I’m an Enrolled Agent with the IRS (Inactive). IRS does not initiate contacts by phone.  US mail only.   IRS does not file lawsuits.  IRS has enough administrative authority under the IRS Code and related regulations to collect all taxes lawfully due the federal government.     Court action, if any is handled by the DOJ and all parties are entitled to legal assistance if it is a criminal matter.  But--tax disputes are for the most part civil matters.  90% of all IRS tax disputes are settled administratively.  IRS has absolutely no authority to call on local law enforcement for anything. Local law is never involved in IRS tax disputes. IRS does not threaten to involve local law enforcement or to arrest you for nonpayment of federal taxes.  IRS has no powers of arrest as related to ordinary tax disputes.  Having a deficiency in taxes owed by way of audit is NOT a crime.  IRS does not cold call anyone and demand immediate payment of  money.  IRS does not ask for financial information over the phone.   IRS does not accept Green card money paks or Itunes cards or similar for payment in any case.  No one is prosecuted for ordinary tax disputes. IRS has absolutely no authority over anyone's professional license. Professional licensing is handled by state governments.  Yes, levies on property to satisfy an existing tax obligation do occur, but only after a very long period of negotiation. And yes, liens are placed on individuals but  usually after a lot of negotiation and a failure to reach a settlement.   All determinations of tax liability are subject to appeals.  All  contacts by the IRS are initiated by US mail.

    Everyone please note:

Effective in April of 2017, the IRS will start using private debt collectors who may, in fact contact you.

I received a letter last year tell me I owe $7000.00.  for 2016. I did not call the number on the letter.  My sister in law is an IRS field supervisor so I called a different number at the IRS and was told they have no record of me owing anything. . Yesterday My husband received a letter telling him he owes $6500.00. The IRS does our taxes on the regular via my in law. This letter is going to her today. Something is not right.

That post was made 8 years ago so most likely the page was taken down and replaced.  I see that CWG40 has provided links to the FTC web page and the TIGA web page.

Not a phone call, but a very realistic looking letter with this number attached. There were a few things that just didn't seem right. For one, the IRS USED to put your full SSN on letters they sent, but no longer do. The math for their "mistake" put the interest at 400% which is BS. The automated voice for the number doesn't match the official IRS voice and sounds a bit sketchy. Checking against online statements the amount owed was for the previous month. Most likely they were intending to steal it out of the mailbox and attempt to cash it. I also recently had a tax payment stolen where they attempted to cash the check. So be safe and watch out for this scam.

    Real IRS Number
800-829-0922 is a real IRS number, BUT you will never get a call from this number. It is for incoming calls only.
Everyone should know that the IRS will never call you. They always send a letter. And, yes, you will wait up to 2 hours for the call to be answered.
If you get a call FROM this number, you can be sure that the number has been spoofed. Ignore it.

Why are you asking someone who posted over 11 years ago to check your tax refund? Even if he posted 11 minutes ago, how would he do that?

Sent me post mail last May 2019 stating i owe $550 for my tax return in 2017 because i hadn’t submit for tax my only 2 times work in January 2017 as i resigned from that agency and moved to different agency. My W2 for the agency i resigned came so late. I didn’t bother reporting it cuz only worked twice that year. I only got $750 Tax refund year 2017. So i wonder why, if i owed $550 then would have been $200 my tax return only?! They said if i don’t pay by June that interest will incur. I received another mail again in July stating i owed $750 because of the penalties. I still did not pay as it really bothered me. I went online and created an account online and then it was saying — i owe ZERO dollars. I knew it’s a scam as i received same style of mail before from emergency visit saying i owed $1800 for my sons ED visit, only 10-mins seen by doctor due to flu. I was shocked cuz i paid $300 outfront in ED and my son has insurance. Same thing mail kept coming, threatening me that will go to collection and that will hurt credit score. When my son was born i received two billing statement one from the hospital where i gave birth and the other was from a Physician name and from a medical group. I went to Hospital patient portal created account and made my payments there. The scammer kept on sending me mail and went to “collection agency” calling me all the time leaving me voice message. First i answered and was so mad when tried to ask for my SSN, address, bday... etc. i was so mad and cursed them and said i will report them cuz they are scammers. I told personnel on the other end that i googled the doctor which appeared to be in different far state and the medical group does not exist. I told them i am paying it on my patient portal. Then i hung up! Back to IRS, i received mail again around September 2019 stating i owed them $900 because of added penalties. I did not reply. November came and mail again stating they lower it to $450 if i will pay by December 1. And other thing the return address only shows Austin, TX 77301-0030. Take note, no street and bldg number! OMG !!! These are SCAMMERS!!! If you want to be sure, go straight create IRS account online. Those scammers steal our information online. We are in cyber world and there’s a whole lot of cyber thieves, scammers, and even exist in dating websites !!! SO BEWARE!
