What I assume is CTI, only because that's who they stated who they were.  In my opinion this so called company is actually a scam artist.  They don't follow the law.  They call and harass individuals over student loans supposably.  They have called my father who is well over the age of 80 years of age stating he has defaulted on a student loan given by the US government.  We have written the United States over this matter.  They have in fact sent us a letter stating that my father has not or ever taken any student loan out and not payed it back to the United States government.    This company continues to call and harass not wanting to substantiate the amount of money owed.  This is because they can't prove my father has ever taken out a loan with the government or anybody.  They will not listen, forcing you only to accept what they say is fact.  I do believe the proper word for this is, "badgering".  I will not be badgered.   I'm well aware of my rights.  They are harassing the elderly in my opinion.  Feeding off the good faith of our parents and grandparents.    However this individual did leave a name and number before I was outraged with this individuals behavior.   If you get a call from a person by the name of Maloy Brando calling from this number 1-800-620-4284.  They are a bad company as well as bad people with know business operating within the United States or anywhere else.   This company should if they are legit have there license revoked, never to be allowed to operate again.

I ran  across this  by  accident.

Government student loans  do not have a statue  of limitation  so it  is  possible that your  80 year old   parent   has a student loan  in default  if you have  any questions  please call   800-620-4284   Ask to speak to a manager

800-620-4284 is a collection agency that's trolling for names, regardless of whether addresses and other info match.
They've called me repeatedly re: anyone with my same last name, despite the fact that the first name or initial are different,  I don't know anyone they're calling about, and I've been the only person at this phone/address for 10+ years.
When I call them back to gripe, they say, "OK, we'll just take you off the list."
NOTE: If -- unlike me -- your name/initial happen to match the one they're calling about, be wary ... because if they "hook" you, you might end up in the hole for a stranger's debt or credit problem.

    To reiterate:
-- If you know the call is in error, don't give them ANY info -- even to prove that you're not who they're looking for.
Their job is to close the file, even if it means getting someone to (wrongly, out of ignorance) assume another's debt, out of ignorance.
Someone here said a caller from this 800 # posed as a govt rep seeking info re: a relative, in order to send a stimulus check. The feds do NOT do that -- and this fakery tells you how crooked this crew is.
-- If they are calling about you, and if it's about a long-past debt or one discharged in bankruptcy: Also be cautious -- and check with a lawyer. These guys might illegally be trying to "revive" a debt that you need not pay, since it was zapped by bankruptcy or the statute of limitations. And if you pay _any portion_ of an old/defunct debt, you're liable for the whole amount all over again.

CTI   only collects on government students
it is practically impossible  to  discharge federal  debt through bankruptcy   . Also  there is no statue of limitations

As a collector  it is there job to  try to locate  the borrower . Some time s they have to call  surname . Which might include   calling someone with the same  name  but they always  verify  who they are  talking to

maybe  you should  do  some research  before you go talking out your [***]
    thanks

they are listed on  line at  ed.gov

called and told of my student loan debt. threatened to garnish my wages.  I paid one payment of $61. I now think was a huge mistake. Danny, the "case worker", was very persuasive in the idea that he was helping me out.  He is now calling my personal cell # at night and demanding another payment or my wages will be garnished.. I now say, garnish my wages! At least I know the debt will be payed and wont have and doubt as to who is receiving my payment!!  So sorry friendly bill collector, you should have been more freindly and trustworthy.

The key to dealing with any defaulted government loan is to educate yourself.
As far as filing bankruptcy on a defaulted student loan, you should be aware that according to Section 523 (A) (8) of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code, student loans are no longer dischargeable. Therefore, bankruptcy is not a solution to this problem.
Call your loan rep and find out what options are available to you. Talk to a manager if necessary, but understand that these loans will not go away.

SOUNDS  to me  like you are on the  rahabiltion  plan.
you should be aware of some of the benefits of paying your
student loans(s) voluntarily. After making six consecutive payments, you may
become eligible for Title IV Student Aid, which may include additional loans
and grants under the Reinstatement Program. Also, with either of these
payment arrangements you enter into, the payments will qualify you for a
program called Loan Rehabilitation. What that means is once you have made 9
to 12 consecutive payments with no problems, like a bounced check, the
Department of Education will show your account is no longer in a federal
defaulted status. They will remove any derogatory remarks from your credit
report as far as this loan is concerned and replace it with current credit
from the new lender, helping you to rebuild your credit scores. They will
waive all of the remaining collection and miscellaneous fees at the time of
rehabilitation. They will also remove this account from the tax offset
program for both State and Federal Tax Returns.

Be careful getting into a rehad program!  Get it in writting FIRST. The collection co for the gov wanted like $300/month which I couldn't afford. kept threatening to garnish my wages, to which I told them it would be less the $125/month. Finaly got them to agree to take $150/month and I'd be rehad'd in 12 months and they'd take off all these penalties and the other stuff you say. I did this with my loans and after the 12th payment they told me my loan wasn't rehabilitated because I owed to much.  I argued for hours and hours over several days with supervisors and managers who kept saying that when I started my $150/month it met the miminum "percentage" but at the end of 12 months with the added interest and penalties (over $150/month) that my 12 concecutive payments were not enough. I argued endlessly, to which they replied, I didn't have a rehad agreement in writing. I wouldn't send them another payment without something in writting- they would not do for less then $250/month ... they finaly garnished my wages and got about $100/month for a couple years till I quit the job. So after 15 yrs, my $6,000 of student loans is now a debt of $27,000! and they can't give me any terms that *I* can afford that will get me out. Bottom line: Don't do a rehad without getting an agreement in writting!

I have called back this number.  First of all I am not the person they are looking for. Second I have told them several times I am not that person.  Third when I called them back today They lied and said that the person they were caling answered the phone. I am the only person living here.  The Machine picked up the call. The person has the same last name but it isn't me.  Even my answering machine doesn't have my name on it. I would like to report them to someone but who. They should have there database up to date.

If these companies violate fair debt collection practices acts, they could be liable for damages.  Most lawyers will give a free consultation; call one.

My lawyer successfully sued Van Ru (in Connecticut) and I got a cash settlement from them.  I had tried to negotiate a settlement some ten years ago.  The collection agent, Mrs. Bailey, demanded terms that I could not possibly honor, called me every name in the book, and refused to consider my counter offer.  Those tactics do not work well.  They never got a dime out of me.  I decided that I would let them sue me.  I figured a judge would treat me better.  They have not sued, to date.

I was thinking I would like to settle this matter, (CTI now has my file) but from what I have read, CTI is no better than Van Ru.  It is probably too late to deal directly with Dept of Ed.  I should have contacted them before they turned it over to CTI.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?
