    defaulted
CTI is not really any worse then other companies that try to collect for a debt. My gf was two months late on her mustangs car payment and the ford motor credit without trying to work with (like putting the two delinquent payments to the end of a new loan they could write her) her put her loan in a repo state so of course we had to move the car. We have paid back almost all of the money she was behind on and have been paying the regular payment amounts of around 600 per month but, still we receive calls from some dip who calls himself Investigator Ortiz and trying to sound like a law officer by saying things like I need to ask you some questions as to the whereabouts of ******** *****'s mustang. I've told this guy I don't even see my gf anymore but guess he caught me cause of him researching facebook. The reason I know the collectors use facebook is because I don't have my correct last name on Facebook but my girl does, so he sees her status as engaged and then clicks my profile to see my info and then calls my number asking if I'm the name so and so (which is the name on my facebook page) I say could be whom do I have the pleasure of speaking with and he says he's Investigator Ortiz. Guess he didn't realize he called same number a week prior asking for me by my real name, which by the way I have no idea of how he had got that originally. So now I'm like WTF when I instantly realized they use facebook to trace people (odd afterthought was that both of our facebook accounts are set to private so maybe they are able get around those privacy measures somehow.

I defaulted on my student loan a few years ago and I own my own company now when i was working for another company cti or whomever, perhaps the gov't themselves, took my tax refunds yearly. In the past on occasion I've felt the urge to work with these shysters, gov't funded ones at that,  but they absolutely have refused to work with me. They've taken 2 loans or was it 3 totaling around 12 to 14 grand and because of fees and nosebleed interest have turned it into something into the twenties. I've told them when I felt the need to aggravate myself I should say, if they brought the total down to something reasonable so i wouldn't be so far away from paying it off and my payments would be reasonable because of the percentage making them less so as to not affect my life so badly I'd be glad to take their offer. They don't understand "reasonable" or it does not profit them, whichever. I'd like to pay this off but it's looking less and less like it's going to happen. I guess they will be paid when it comes to retirement time in my life and my social security, which may or may not even exist by then, will be hit pretty hard by then.

The end of fight club the movie would resolve this issue for all of us. If you haven't seen it go rent it. Good flik.

If you read all this thanks, I read all the other messages from the borrowers and the collectors and the ones who suffer the burden of living in a world with cti that never had a student loan in the first place but get strange calls from them. And although the gov't is willing to give ill run banks financial aid to avoid their closures they aren't willing to consider that erasing our student loan debt would probably push our country back into being a financial leader again before effing china takes us over. Of course that may or may not be accurate but seems true in my head for the moment.

Another thing for all you borrowers and collectors to consider is when I took my loans out they hardly had any free education (unless you had some scholarship for being a star athlete or a genius in high school.) for college students with incentives to get decent grades and your education bill will be paid for. Now everyone I have met young or old is going to college or at least taking courses because the lottery is paying their way if they keep up their grades, hell I graduated top 10 percentile with an honor seal on my diploma, not that the lottery paying for your education is that stringent on your grades nowadays, I'm sure you have to at least keep a 80s percentile or like a 3.4 or better average to get lottery help (i don't know). But maybe every other month the lottery system could be paying off these damn old loans of the people that weren't offered lottery money back then but have built this country into today for the people that are benefiting from lottery education money now. How about we  receive some benefits and then perhaps we could go back to school again like these people I see in mid to late 30's into their 40's going to school and scoring great jobs because they already have a much more expansive view of the world and know what they want to do in life as a career or just to have more knowledge in a particular subject, I am rather jealous of those people that didn't take on the sallie may or whatever company it was loans way back when and now waited for a free ride by people's gambling habits.

I hope someone can take my ramblings and bunch of ideas randomly thrown into this message and sort it out into a concise simple format for the majority that probably stopped reading this after the third sentence. Lottery money is the answer to get us all out of debt, it's an idea and I don't see a problem in it because everyone gets paid. You will be by your debt being erased, CTI will somehow by being the middle man in the collection from the lotto system, and uncle sam will by getting their loaned money returned to them with expansive interest. Of course uncle sam will send it to wherever in the world I havent been and don't know anybody and probably nobody I do know knows anybody there either. Because they have a flood or earthquake or plague or a civil war or whatever reason, but the money will surely go there before it goes state side to help americans. Best place to put the paid back money is the gov't could pay these houses off for the people getting foreclosures on there extremely depreciated houses, but thats another subject all together. peace to all of ya'll usaorganizer1@gmail.com

    I hate this company
They kept calling me several times and left a message. When I called back, noone answered me. Then when I was able to talk with them, I found that the person they want to get is not me. They told me a strange SSN, a strange date of birth...Then after finding that I wasn't the one they were looking for, they hang up without saying goodbye or an apology.

    who?
For the last two weeks, I've been getting hang-ups - no message - on the answering machine.  Finally today, someone named Elana left a message and said she had "important information."  I called back and she wanted to "verify" my SSN and DOB.  I've been told by lawyers to NEVER give this information over the phone.  I asked her who she was and why she was calling.  She said CTI is a collection agency.  When I refused to give her the information she requested - which she has no business asking for in the first place - she said refused to tell me the nature of her call.  I told her if I receive another call from her or CTI, I will file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission.

Just received a call from this number: 1-800-620-4284
    at 10:32 AM on October 7, 2011
    and 4:00 PM yesterday, October 6, 2011.

Both times I did not answer because I do not answer unsolicited phone calls. Since it was not important enough for them to leave a message, it is not important enough for me to call them back.

I believe this is a scam number and business. DO NOT ANSWER THEIR CALLS!!!

All right ... It's been a while so I will post this again:

p.s. - you may have been left as a reference/associate for someone else. Don't get mad at us if your friends/relatives leave you as a contact person because they don't keep their information updated.

