- popOn a IRS form 668 A (c) " notice of levy" the telephone number of IRS office is TOLL FREE 1-800-829-7650. It is a legitimate toll free ingoing line for patron taxpayers to respond to. Whether they use it on outbound call bank to try and get returned calls I can not say, but i you initiate the call it IS going into a legitimate IRS govt switchboard. If someone has "hijacked" or "spoofed" the number to call you and appear legit is another matter for smarter guys than me. Calls FROM that number should be treated as suspect until further notice .

- Sarah replies to JeffThis is exactly right. Just went through the same process but called the main IRS number to verify. 1-800-829-1040.
If you receive a call do not give out any info, instead call the IRS directly. - Rick LerouxI recieved a phone message from this number. I was suspicious so I looked up the IRS numbers. I found this number on the IRS website. Thinking this is a legit number I called back and entered my SS#. I was on hold for 30 min. So I hung up. I thought about it and it just didn't feel right so I called the State Attonery Gen. Office. She said that it is possible that someone has hacked the SS collections phone number as this phone activity did not fit the Social Security's phone policy. I have not been able to talk to anyone from Social Security after hours of trying. I just can't get a live person on the phone. So how can we find out if this is legit? I have never received any kind of written notice of a problem with my tax's nor has my tax person.
- keitha| 1 replyYes I received this call and from this number 800-829-7650 and I thought it was legit. I would to know if it is because I gave information that the IRS should have already if this is a scam I will have anyone trying to steal my identity they will go to jail

- Tamianth replies to keithaMany legitimate numbers including the IRS are being spoofed! Never ever give anyone you info, if they can't tell you what it is, its a scam!
Right now there are many scams/fraud & extortion rackets going on! If I where you, I'd check my credit reports and put alerts on them, also contact banks or CC company's if you gave any of that information or gave them money and put a complaint of fraud in. They can change your account numbers for you!

http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0258-fake-debt-collectors - Also Suspicious| 1 replyI've had my new cell number for a month and received this call today. So the number I would have given the IRS at the time I filed my taxes isn't this number. IRS doesn't call you and say you must call back immediately either. Even if you have a valid debt you should always get it in writing. The IRS doesn't operate this way.

- ANTHONYIf you call the number and wait on hold for an extended amount of time you will find it is indeed the IRS ACS Support. However, the number is ONLY legit If YOU make the call; where a possible SCAM exists is if some one spoofs the number making you think the IRS is calling you. So the answer is quite simple: if some one calls you do not give your information; if you call the number yourself then it is perfectly safe.
- Call type: Debt collector
- Sherry replies to Also SuspiciousI reported this number to the IRS and filed a complaint on the Do Not Call Registry. They had been calling daily and have since stopped. It appears to be a scam.
- Not a scam| 1 replyOkay, I received the same call from a number out of New York 716-206-3218. The voice mail said to contact the IRS at 800-829-7650 and gave me a reference number. I was very skeptical and goggled, goggled and goggled some more. After learning that the number 800-829-7650 was indeed an IRS telephone number, I decided to call but be very cautious in what information that I provided. After waiting on hold, a representative answered the phone, giving his name and ID number. The first question he asked was for my SS#. I politely told him that I was not comfortable in providing him that information over the telephone. He responded by telling me that he would not be able to help me. I asked him if I could provide him the reference number and he stated "yes that will work". I provided him with the reference number left on my voice mail and he accessed the account. He asked me if I new _______ and _______. I told him that I did not know these people and he advised that my telephone number was left as possible contact number for them. He told me that he would remove my telephone number from their account and make note that it was a wrong number.
Conclusion: It is my personal opinion that this is not a scam. I was very leery of it, especially after reading all of these posts. My suggestion would be to contact the telephone number but do not provide them with any personal information. It may be about you but may also just be a wrong number.- Caller: IRS
- Not Easily Fooled replies to RonYou're right. That's what tipped me off too. Why would the IRS call my cell? Also, why did they never ask for my husband who is Head of the Household? Now they are calling my work number. I am beyond pissed I want this guy. Found out the other number they are calling m e from has a Nevada Cell. Let me tell you, if I track them down, they are in for it!
- jxleomongot a call on my cell, voice message. called back-never heard 'on-hold' music like that from the IRS. Gave me an account # too. Trouble is, this is a pre-paid phone, never used to contact IRS or other agency. Never gave out # to any one.
get plenty of other weird calls also. Maybe the # is circulated around by conners!- Caller: 'IRS', supposedly
- Call type: Debt collector
- gujiThey call from India. You can tell by their accent. When I asked him for his employee or badge #,he hanged up.
- JBI was receiving calls from 716-206-3218 and was told to call 800-829-7650. Never did any of that thinking it was scam. The 800 is valid IRS. Pertaining to Levy. I never received any mail from IRS. Recently my bank accounts were levied by the IRS. I never received any info from them except the recent calls. I went down to meet 1-on-1 with them and they said issue with my taxes. On the levy was a different address. Same name, same SSN, different address. I was victom of my Identity Theft, so all mail from the IRS was going to a different address. Take this number and these calls very seriously. Go down and meet with them if for nothing more than verifying your profile.

They want your information to steel your money - Yep It's Real| 3 repliesDefinitely real. I was a little skeptical calling because it asked for my SSN#, but I was able to speak to an actual IS agent that knew my tax information.
I encourage you to call, especially if you owe back taxes or owe on anything such as student loans that may be in default. You may be at risk for a levy or garnishment. - TSTEXGIRL replies to Yep It's Real| 2 repliesUmm I do not think so. IRS do not I repeat DO NOT call you about your tax info. The number which is posted on irs.gov is not the one you posted and it is only for people to call an automatic system to check their refund updates. I never in all my years actual got a call from an IRS agent for any thing and besides they mail you if you owe money. <theory failed try again later>
- BettyThis is NOT the IRS. Yes, the IRS asks for this information BUT not before identifing themself and giving there id number.
The IRS will NOT contact you by phone and certainly not through an automated message. This is FRAUD - BettyI called the IRS and they said it was a scam. Do not give out any information. Told me where to report it. Reviewed my record and told me it was clean. Don't be fooled.
