Called me at work, regarding a debt with a visa card for a bank I'd never heard of.  She was polite enough throughout the conversation, even when I told her that she couldn't call me at work and to call me at my home number.

A woman called and asked for Troy McCoy. I have gotten several calls from this # requesting this person over the past several months. I normally don't answer and then delete the message they leave. I finally answered the call today and kindly asked her to take my phone # off their list as I was tired of receiving these calls. She was very polite and agreed to remove my phone #. We'll see..........

These are scumbag junk debt buyers who will stop at NOTHING to collect on time-barred debts. When they began harassing my BIL last year over a old debt which they had bought from Ford Motor Credit, I told him to stay OFF the phone, as the Statue of Limitations on this debt had expired 13 months before and they were attempting to reage it. He sent them a Cease Communications VIA certified mail, threatening to take them to court as well as report them to the FDCPA, our State's AG's office and the Federal Trade Commission if they attempted to contact him again. That was September of last year, and he hasn't heard from them since!

They've been calling and leaving messages on my answering machine for over a year.  Here is the text of what they leave on the machine:

"Please return my call at 1-800-860-0644 at your earliest convenience.  Again, the number is 1-800-860-0644.  This communication will be with a debt collector in an attempt to collect a debt.  Any information obtained will be used for that purpose."

They're going after somebody who had my telephone number 8 years ago.  What's really bogus is they don't even follow their own procedures, really this was just put out for a press release and stock purposes:

"If a collector is unable to establish contact with a consumer based on information received, the collector must undertake skip tracing procedures to develop important account information. Skip tracing is the process of developing new phone, address, job or asset information on a consumer, or verifying the accuracy of such information. Each collector does his or her own skip tracing using a number of computer applications available at his or her workstation, as well as a series of automated skip tracing procedures implemented by the Company on a regular basis."

They don't do any of this.  They just call people for months on end, even though they are calling the wrong number.  Terrible company!

Frequently they call me. They are calling over a debt I settled through my Mortgage company abuot 7 years ago. THEY ARE FRAUDULENTLY trying to intimidate me into "RE-PAYING" them. They continued to call me, so I actually went into my sotrage, loacted the PROOF I have already paid it - AND I faxed it to them as they requested. Today (3 weeks has gone by) - they call me AGAIN (for the second time after I told them "DO NOT CALL ME") They TRIED to tell me that the original debt was larger...... "Well, yes, it was - but the mortgage company OFFERED me THAT settlement!!! You cannot CALL me years later to say "I changed my mind - I'm a collector and you now - should pay us the WHOLE amount!!!"

Yeah, well, as long as I have this document saying "Settled" these people can go F---k themselves......... Folks, I suggest you look into what they are "claiming" you owe..... In certain states, the is a statue of limitations of about 7 years........ I suspect these people prey on others by digging into archives and threatening people with bad credit if they do not "repay" the debts (again)......... Don't let their threatening "I'm the supervisor talk" get to you. It's just that - Big talk - NO ACTION/S. Be sure to report them to the BBB and Consumer Protection Agency as soon as possible. "Did you know that if you tell a company DIRECTLY in writing - whether it is via emial OR letter - they will be FINED by the Consumer Protection Agency if they attempt to contact you again???? Just something good to know. Also, if you live in the state of Arizona, it is PERFECTLY LEGAL to record phone conversations....... Keep that in mind next time a collector is bothering you.

    Thank You

I have rec'd a number of no ID / no message calls from this number. PORTFOLIO RECOVERY seems to be violating several laws in their calling practices. Look-up section 805 and 806, among others, in the THE FAIR DEBT COLLECTION PRACTICES ACT at http://www.ftc.gov/os/statutes/fdcpa/fdcpact.htm. They call before 9am or after 8pm local, call and just let phone ring without message or ID, etc. In my case I have no known debt and will not respond until they send something in writing to my known (8yr) address of record. Good Luck.

