I too got a caLL WITH A CLAIM NUMBER AND TOLL FREE NUMBER ABOVE and the person's ID number  wanted to verify whole name as it appears on my last filed tax return, agreed but warned I would not give ssn or date of birth and guy gave me to 800 number to call.  I called it, automated message said to enter ssn or fedweral id number and I hung up, luckily I never gave him my name either.  I will call the local IRS number to see about all this.   So glad I googled that 800 number..  will advise back after I talk to local office.  Oh, Personal also warned me that cell phones are not private and did I want to continue conversation I said yes but became suspicious..

This is the IRS. They have your cell number (or whichever number you provided when doing your tax return). Don't ignore them!

Just want to let everyone know I thought it was a scam too but I called the regular IRS phone number and they verified this is a REAL IRS LINE!!!  So just so you know you definently should call this number back if they call!!  Lucky for us it was a mistake and they had our phone number on someone elses collection account!  Whew.

I did call the number even though I was suspicious. After reading these messages I get the feeling that I was scammed. They had my very old home number and I took that as  their records are not being uptodate. It was 5 plus years old number. Now I am praying. Any solution or suggestion please.

Had a message on my machine from this number.  I smell BS because as others have said:

    1)  The IRS contacts via mail
    2)  The "must call tonight" pressure thing
    3)  Immediate request to enter SSN upon calling the number.

    I think I'll sit tight.

Yes the number they tell you to call 800-829-7650 belongs to the IRS but that does not mean it was the IRS who called.  What better way to get you to believe it was the IRS that to leave a real IRS number that you can google.  They leave a message at 7:00pm to call by end of business which they know most people will NOT be able to do.  Then they call the next day and if you answer they ask for your SSN.  By this time there are a percentage of people that really believe it was the IRS after cross checking the number and they hand out what ever info they ask for .  Better to wait for the mail as the IRS will always mail you if you owe.  A friend sold some stock for 750K and received a letter from the irs within a few days telling him what his tax liability was, but they never called.  I have had the IRS send me Levy's not to pay vendors and that also was always by mail. I doubt they would ever call you.  I received my call at my work phone and the IRS has no knowledge of that number.  But the guy that worked at this number before me left this world owing a lot of debt as I get bill collectors calling fro him all the time.  I tell them the guy is dead but that does not stop them from calling...

Some automated caller left message on my phone with this number; 1-800-829-7650 stating they are the IRS.   i've called this number a few times today and have yet to get a person to speak with , only the recording telling me to hold for a representative .
Since the recording demands that I contact someone from this number before the end of the day, i'm still on hold, 17 plus minutes and still no person comes on the line.
I don't owe the IRS money and more than likely they called me wrongly but still I'm trying to solve this issue.  First place, the IRS should write me, i've got an address on my tax papers and they should not phone people and harass them.  Second place, the IRS should have more efficient operators so that we don't waste our entire day trying to return their call !  I'm still on hold and waiting as I write this WHINE

BTW when I reached this IRS recording, they wanted my social security number punched into the phone, I refused to put that towards them.   I don't believe it is the IRS.
BEWARE of this scam !   1-800-829-7650

Oh for god's sake....you psychotic people calling anything a scam.

All you have to do is google this number (and you see links to the irs.gov site that have it on the first page of the search.)

Here is one example.   Just scroll to the bottom:

Also, the explanation by Bo Diamond above doesn't apply here, because the message left on my phone included my ongoing case # that was given to me months ago by the IRS (regarding money that I still haven't paid them)     I sincerely doubt that any scam artists would have access to that information.

And yes, the call was strangely late (at 8 PM), just like the others have reported here.   But in this case, that didn't make it illegitimate.

If anyone has any doubts, just call one of the numbers from your mailed notices or from the IRS site.

I received this call at 12:45 pm on May 11, 2010; automated message telling me to call 1-800-829-7650 by end of business day and reference case # **********. I searched here and on the IRS website while on hold with the #. This IS in fact the IRS.
When I dialled the # it asked for my SSN right off to which I did nothing. Upon repeating the request, I again did nothing. I was put through anyway. After a 12+ minute hold I spoke with a man who identified himself as "Mr. Griggs, badge # 0923106" and asked me for my SSN. I instead told him I was to reference Case # ********** which he gladly accepted. He then asked for my name, which I hesitantly gave. He then advised me that this call was not intended for me or anyone in my household with same last name. Although he could not give me ANY info about who he was seeking (understandably), he did assure me that *I* did not have a problem & proceeded to delete MY phone # from the Account Holder he was seeking assuring me I would not receive any further calls about this issue.
    So, um...not a scam.

Just as a side note: I have had my phone for seven years. I bought a house just over a year ago. Somehow, I've gotten Collections Calls for the previous occupants of this house at MY ph#. I assume a quick Reverse Address Search gave them MY # thinking it was this other family and I assume this is the case with the IRS call, too.

I received a message from an "Out of area" phone requesting I call 1-800-829-7650. I did check and found it to be a legitimate IRS number for the Federal Payment Levy Program. Although the number I was told to call is the IRS, I can't vouch for the validity of the call requesting me to call that number. Like others, I called the number and after declining to enter my SS#, eventually reached a person who identified herself by name and ID number. I also refused to give her my SS# and since I did not receive a case number, she was unable to tell me why they would be calling.

She also confirmed that the IRS would have attempted to notify me by mail if there was any collection action against me before they would call. Since I owe no taxes and received no notice, she said I shouldn't worry about it. However, if I was still concerned, she did recommend I contact my local IRS office in person to see if there was any valid reason for the call. She correctly identified the office.

Lets see.  I get a call an hour to 8, I need to urgently call BEFORE  8?  I owe zero taxes, my credit is pristine, and the IRS hasn't mailed me ANYTHING?

Oh yeah, this is totally, totally legit.

I won't be calling that number,  I will however be calling the police to report the scam.

The number may be legit, but they know you won't call it by the end of the day, so they'll call again the next day hoping to scam you.
