- gethelpJust to add to my previous posts.
I think this call is scam and to support my argument I owe taxes when I was self employed and the phone numbers for salaried W2 employees is 1-800-829-7650 and for self employed the collection line is different
and that too they called on my cell phone is fishy. But still I'll give them a call to make sure that it is not a issue
Thanks- Caller: Supposedly IRS
- Questioning the callI received four calls on my home phone from an automated machine saying this is the IRS last night, was told to call that day between 8AM - 8PM regarding case#___. It was after 8 when I received the call. I called back today and got a message asking for my SS# - I hung up... I don't give my SS# to anyone and I know the IRS usually sends by snail mail. Weird thing is I don't know how they got my home # when I put my cell # on my taxes. This sounds like a scam to me....

- Lil replies to Jeremy| 1 replyI called the number and they asked for the case number that was left on my answering machine. I gave it and they asked my name. After giving my first name only, they asked about an Antwoine Personwithmylastname. Whoever they are after ain't moi!
- gmp19444Situation Similar to those described above except the person gave his name and ID #. Asked my if I was calling about myself or someone else. When I asked what company he was call for; he hung up. [He sounded as if he had just awakened.]He would not repeat his name.
I did get a recorded answer saying it was the IRS with several options; none of which applied. Was on hold for 5-10 minutes.- Caller: Unknown - IRS
- onthephoneI am currently calling them back after reading these posts. I kept pressing 0 at the SSN prompt(Three incorrect attempts) and am currently on hold for a representative.

Seems legit, I refused to give him my SSN over the phone and he directed me to a local IRS office. I still recommend to NOT give your SSN to this number, and to go into your local office, you never know.. I may end up going and having them tell me they dont know anything, which is better than having my identity stolen(again)- Caller: Internal Revenues Service (IRS)

"The Automated Collection System (ACS) is an integral part of the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) process for collecting unpaid taxes and securing unfiled tax returns from both individual and business taxpayers. When taxpayers do not comply with the IRS’ computer-generated notices, ACS tax examiners attempt to contact them by telephone to secure payments or unfiled returns. The ACS is the computer system that assigns these cases to the individual tax examiners."

"When the IRS sends a bill to a taxpayer, if the taxpayer does not respond to the first notice or subsequent notices, the account becomes delinquent. Delinquent accounts may be turned over to the Automated Collection System (ACS) or to the Collection field function. ACS personnel will contact the taxpayer by telephone to attempt to work out an agreeable payment solution. If the delinquent account requires field contact, a revenue officer will try to resolve the account with the taxpayer."
This number is in a few articles on irs.gov, though ACS shows up in more.. I believe this to be legitimate but I still recommend you contact your local office in person. From what the articles say, this is the step where the fees get more and more outrageous. I, however, have not received any information in the mail from the IRS, so either they have my wrong address(which isnt possible considering they have my new cell) or it is regarding someone other than me. Since the voicemail never included my name, I am uncertain as to whether it is even for me... But I still refuse to give my SSN over the phone just to figure out.- Caller: IRS - Automated Collection System

- eliam replies to gethelp| 2 repliesPeople! This is a legitimate IRS number and I am glad I called them and did not assume it to be a scam. The lady was actually very helpful and accomodating. Please for your own sakes do not ignore a call from them or you will be royally screwed. They will work with you and give you whatever time you might need. If you don't call them you could go to the ATM machine a couple of days later only to find that your money has been garnished.

- eliam| 1 replyThis is a legitimate number. Do not make the mistake of assuming them a scam because it is not a scam. I called them and was on hold for atleast a half hour but it was indeed the IRS and they are accommodating and helpful. If you make the mistake of ignoring them you could end up with your salary being garnished or your bank account closed.
- eliamBy the time you get a call from this number your time is pretty much up so be sure to call it. It will alleviate you of alot of stress. Trust me.
- bI just got the same call. Entered my social and as I was on the last number I got suspicious and hung up. Called the IRS directly and they said that they are NOT contacting me and that I am NOT being Levied!!
How do we report this and to whom?? I'm afraid that I might have just been scammed.
B - rvatorThis is a legitimate number for the IRS. I just got off the phone with a very helpful woman from the IRS (she stated her name and ID number). She did ask for my SSN, but since I thought this might be a scam, I told her I have a case reference number. She gladly accepted that and looked it up. She asked my name, which I told her, and she said she was looking for someone else (I recently moved so the new home phone number I received from the phone company must have been the previous number for the guy they are looking for). She apologized for the inconvenience and was thankful to update the records so that she would not call me again.
This is clearly not a scam. I would recommend calling back if you get a call from this number. Originally I thought it was a scam because the voicemail message was an automated voice and it did not specify a name of who they were inquiring about. Anyway, it is all cleared up now, just a mixup. - chrisGot the call at 4:55 pm but wasnt home to take the call. Left what everyone else is talking about, a message to call by close of business today and give case number. Unlike many of you, I do owe money, and this isnt how they contact you.

- suspicious replies to Jeremy| 2 repliesthis is not the IRS. when the first thing they ask you is to validate your social security number and your address, you gotta know there's fraud!
- LB| 1 replyrecieved call stating this was a business matter for me, they did not state who they were only that they were open from 8am to 8pm. very strange
- Caller: not given
- Do not believe. replies to LBI just got my phone call. I think that they just try to get your personal information. If they get it on the first try, then the scam worked. If not, then they just give out the real IRS number. So if we call back, it is the IRS number and we do not report this scam and they can continue. I have noticed that everyone who called back had a negative outcome. I do not see why the irs would use an unknown caller id.
As for the person who states that we must call back, I think that the message is part of the scam.
Every single one of my contacts with the IRS has been by snail mail. - ARBReceived a call from a blocked number indicating it was from the IRS and that I needed to contact them before the end of the day. Whoever called left just a reference number; no name. Well guess what? I'm not calling this number. I work for the IRS and this is an identity theft type deal. I'm reporting it to my supervisor. I don't know why, but I have the feeling that this is a collection agency that uses the same first 3 letters as the IRS. Such as Internal Recovery System or so.

- DeCalls came in over the previous several weeks identified as 'Out of Area' which I never answer. they left a voice mail after about 3 weeks asking me to call them by end of day. I called and spoke with Mr. Thomas id5900582. He identified himself as being with the Internal Revenue Service. He confirmed the last 4 digits of my ss# but didn't ask for more. I declined to give him any personal information and opted to go to the local irs office. He asked me which office I would go to which indicated to me that he didn't have all my info and wasn't sure where I lived.

- Lisa| 1 replyAn automated message was left for anyone? to return the call to 1-800-829-7650 and it had to be today before 8 pm. They also left a long reference number for ? to give when calling back. I called the number and was asked to enter my social security number. I DO NOT give this information over the phone especially if I am not sure WHO I am giving it to. I was asked a second time for my social security number, when I did not enter it I was put on hold with music, then for no reason a fast busy signal and I hung up. I never received any mail from Internal Revenue stating there was any problem so I am definately confused. More than one person lives at this address, they gave no reference as to WHOM they were looking for. Not sure if this is legit or not.