They called me at my parents house, where I haven't lived in 20 years. I called back their number, and the person I spoke to said it was in reference to a credit card that I don't recall ever having. When I asked when it was I had the card, I was told from 1989-1994. I have a hard enough time remembering stuff from last year, let alone 13 years ago. I hung up and discussed it with my wife, then called them back. I said sorry, but something must be wrong as it is not my problem. The lady on the phone said, "Surely you remember it, your last payment was in Oct 1994 for the amount of $12,000.00!" I told her sorry,, but at that time I didn't have 2 nickels to rub together, let alone 12 grand. I then told them to send copies of all the info they have, I would check it out, and get back with them. I was told they would show it in "dispute" and do just that. All I got in the mail was a letter with a bunch of lines for me to fill in about where and when this happened and they wanted all my personal info. If I didn't have the common sense, as some people don't, I would have sent them everything. So, bottom line...watch out for scammers! They could use the info to set themselves up as you!!

I received a call from a gentleman today wanting to speak with a Mr or Mrs. _____ I explained I was their daughter and asked how I could help. He said he needed to speak directly to one of them. I explained my parents are deceased. He asked if I take care of their business, I told him I or my brother does. He asked if we have power of attny. I said yes, my brother does. He wanted me to fax the information to him. I asked him what this was in regards to, he wouldnt tell me the name of the company or anything. I told him I was not faxing anything to someone in regards to business I know nothing about. He said nevermind or something to that effect and hung up. My mother, who passed last year, doesnt have any outstanding debts, and my father, who passed away 9-10 years ago doesnt either. It may be for something regarding my brother, he and my nephew share my fathers name, but the caller was very abrupt and not forthcoming with information. It's very "fishy". Any legitmate business would have given the company name, at the very least. There was no caller id business name only "toll free call" and the number was 8007721413.

Check out Bud Hibb's report on Portfolio Recovery and how to deal with them:

    http://www.budhibbs.com/debtcollectorpages/portfolio_recovery_associates.htm

Also, since they're harassing you for a debt that's not yours, you may want to consider sending them a certified letter putting them on notice that they are to cease all communications; and that if they don't, you'll report them to the Federal Trade Commission and pursue civil and criminal sanctions.

Once you inform them to cease contacting you, federal law requires them to comply with your request.  Good luck!

This zombie debt company is after me for a debt that is so old, they can no longer sue me for it (it is past the statute of limitations in every single state). When I asked them to verify the debt, I received a letter signed by someone named Connie Washington, Administrative Manager.

I looked in the White Pages for a Connie Washington in Norfolk, VA and found 2 entries: (757) 622-0871 and (757) 962-0761. I have no proof that either of these numbers belongs to Connie Washington from Portfolio Recovery Associates, but if anyone wants to verify it please feel free. I would love to call this C&NT at home every single day for the rest of her life.

    Angry Ex-Spouse
Called looking for my ex-wife husband on a private "financial" matter. When I asked why I was called since I was divorced almost 15 years ago, they informed me that apparently he gave them my telephone number as a contact number.

Laughable when you think about it. The very guy that snuck around with my then wife while I was at work would actually refer his debt collectors to me! Isn't that just slendid!

Portfolio Recovery Associates has been calling my number for over a year. They want the person who used to have my telephone number over 7 years ago. The guy must be dead as the only thing they have is a very old telephone number which I have now. The company lies in their press releases:

"If a collector is unable to establish contact with a consumer based on information received, the collector must undertake skip tracing procedures to develop important account information. Skip tracing is the process of developing new phone, address, job or asset information on a consumer, or verifying the accuracy of such information. Each collector does his or her own skip tracing using a number of computer applications available at his or her workstation, as well as a series of automated skip tracing procedures implemented by the Company on a regular basis."

In practice they just call whatever info they've been handed from all the other debt collectors who gave up trying to find the person.  If they could collect on the debt they would sue, which they do regularly.  But they know they can't because the statutory limit is 4 years here.  So they just call and call a wrong number, it's happening all across the country, people who get a new telephone number receive these crank calls from debt collection agencies, looking for somebody long since departed from this planet.
