I agree with the backlog scenario.   I received the same letter.  At first I was up in arms, however, I also filed my taxes on time with form 8962, so I have resolved not to worry about it as well.

I agree with the backlog premise.  The letter #5591  (7-2015)  reflects a real IRS address and phone number.  It does not request payment of any type.  And since I had already filed with form 8962 and on time, I was not worried.

Had the letter demandef paymemt of se sort, I would have taken it and my records to a local IRS office.  And if I get any further correspondence, that's what I will do.

I received mail with this number on it and wanted to check if it was a legit number.

If you are concerned if this number is legit put the number in the search bar of http://www.irs.gov and look at the results.

This bozo called my mother and read down a list of possible infractions till she said she had sent money over seas without reporting it.  It was well under the amount that requires reporting and it was sent to my sister who was a minor at the time so the IRS does not require you do do anything.
This guy said she owed $4,987.62 and it needed to be paid that day or they would take away her credit cards, drivers license passport etc for the next 5 years.  He then told her that checks and transfers wouldn't be fast enough and that he would need cash.  He also instructed her not to tell the people at the bank what the cash was for and that he would stay on the phone with her and walk her through the process. At this point even my gullible mother just hung up the phone and called me who then called the police.

The number then called back about 15 times along with three calls from 911 so even if the number is legitimate it doesn't mean that a call from that number will be

This 800notes website is a lifesaver, many times over.  1-800-829-0922 is legit IRS, and also is shown at irs.gov.  For those of you recently receiving a CP22A (taxes due plus interest to the gov’t), because of the erroneous original figures given to those of you on Obamacare early in 2015 for the 2014 return, listen up.  I filed taxes early, before any notification that corrected Obamacare figures were to be sent to me to use in tax computation.  The incorrect Obamacare figures showed I had a refund coming because of that. After the Obamacare goofup was discovered, it rendered my 1040A  incorrect and I had to file a corrected 1040X Amended Return, plus attachments. I then owed a couple bucks, which I paid on time. I today was on the phone including wait time for almost 2 hours at that phone #.  The summary is that this CP22A shows I owe a couple bucks more, PLUS INTEREST, in spite of Obamacare making the original error early this year.  I was told by an IRS agent, that the CP22’s were sent out prematurely, and to ignore it.  If you feel confident in “ignoring” an IRS notice that says you will owe more interest AND penalties if you don’t pay…. well it’s up to you.  I have a hunch this is going to hit the TV networks soon, mostly due to charging interest on an error that Obamacare caused.

Um....nothing about this sounds like it's not legit. Fresno is where they have the west coast corporate office and there is both a p.o. box and there is a street address. Probably several. Now, the IRS does run into computer updating errors and it is best to call because they are only human and will make accounting mistakes. But scam? No.

Don't be stupid!!  All these criminals from this outfit are posting here saying it is legit.  I drove to a local IRS office and confirmed this is a hoax akin to identity theft.
Please do not transfer any money.  These losers will pray on your fear.  They are serious criminals.  Ignore those posts stating the number is legit.

It definitely IS the IRS. It's their information line for setting yup payment plans if you owe them money, or to let them know you won't be paying them due to i.e. Waiting for disability, unemployment, etc

I also got a call from officer Baker stating he was calling from the IRS and stated that I would be arrested or pay 90,000 dollars in past taxes. Then after I brought up my lawyer he hung up the phone and called me back 10 min later from a different phone.

He had a pretty convincing prerecorded VM but he kept telling me that they could unlawfully arrest me which had me laughing a little bit

When i called the 800-829-0922 number, there were over six recorded telemarker sales offerings on the IRS phone line!!! I called the number multiple times and it's the same number on my IRS notice - very odd and suspicious. I'm going to call their main 829-1040 number.

I received the same kind of letter that said IRS and that I owe money for 2014. The number they had as to contact them, I called waited for about 20 min finally a woman came on the phone she did not introduce herself she proceded to tell me about a debit card and charges against me. I had someone else to call that number and they had to hold for about  15 min. and she got a man. she gave the phone to me and he ask me my whole name which I told him and then he wanted me sss number which i didn't give him and i gave the phone back to my lawyer. she ask him for a id and he didn't know what she was talking about . I am still worried and wondering if it is a scam. the accountant said it was legit but still don't know.

So, you were NOT called, but you decided to search a call complaints site for the number, AFTER you supposedly checked the IRS website to prove the number was legitimate?

    Hmmmm.

    Lurkers:
ANY phone number can be spoofed!
When in doubt, contact your local IRS office!

I understand what you are trying to say. But more there are people that HAVE received phone calls from bogus operation that use caller id spoofing in order to display legitimate IRS numbers. Like Slim, I believe that people should call their local office or one listed on the official IRS site.
