- Caller: IRS
- Wary replies to JeremyLooks fishy to me!! Why then, when I did a search on this phone number, did the IRS not come up!! They want your SS number right off the bat!! Sorry, I don't give my SS number to anyone I'm not sure of. If it's that important, they'll call me back and identify themselves!!
- IRS DeadbeatThey called; only asked for my 'last 4' of ssn; and street address. told them I wasn't comfortable with giving info over the phone (identity theft and all); the guy was very friendly, said he understood, and highly recommended i call back the next day.

- Doubt itAny legit govt agency will not call you and demand info without identifying itself first. And if you say you suspect fraud and want it in writing they will ablige if they are legit. If not they are a SCAM.
It is so simple...if you call a business on your own then it is usually safe (but beware), if you call back someone who called you and did not state a purpose or name they are scum, if you answer an unsolicited call from someone who is vague about who they are or is extremely demanding then they are the WORST SCAMMERS. Keep your personal info to yourself!!! - gotmail replies to Jeremythis is an legit i.r.s.phone. see pub 594 you'll find out.get the publication on website www.irs.gov.but usually the i.r.s. will send you certified mail if you owe them money.so just be careful dealing with this phone # with the technology now, they can dup the #
- ironica27Left a message on my cell phone around 7:45 pm. Did not identify themselves but left this message please call this number by end of business today using this file #----------. I tried to call the number they left (800-829-7650)around 8:10 but they were closed. Called the number again first thing in the morning after confirming that that WAS the IRS (per IRA website)but nobody picked up. Got a recorded message saying that "due to technical difficulties your call cannot be processed at this time and to call again saying that their office hours are from 7am-10pm. Weird thing is when I called them last night they said their office hours were from 8am-8pm. Not to be paranoid but something definitely smells fishy.
- athe 1st thing they ask for is a soc #.
that may be the IRS, but I would not give anyone I spoke to info. they sounded shady.
It may have been the IRS, if you feel you have an IRS type issue. I wold find and IRS office and talk to them. NEVER give our SS# over the phone. - MichiganWhen I called back their computer systems were conveniently down and while they couldn't access my information by the case number they left on my voice mail, they could miraculously do so with my social security number.
Sorry...so far this isn't passing the smell test to me.- Caller: Voice Broadcast
- JohninGA| 3 repliesJust got off finished calling this number after I recieved the message last night. I read the posts on here before I called and was cautious before I gave them any information. The number is legitimate for the IRS. It is from their automated levy system. Luckily, the system called my house in error as the person they were looking for was nobody in my family. I spoke to an IRS representative from a different number I got at the irs.gov website and verfied the call was legitimate. If you recieve this number from a message, I would recommend you return the call.
- Caller: IRS
- MichaelCThe number itself is legitimate but I think it may have been hijacked. The IRS will NEVER call - they ALWAYS use snail mail.
- Caller: Allegedly the IRS
- NJpersonReceived this v-mail as well on Friday night.I have not called back.Funny thing is, they do not ask for any particular individualwhich seems strange.I will call back in the A.M.and let you guys know.

- daveAlso got a call from this number Friday night around 5:30. I as well tried to call and got a recording. Seems very strange to me. Again I was given a case number on the message...I will be looking into this more, I know it comes up as the IRS website, but I will be sure not to give any info.
- wasiscamed| 2 repliesI got the call last night, was told to call that day regarding file#___. It was after 8 when I received the call. I called back and the IRS answered - a tape saying they were closed. When I called the next day, I talked to an agent who identified herself with a number. She found nothing pending on our account and said to report any future calls to them. BUT, I had to give her our SSS#s to look up our account. Nothing about our conversation felt suspicious, but ....after reading these postings, I'm not so sure.
The agent told me a legitimate caller would leave his/her own identification number and personal desk number to call, not the 800 number.- Caller: supposedly the IRS
- Questioning this callour caller i.d. showed "unknown number" but the young man claimed he was with the IRS, used the last name "gangloff", and identified his agent number, and a case number. then he pressed me quickly for the last 4 digits of my SS# without identifying the purpose of his call. when i asked to call HIM back he gave me the IRS 800#, not a desk phone number. like an 800# would aleviate my concerns. hmmm. sounds fishy to me too.
when we called the 800# we were on hold so long i aged a year. finally hung up. - Mac| 2 repliesYea. I just got this call. Of course an IRS call always scares us. No one wants to find out they owe money and penalties. Calling right now the number. Did not put in my SS# which the automated system of course asks for.
Think scam.
They can snail mail me any correspondence...- Caller: IRS
- MacAnyone that says not to ignore these calls is probably part of the scam. When I did 'potentially' of the IRS money they sent it snail mail as they always do. They did not call. Ever.
I finally got a hold of them. But as soon as they ansered guys said he was sorry but would be right back and put me on hold. I never said a word.
Then he came back and gave me his name. Scott and ID#. Then he asked for my name. I gave him my claim #. He then asked for my name. I told him they could just snail mail me anything. That it might not even be for me and that happens all the time. He made silly little stupid comments that IRS people Do Not make. Told him to tell me the name on the account. Said he could not do that. Stumbled over his words on why. Then I gave him my initials. Still not good enough. I again told him to snail mail it. He said they do not do that. Some where along the line he started telling me I could call back if I did not want to deal with him but that I was going to wait in line, etc.
Imagine. IRS refusing to snail mail something out? Hahaha!
Scam!- Caller: Supposidly IRS
- WhilaI am the bookkeeper for a Chamber of Commerce, we got the call after 6 p.m. last night and was told we "must" call before the end of the day "today", mind you, we close at 5 p.m. I, too, was given a case # and did as most of you, went straight to Google. While the number is legit, but what I pulled up from that # is Federal Payment Levy Program info. From what I read there, they "send" you notices, not contact you via phone. Luckily I remembered this site and had a feeling that perhaps it wasn't real.

- AlfalfaFrom their website:
"Under the State Income Tax Levy Program, we may levy (take) your state tax refund. Currently, this only applies to individual state tax refunds, but may include business state tax refunds in the future. SITLP matches federal tax delinquent accounts against a database of state tax refunds for states participating in SITLP. If your state tax refund is levied, the state will issue a notice advising you of the levy. The IRS will also issue a notice, after the levy, offering you the opportunity to appeal the levy. The IRS notice will NOT be issued if you previously received a notice of our intent to levy that advised you of your right to a hearing. The state and IRS notices refer you to call (800) 829-7650 or (800) 829-3903 for assistance".

- gethelp| 4 repliesHi,
I received a call on my cell with unknown at 8 PM and I did not lift the call. Generally the timeshare marketing companies call me so I did not lift the call. I have a legitimate reason to worry as I owe IRS some money and I fell off the installment agreement for a while. I did not get any notice and also not sure as I moved last month and my mail was on hold for some time. I was really worried but after reading the forum I am at ease but will try to call them back to find out what is going on.
thanks and any advive would help me on how are they able to get our information and I know some companies have access to the IRS database and send out mails from attorneys and tell us that they can solve our problems. I think some attorneys may be doing mischief to get some business by causing worry.- Caller: Supposedly IRS
