- CharlieI just wanted to add the "case" number he left doesn't match anything on any of my irs paper work. I just got a letter last week. It's my social security number.
- Caller: Fake IRS
- melzy replies to JeremyThere are a few things too fishy for this call.
1. They agent calling did not identify themself with a name
2. If the IRS wanted to get in touch with you they would do it by mail first, and
3. IRS televised on the news in August, that they do not ask for SS# or credit card info over the telephone, they have it!
Dont share your personal information over the phone and if you do, watch your credit very closely. - Melissa BertochA phone call came in and the caller did not idientify themself and claimed to be the IRS and that it was imperative that I call them back before close of business that day. I was out of town and there was no other attempted contact from this number via the caller ID. No other means of contact had been attempted by the IRS.
I tried the reverse look up, called and the recorded voice asked for SS#, did not give, then while on hold was told can use credit card to pay debt (s), they don't even have- Caller: IRS impersonator
- joek46I received a call today (caller-id displayed "Private"). Not having a caller-id displayed I let it go to voice-mail. It was an automated call identifying themselves as the IRS. Said it was important that I call them today before the close of business. The call stated their normal business hours (Mon-Fri 8-8) and have me a 10-digit case number.
Not having received any US mail notifications from the IRS in the last few years I was reasonably certain it was a scam or mistake and decided to ignore it. I changed my mind after about an hour and called the number they left, 1-800-829-7650. After a 15 minute wait, an operator came on and id'd herself as an IRS employee and game me her badge number. Long story short - it was indeed a legitimate call from the IRA. They were trying to locate the daughter of my wife's ex which she hadn't been in contact with for about 8 years. The call ended amicably with their records updated and our phone number purged from this particular search.
IMHO, don't ignore a call from this number. It's a valid call and it is indeed from everyone's favorite government agency.- Caller: Internal Revenue Service
- Still not falling for it! replies to Barefoot ContestantUm, this is only about State tax refunds....not really a true levy. And if you read, the IRS will SEND a letter and give you 30 days to rectify any levy....they will NOT just freeze your accounts without warning.
- Still Not Falling For It!I called back the number, just like everyone who got the call after 8 PM and was told to punch in my SSN immediately upon the call being automatedly answered...checked the IRS website and got some very interesting information on the site regarding calls/email phishing schemes.
If you suspect that a phone call or letter that you received is not from a legitimate IRS agent, then see below: (directly copied and pasted from the IRS's website:
Phone call:
Ask for a call back number and employee badge number.
Contact the IRS to determine if the caller is an IRS employee with a legitimate need to contact you.
If you determine the person calling you is an IRS employee with a legitimate need to contact you, call them back.
Letter or notice via paper mail:
Contact the IRS to determine if the mail is a legitimate IRS letter.
If it is a legitimate IRS letter, reply if needed.
If caller or party that sent the paper letter is not legitimate, contact the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484
(I wil add that I contacted the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration and have filed a complaint. Lucky for me I knew NOT to give any personal information over the phone, because I do have a IRS debt that I am currently under a payment plan and have not defaulted....came close, but didn't default, and didn't get levied....so this call was pretty scary for me but I thought about it and came on here to check things out before I jumped in head first!)
Be safe! Take care of your identity! AND BEWARE of other people on here who are saying that this is truly the IRS....they are not using all the correct facts. And they are talking a big game. When you call and refuse to give your SSN, they immediately tell you to go to a local office OR they tell you that they have the wrong person for the phone number....however, if they DO get your SSN#, then the story changes just slightly enough for them to get bank info and supposed payments made directly from your bank.....
NEVER ever give your personal info over the phone....- Caller: IRS

- SCAMUm, helllllooooo, people, no one should be asking you for the first 5 numbers of your social security number. They want it to go with the last 4 digits that is already circulating out there in the worldwide web. IRS never calls you, they always send letters. Be smart, everybody!

- ChrisI have been getting tons of calls from various debt collectors looking for someone else with the same name as mine. I typically don't answer, but after a few calls from the same ones, I will answer and try to convince them I am not the one they are looking for. Usually just a year of birth does it, I never disclose SSN. I received this call telling me to call the IRS before 8pm at this number. I called, ignored the prompt to enter SSN or EIN, and waited for a person. Man gave his name and ID. I gave the case number left on my answering machine. I gave a birth date, and that didn't match. I hesitated at first to give address, He offered an address of a local office. I went ahead and gave address and he confirmed the case number was not me. I did not give SSN.
If you know the IRS has your current address, you would have been contacted by mail first. The call is likely not for you. If you ignored mail, were way overdue on taxes, or they may have an old address for you, then the call may be legit. If concerned go to an IRS office with the case number to confirm if it is for you or someone else. Sounds like this is a last chance effort for IRS to contact people who have not responded to other methods.
This type of debt collection to call anyone with a similar name should be illegal, especially if you have as common a name as I do!
Never offer your SSN (or even as much info as I did) to anyone on the phone you can't confirm. If they are legitimate, there will be another way to deal with them.- Caller: Private Caller
- Monica VillaI got a call from unknown name and number on my cell phone at 811pm last night, the man calling identified himself as Mr. Martin and asked for me by my name, when i said it was me, he said "before i can proceed to discuss why i am contacting you i need you to verify your complete name, address, DOB, and social security number, i stopped him and my gut told me to tell him i needed his info to call him back and he gave me a number with a case number. i've tried all day today to get through the legit number he gave me 1-800-829-7650 and have yet to get through. I have had IRS issues in the past but they are resolved since 3 years ago.

