This is the IRS - check on the internet.  In my case, they were looking for someone with a name similar, but not identical, to my wife's name.  Recognizing the error, they took our telephone number off the case so we shouldn't get called again.

THIS NUMBER IS A SCAM. DO NOT CALL IT BACK AND DO NOT GIVE ANYONE INFORMATION OVER THE PHONE. I'VE BEEN AUDITED SEVERAL TIMES AND WAS NEVER, EVER CALLED BY THE IRS. THEY ALWAYS MAIL EVERYTHING SO IT IS IN WRITING.

ISN'T IT COOL THE WAY THE SCAMMERS ADD TO THIS WEBSITE BY SAYING IT IS REAL??

    You posting idiots
For all you morons saying it's a scam.... It's definitely the IRS. I got a letter from the IRS telling me gale much I owes them and the number was definitely on the paper with my balance. Granted they probably shouldn't start the cal asking for your social seeing they have it but that's another issue.

Just received this message at my home #, but haven't called back the 800 number given in the message.  Neither I nor my husband have any outstanding IRS debts or tax issues, but I do think it might be a possibility this is legit.  We have only had this number a few months, and have received numerous debt collection calls for someone else in that time.  Perhaps she also owes the IRS?  If we call (at which time we definitely won't be giving out any information) I will update with the outcome.

I have caller ID and I would think this would come up on the phone as a Goverment or state Number, it didn't it came up unknown name, unknown number, they called at 7:30 and said I needed to call before 8:00pm. I never called but I have a friend who works for the IRS and I will be seeing her this weekend and I will give her this number and reference number to check it out.

After a restless night, I was about to contact my tax accountant, but, being leery of the whole thing, first I Googled the phone number.  Sure enough; my suspicions were substantiated!

Thanks to all of you who took the time and wrote before me.  We need to put these scammers out of business, and, most important, shield our identities from these unscrupulous people.

there's "NO SUCH NUMBER" from IRS contact us webpage!!

read and watch those number closely, they've come pretty close, BUT there's no such numbers.

go to IRS website yourself, it only take less than a second; see it with your own eyes.

I received a call on July 16th. 2010 at approx. 3 p.m. the male caller identified himself as being from the IRS. He did not give his name, ID number or give me a case number. When I did not volunteer any information he gave me the 800-829-7650 number. Upon calling the number, which is a valid collection number, I spoke with another male and he gave me his name and ID number.  After telling him about the previous call, he stated that if the IRS needed to contact me it would be done by the US Postal Service.

Watch out for these types of calls!!!!

This is a legitimate number.  The IRS has an automated skip-trace going at the moment.  The name was similar to mine so they must have found the phone number through google or something.  It takes about an hour (including hold time) to get it straightened out, but you must do this.
This is their collections department and they will continue to call you until you prove that you are not the person they are looking for.

Received call/phone message from "unknown" number on caller ID and stating they were the IRS and requesting that I call (800)829-7650 before they close today.  Well, I called the number and they asked for Social Security or Tax ID number.  Having some experience in my lifetime, I am not going to give private information to a call back information.  Wanted to pass information along so someone does not fall for this fool's trap.  The IRS has in the past sent us letters via US mail and I have never received a phone call from the IRS requesting I call back the same day before closing.  What if I were traveling out of town this week on business?  Bogus number, and I plan to file complaint with the BBB.com website.

I called this number back after seeing it on the IRS.gov website. I didn't enter my SSN when prompted (twice), then a woman came on and asked if the I was calling for myself or someone else. I said I don't have any information but the 800 number. She asked for the case number, which I gave her. She asked my name and the phone number that the message was left on, which I gave her. She asked if anyone but me uses that number. I said no, and she said it looks like it wasn't me they were trying to reach, and I can disregard the message. I hope that's the end of it, and all I disclosed was my name and phone number which is publicly available anyway.

I received a call from this number indicating that it was the IRS and left a case number. I didn't call back but visited the IRS local office instead. I was told that the IRS would have contacted me via mail if there was a problem with my taxes. They also said that the IRS calls people with like names who owe taxes in an attempt to collect unpaid taxes (like collection agencies).  My advice, if you receive a call, visit the local IRS office to verify what is happening.

All of you guys are stupid to think that this is a scam!! Any collection agency or a government entity that tries to collect money WILL CALL YOU, MAIL YOU and FREEZE your bank account WITHOUT NOTIFYING YOU, because you all are too quick to think that this is a scam...

This is a legitimite contact number for IRS that they write down on their Levies, Bills and so on.. The IRS will NOT ALWAYS send you something in the mail, if they have done a backround check on you - they will contact you VIA TELEPHONE! When they leave messeges on your voicemail with NO INFO, thats because BY LAW, they are not allowed to leave DETAILED MESSEGES on what it is for, who it is for, and what is going to happen. Have you ever had a messege left from collections agency? it will say "Hello, this is such and such, calling from such and such regarding an important matter, please call such and such #". For all of you [***] out there - when you call the IRS or even when you call your BANK the first thing they ask for is your AACCOUNT #, so why wouldnt IRS ask you for your SS# since that is the only info they HAVE to IDENTIFY who you are, b/c you could have moved, changed your phone number and so on.

So please, do yourself a favor and use your common sense - when you are calling to IRS about federal taxes, EXPECT to give your social, when you call YOUR BANK because your account was frozen due to IRS levy - EXPECT to have your ACCOUNT #... Please and thank you, have a good day!

    confused in orlando
I too recieved this call last night after 8 pm and am very confused as I am not sure how the IRS called me at this number as it was not the phone number I had when I last filed my income tax as I had since moved.  I will call the number today although I will not give them my social security number, they should have that, and I called our local action news center to ask them to investigate this as with all these posts it sounds suspicious.
