- JAJ1-800 724-1107 Collection Agency. Professional website. They left several voice mails which seemed to be on the up and up so I called them back -- mind you this is something I hate doing. Spoke with Sam Hajj. Had a Chase credit card before my disability that was waaay overdue. They wanted to get it taken care of before it went too far into collections. He already had my credit report printed up and noted this was the only high amount on it, which it was, and that the others were really only small medical bills, which they are. He was able to get about 80% knocked off if I paid by the end of month. I have to admit, this was the nicest bill collectors I have ever talked to. Non forceful, non accusatory, listed options, gave ideas and understood the disability+economy is not a good combo. Actually wanted to know they story of why I fell behind in my payments. Be honest with him. He's worth talking to.
I do agree however, that there are those punks who think they can get away with misrepresenting themselves as a PI, etc. Those people I try not to talk to... It's 1k fine for them if taken to court when caught doing that... Invest in a voice recorder and give it to a lawyer if they pull that on you. Know the collection laws and your rights.
I'm sorry to say, but they do tracing. There are professional searches that actually list who you may know, who you are related to, areas where you have lived. From there, they can search a relative or friend and track you down using process of elimination. We can use the search tools on sites like MyLife, PeopleFinders, and Intelius as well for background checks, etc for about $10 a name or $40 a month. In ways it's good... in other ways I hate it. So, if your 5 year old has the same name of someone owing in the same tri state area chances are they might get a call since sometimes the birth dates get mixed up in the searches.
Also, their system calls you, and we all know these systems have glitches (it's like trying to speak your choices to those automated services when you have a bad head cold) ... so if it doesn't connect on their end when your voice mail picks up, there will be no message left.- Caller: Creditors Inter

- JAJ replies to SaraMake sure non of the school loans are through the school directly. It happened to me. Here I was calling Higher Ed and Sallie Mae trying to figure out what was going on with my FAFSA being held up and it turned out one of the universities held part of one. And mind you, the schools business offices don't bother calling you. If they can't get a response through mail, they send it off to a collector.
- JAJ replies to Donna HoggDonna, they most likely don't read these complaints. NEVER post your phone number on a public form. You have to call them or send them a certified letter stating your request. And believe me... you DO NOT want them to call your cell number if your minutes are precious.
- JAJ replies to Ada Freemanfile suit. No elder should need to go through that bs. Invest in a recorder and have someone monitor the calls. Also, if you can, call the phone company and block it - they may have the special feature for seniors. Also block Private/Unknown numbers since they will try to get to her that way as well. Some cordless phones even have this option under the Menu.
- JAJ replies to Faithawesome. When I first got my disability, I worked directly with the doctors and companies to pay things off. Had hospital bills in collections, etc - just took out the old statements and sent payment in. Collectors and billing departments will tell you that you can't do that... but you most definitely can. The only thing is, sometimes with credit cards the finance charges can be overwhelming. If you get a good collector, they will knock it all off and take a percentage off the balance. If approved, it could save you a lot. That is, only if you get a collector that has actually been in your shoes and cares... they are few and far between.
you might also want to think about blocking Private/Unknown callers... but it may effect international calls if you receive them.. - JAJ replies to fedupthumbs up. That has got to be the best response to them I've heard yet. I wish I could do that but I'm too dang honest and i would be the one laughing before I got the first sentence out.
- JAJ replies to Alpa Chinoawesome. Thank you so much for posting that. I hope the general public will learn what their rights are and get these guys by the kahunas. Decent collectors are few and far between... a lot are abusing the practices... almost like a Sheriff of Nottingham approach - Ha, the economy matches the era too.
- kirbylou2003| 2 repliesI got a call from this number this morning. I have a BOA card. Trying to pay it off. Should I call these people? I think I should receive something in writing before I agree on payment arangements

- JAJ replies to kirbylou2003| 1 replyyou should have gotten something in the mail that states they took over the account... sort of looks like junk mail at first. Honestly, I threw it away and then had to shift through the garbage after speaking to them. After I made the payment arrangement, I received another letter - the 3 sided perforated kind - that listed the payoff amount in full with the check #, date of check, name of the company owed, and the creditor info... along with what happens if said check bounces. Granted, if your paycheck is due to hit the bank a few days after your agreement check and if you have overdraft, use it since the amount you save on payoff could be worth the $35 charge. Make sure you can live off what is left until the next payday though. I'm actually finding it a bit difficult and had to hit the local pantry.... but it's only for the month and my credit's not as screwed.
- vvv replies to JAJyes pay what you can afford, not what they tell you to pay....