- UnscammableTotal BS. Scam. No government agency will ask for your personal info to identify you. They already have it. Be smart, people, especially with cell phone calls. I got the same pitch as everyone else. I would not give my personal info. When I asked what it was about, the guy said "I can't give you any info without verifying your info." That was a major tipoff. I called the IRS directly, and they said a) we had no reason to contact you, and b) the IRS will not ask for any personally identifiable information over the phone.

- Legit| 12 repliesThis IS a true #. I work for the IRS in the Collections area. We DO make outcalls up to 9:00pm your timezone. Most of the time, we make the outcall and if there is no response, we can Levy your bank account or your paycheck. If you just call, we can stop this and set up an arrangement with you.
We have a couple different mssgs that will be left but basically, we should give the phone # above, our hours of 8am-8pm m-f (your timezone) and a case reference #. We will ask to either call back that day or at the latest by the end of the next business day.
When you call, we do need to verify we are speaking to the correct person. We call this disclosure to make sure we do not give your info to the wrong person. The reference # does help if the phone # is wrong on our records and you are not the person we are looking for. If you are, yes, we will need your SSN, Name, address and DOB to access the account.
If you are still concerned, feel free to call the toll free IRS # of 1-800-829-1040. This should still ask you for your information but should alleviate your fears and you will then be transferred to our collections area for assistance.
It is frustrating since even though your concerns are justified... you are harming yourself if you do not contact us.- Caller: IRS

- dave| 1 replyThis is the IRS # I called from a letter I got from them involving back returns with a case #. I'M AMAZED SO MANY OF YOU THOUGHT IT WAS WEIRD THEY'D ASK FOR SS# ETC. It seems normal to have a case # and want the ss#
- steve88 replies to Jeremyi called irs and was told this is working irs number, don't trust me, call irs and confirm. this is the irs new way of notification, a central hub, that sends messages from all departments. started in jan, 2011
- steve88 replies to Jeremyi got one of these call with a case number, then i checked on net for an irs contact # i called it and was told this number is real. what it is: a caseworker looks at your file and has an issue with it, they then enter your info in a computer and it generates an automatic call. the call can be from any of the irs departments. it is the irs streamlining their system to save money.
don't trust me look up irs and give them a call, find out for yourself.
for me they were looking for someone that used to live here and hadn't changed their contact number
spent 45 min on phone most waiting - Anti-Scammer replies to Legit| 5 repliesBS. You are full of it. I've dealt with the IRS and have NEVER had a phone call from them. You're probably a member of this crooked organization. People, don't listen to this person.
- Anti-Scammer replies to Anti-Scammer| 1 replyIn fact, when I asked to have them mail the info to me, the "IRS" rep did everything they could to dissuade me from doing so. I repeatedly requested snail mail and the person finally terminated the call. TOTAL scam.
- IsuspectSCAM| 1 replyI received a phone call from this number last week on my work phone. I was out of the office and attempted to return the call today. A man immediately answered the phone and identified himself with a badge number..no name. He didn't ask me any questions, so I informed him that I had received a call at my work to call in reference to a case number. He proceded to tell me that their computer systems were down for end of year so he could not look up my case number. But he could gladly look me up with my SSN. I informed him I was not going to give it over the phone and I did not believe the call was intended for me as it was received at my work location. The man told me that was fine and hung up.
I gave him no personal information and I do feel it was a scam. And I am 100% sure I do not owe any money to the IRS. If I do, they will send me a certified letter. My husband delivers them all the time.- Caller: Unavailable

- btj replies to U can't scam meAfter reading these post I was very worried about the voicemail. I do owe the irs. I called the number and the rep did ask for my SS# I refused and she ask could I provide the last 4 digits which I did. While on the call I was still very skeptical. Once she gave me the info on how much I owe and to me how much my last payment arrangement was I knew that it was the irs. I set my new payment arrangements. After I got off of the call I called the irs # that was on one of my old notices and the irs rep verified that the call was legit and looked up my new payment info. The call is from there collections dept. It is to help you so that they don`t go any further with the collection process. I am glad that I called. If you feel nervous about calling.Call this # 1-800-829-0922 it is a irs # that was on a old notice that I received. Hope that this helps someone out.
- Buddy replies to AnitI work for the IRS. That number is legitimate. It belongs to ACS which stands for Automated Collection System. It is staffed by IRS employees. Hours of operation are 8 AM - 8 PM your local timezone. Please take a look at http://www.irs.gov/irm/part5/irm_05-019-005.html specifically the paragraph under 5.19.5.4.1.4 Leaving Messages On An Answering Machine. Also look under the heading 5.19.5.3.10 Telephone Techniques and Communication Skills. You will see under #3 what the employee must provide, and #14, when making an outgoing call and the taxpayer is reluctant to give the TIN/SSN, the employee can give you the last 4 of your SSN and you provide the first 5. ACS handles files by case number, which most other departments in the IRS do not. The fact that you are getting a call from ACS means you have ignored the previous notices telling you you have a balance due, or you never received them. I am so sick of yahoos on here spouting off about this number being a scam. Accounts management, commonly called customer service, is the department most taxpayers talk to when resolving balances. They do not use case numbers. They use name, SSN, address, and other identifying information to determine if the caller is authorized. As for the IRS will never call, see http://www.irs.gov/privacy/article/0,,id=179820,00.html . If you suspect the person on the phone is not calling from the IRS, ask for a callback number and employee badge number (ID number). At any time, you can ask for the employee's name and ID number, and they must give it to you. Finally, if you don't feel comfortable by doing business over the phone, show up at a Tax Assistance Center http://www.irs.gov/localcontacts/index.html , and do it in person.
