accounts are not in good standing.

I received a call from a company claiming they were AMEX.  I wrote down the number they asked for me to call back (1-800-592-1160).  Instead, I called AMEX using the 800 number on the back of my card.  Come to find out the 800 number that was left on the message is NOT an AMEX number.  This is a FRAUD.  I have reported the number to AMEX and their fraud team is looking into this.  Please, whatever you do, do NOT call back this company.  Instead, use the 800 number on the back of your card and speak with a representative directly.  Make sure you have the number that the caller left for you to return so the rep can verify if it is an AMEX number.  I have been getting atleast two calls per week from this company.  The call comes from 623-492-6031.

I just received calls from that number on my work phone, cell phone, and home phone. Saying that it was an urgent matter. I called the number but I didnt feel comfortable giving my account number since I didnt know what was going on. When i tried to speak to a representative the phone just hung up. I called the number on the back of my card and they said that nothing is wrong with my account and that I am in good standing. I gave him the 1800 number given to me and he informed me that the number was not showing in American Express database. Be careful guys.

I've also receiving phishing text messages from Credit Union.

Yep I got the same phone call.. It was pretty funny. I called american express directly and they advised me my account was in good standing. So I called the scammers back and told them they were a bunch of theives trying to get peoples info. They argued with me and told me I was crazy to think that.. I told them to stick it were the sun doesn't shine in a lot more words then that. They hung up on me. I am still getting messages from them.

I have been receiving calls from 800-592-1160.  The message left claims to be an important business matter, and I must call back by end of the day.  I called the number back and before the call can even be started, a recorded message asks me to enter my american express card number.  To make it even more bogus, the name they used for me is a nickname, not anywhere on my account!!!

This is NOT Amex, they just SAY they are. I called and gave a fake account number. A lady came on the line and asked for my name and Social Security number!

I called Amex and they confirmed that this is NOT one of their numbers.

Received this call at 8:46 a.m. on 02/22/09, a Sunday morning.  I have never had an AmEx card and did not appreciate being awakened at this hour.  "This is American Express calling about a very imortant business matter.  Your attention to this matter is urgently needed by the end of the day.  Please call us at 1-800-592-1160 and please have your American Express account number available when you call.  We can we reached 24 hours a day."

I received a voicemail to call 1-800-592-1160 and they stated they are American Express.

I did not call that number, but called the number on the back of my card.

The rep investigated the number and said it was an American Express number, but there would be no reason for the call because my account is in good standing.

I informed this rep that something needs to be done, because I am receiving weekly calls and sometimes the calls come in early Saturday morning.

It is obvious that this was an older 800# used by AE and there is someone who is using it to their advantage.

Unfortunately, if people use the number left by this fraudulent caller, they will be hurt, since it is not really AE calling.

I told the rep that this has to be looked into now and made her aware of this site.

IT IS AMEX! replies to Alk
This posting freaked me out....I got the same message and then did call AMEX through the number on the back of my card because of these postings....that's all you have to do and they will confirm 1-800-592-1160 is an AMEX card number...don't take my word for it though (unlike these freaks who get off on scaring people), always call the number on the back of your card....

Don't know why on earth people would make people even more paranoid than they already are...but my final advice (even in spite of the number being valid) is not to do what I did and call the number on the message first...if it's an AMEX issue, you can always call the number of the back of your card first just to be safe...just mention that the call said to call another number, but you wanted to play it safe....