    Dear Readers:

You need to educate yourself about the laws of student loan collections before making the decision to just avoid the calls and hope it will go away.

Here are a few points you will hear when talking to a contracted company of the Dept of Education regarding your student loans:
Administrative Wage Garnishment provisions provide for the garnishment of your wages, directly from your employer, without going to court and without your permission.
Also, in the event of non-payment, the Department of Education may decide it is necessary to forward your account to the U.S. Department of Justice to file a civil lawsuit against you.
They’ve passed a law to extend indefintely the statute of limitations on defaulted student loans, which essentially means you will owe this forever.
Department of Education can add up to 24% in collection fees of your principal and interest.
And, they’ve implemented a program to sieze all Federal Tax Refunds and may seize State Tax Refunds in the near future as well.

This is not consumer debt, so the leverage collection agencies have for these student loans is ligitimate. BUT ... there are ways you can resolve the account and get some benefits.
Settlements are available where you can do a pay off at a reduced amount if you can do a 1 time lump sum pay off.
Rehabilitation requires you to make an approved payment for 9-10 months, then the account(s) will no longer be in default, cleans up your credit, and the collection and miscellanious fees get waived. You will have to update a complete financial statement 1st ... just like if you apply for a car or personal loan. You have so justify why you can not pay it off in full and that you can support a monthly payment plan. The references are used in the event the collector loses contact with you, these will be people who will know how to get a message to you. Your personal account information can not be disclosed.
Want to go back to school and finish your education? Ask about Title IV (Title Four).

Yes ... I am a collector, and I think it's important for all of you to know true information about student loans instead is nonsense opinions that some people post on these walls. Believe it or not, we are trying to help you resolve your account before the account gets forwarded for garnishment.

The choice is yours ... usually voluntary payments are a lot cheaper than 15% of your wages. If we can't reach you, you leave us no other choice.

    Good luck!

In the early 90's I got a student loan from "Southern Technical".  It had a little over 700 students. We attended classed there for about 5 months and one day came in for class and the building was empty and the doors were locked. A few days later, I get a letter in the mail from them informing me that the school had closed in my State. (no kidding) Their letter stated that they would be happy to transfer me to another school in another state. The nearest school was 7 hours away.  I was a student, unemployed and could not move to another state, I asked for the loans to be refunded and never heard from them again. Now, all these years later, I'm expected to pay back a loan that the school itself did not fulfill it's obligation to the students.  If CTI wants the money, they can go after "Southern Tech"

Jut recently started getting calls from this agency(strangely, after NCO stopped).  Never say what call is about, very cryptic.  Had a student loan over 20 years ago, I did default(low salary; unemployment, divorce), but have since paid 2/3 back and can see the light at the end of the tunnel.  WHY are they still bothering me?

You need to educate yourself about the laws of student loan or any collections, as well as plain old common sense.
You cannot legally collect if you're contacting the wrong person.  Let that be number one on your list.
And, since you are apparently hiding who you are on most of your initial calls, do not expect anyone to call you back; why on earth would ANYONE call back an anonymous caller?  As you note, since student loans cannot usually be discharged and stay with you forever, there is no reason to hide who you are.  You are also required by Federal Law to identify yourselves when attempting to collect.
Any garnishment or seizure needs to be proceeded by civil, legal action, which you need to noify people of BEFORE it takes place.   How many cases have been thrown back at you because you didn't let the correct person know about the suit?
If you have a contact point to do a garnishment, then you have a way to contact the correct person.
Save the smug self-serving posts; do your job and do it well and you'll be fine; keep going after the wrong people and hiding who you are is NOT doing your job.

Don't you understand people this is a student loan! Which you will pay back regardless. Student loan debt is FOR LIFE until you die! you cant claim it in a bk or dismiss it any other way. If they have your information they don't NEED to speak to you to garnish your wages, tax returns or social security. Its in your best interest to speak with them so they can help you. They are unable to speak to anyone in regards to there debt without verifying they have the right person. These are skip tracers trying to collect a debt, they no more information about you then you think. By you hanging up the phone does NOTHING to them they already have the info they need to take back the money you owe them with or without your permission. They have to attempt contact before they go further and just TAKE your money, and it will happen, sooner or later. If they have the wrong person, tell them that! Its very simple. Collection agencies for student loans have more power than you think. FOR THE PEOPLE WHO DON'T WANT TO MAN UP AND JOIN THE REST OF SOCIETY AND PAY BACK THERE DEBT, THAT'S FINE, CAUSE THEY WILL TAKE IT FROM YOU.

My son is being garnished for a student loan. CTI is the name on his check stub. He did'nt know anything about even having it. His Dad took out this loan when he first enrolled in college back in 2007.  His dad stopped paying for it. He received a fax at his current job stating they need his SS# and to sign something. He thought it was a letter from a job prospect. It didn't say to much. If he or I (his mom, who is divorced from his dad) would have known about it, we would have gladly worked some payment arrangements out. It was only a little over $2,000. Next thing he knew his checks were being garnised. SO, we sent the entire amount he owed to them. That was 3 months ago! His wages are still being garnised! We can never get anyone to answer or return our calls. Finally spoke with someone on the federal government site and she had us fax documentation , ( copy of bank statement, and check where it cleared). Still he is being garnished! He does'nt make that much to begin with and he can't get this stopped. Can anyone tell us how to handle this situation. This is so unfair. Also, if he were to find another job somewhere else, will they still be able to garnish his wages?

Just got a call, didn't answer. I've been unemployed almost a year now... I wasn't eligible for unemployment benefits. I really can't afford to deal with these people right now and have simply decided to not answer. I'm done dealing with all this credit [***]; if they want me to pay a debt then they can find me a job to do it with.
