- PKT| 1 reply*** Please do not call the number they provided, and do not give out any information. Think about it. If you call the number THEY provided, would they come straight out and say they are trying to scam you! The person on the other end is going to try convince you they are a legit IRS representative.
I also received a similar letter, and admit at a quick glance it did look official, they even had my husband's Social Security number, but upon a more careful read, you can tell it's amateur hour all the way. They wanted copies of our amended tax return documents for 2010 because they had lost their copy. We never amended our taxes for that year, so why would they have any record of an amended tax return in the first place. They claim it's perhaps due to us sending in our returns in by snail mail as well as electronically. Who sends their taxes in 2 times! Then they tell us they needed the documents back by March 21, 2013 in order to process the return properly. Mind you I received the letter today 3/04/14 a full year after the requested time they needed all the paperwork in. We already received our money back from the real IRS for the year in question. Please, Please be careful, this is a scam. They prey on your fears. I see some of you are worried, but don't let them use this to scare you into giving them information that they should never have. I wouldn't be surprise if the scamers are monitoring sites like this... I've seen some people in this blog claiming the 800 829-0922 number is a real IRS number. I've looked up the number and it's some sort of telemarketing number. Err on the side of caution and call the IRS directly. If anything alert them of what's happening and give them what information you have.. - Tamianth replies to PKTYou need to report this fraud here:

http://www.irs.gov/uac/Common-Error-Reject-Co ... ested-Solutions - GeorgeToday is March 28, 2014 and I just got off the phone with the "real IRS". The notice I received stating an unusually large refund amount actually came from them but I received it because of what was filed on my 2013 tax return. The problem is that I have not filed my 2013 tax retrun yet!! I am working with them to get the scammer. The 800-829-0922 number is on the letter I received but I it is my understanding that it is bogus. I was given a laundry list of instructions to begin this proces and I won't be able to submit an electronic return this year.
- Gary ManningI received a letter from IRS stating I owe $12,000 plus. for tax year 2011 I have not worked since 2009 due to cancer. I believe this is a scam.
- Caller: xx
- Angela replies to scottI dont know if this is the irs. I got two different letters saying own money. Never the same amount.
- LeeLee| 2 repliesWell I don't know anything about the letters you all received,, But I don't think a scammer would forge a letter with the real Irs phone number on it.. Wouldn't they give you a number of their own. 1800 829 0922 is the Irs individual account department phone number. I don't know exatly where their located.. Btw this is where I found out my refund was on hold.. Still waiting...
- Caller: IRS
- Tax payer ... :( replies to scottIt is the IRS. You can satisfy yourself by asking them ... the agent on the phone ... to send you copies of the tax return in question and ask them to suspend action on placing a tax lean on property for 45 days.
- Victim| 1 replyThey stole from me $2900. Terible Scam.

- Hesitant| 1 replyI was hesitant at first but looking into it the number is clearly found on legitimate IRS forms found on IRS.gov. Specifically form 433-D installment agreement if you want to see for yourself. Yes potential scams are scary but it is legitimate IRS and ignoring them is more harmful. You can always call an IRS office and they can confirm but its a lot easier and less embarassing to simply look on IRS forms.
- Chris B.I recently received a letter with this number saying I owed money and this was the 2nd attempt to reach me. I called it once and almost an hour later was disconnected.. Called them 3 days later and after an hour finally answered and they said they would get me to another department and 20 mins later was disconnected. I was calling back but the wait time was enormous. If they do not want to talk to me then I will wait for them to take it out of my refund, if I actually owe. Thankfully all I have was my name.
- Fraud Alert replies to HesitantAnother fraud artist here repeating lies and garbage. The fraud artist claims here that this is a legitimate IRS number who called him, along with a ridiculous explanation. Cretin, you are mentally ill, and your idiocy fools nobody.
- Neda Zerajic| 1 replyI am getting call from some officer John white from IRS dep (1-210-418-4563) and he states that there is a warrant arrest at my physical address if I don't pay 1,796 dollars to IRS and that IRS officers are going to show up at my door to collect money. When I said that I don't feel comfortable discuss this over the phone and that I am going to call IRS myself he gave me toll fre IRS number and that nber is 1-800-829-0922
- Fed Up Again replies to nikki| 1 replyIt is a scam. Always cll your local IRS office and make an appointment to talk to someone in person. The IRS NEVER does business this way. Sorry you just lost $1800. Next time, check it out first. They count on us being stupid. It's how they make thwei living.
- Fed Up again replies to IoannDon't give them a damn dime. CALL your local IRS office and make an appointment to talk to someone.
- Fed Up Again replies to LeeLeeGo to the IRS web site and click on TIGTA. A list scam warnings is on there and his letter is on there too. It's a scam.
- Fed Up Again replies to VictimSorry, but next rime check it out BEFORE you send money.
- Fed Up Again replies to Neda ZerajicOH Brother@ So are you in jail? No? It's a scam. A;so beware of letters saying they are holding a refund for you. They are also just a scam.
- GianaIt's a scam or a phishing attempt. I received one of these notices in the mail today. The address didn't even list my house number. Just the street name and not whether it was ave, st, rd, or ln. The city wasn't even correct. The irs would know that for starters. Plus the amount of money they're asking for isn't any amount I've ever owed anywhere for any reason. There was a fake certified receipt on the envelope to make it look even more "official" but it was just left in my mailbox. The post office didn't ask for a signature like they would have with a real one. I'm thinking it's some kind of bottom feeder using just enough irs information to scare people into just blindly paying without looking into the issue.
