I work for the IRS also.  Let these morons avoid calling us back and get a bank levy and then they'll call and whine saying we never tried to contact them.  Face it, people who are dodging bill collectors don't fill out Form 8822 to change their address with the IRS, so in most cases, we don't have the accurate address.  As for the certified letters, the IRS does send balance due notices by regular mail.  On the 4th attempt, a certified CP504 gets sent.  It's funny when people call back saying they never received anything prior to the CP504.  Did you think that the letters being sent were from a scammer?  Everyone, IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE US, just show up at a tax assistance center.  Here's how to find your tax assistance center - http://www.irs.gov/localcontacts/index.html . http://www.irs.gov/irm/part5/irm_05-019-005.html

I received a call from this number and I have not heard anything prior about any taxes owed. They have paid me back in taxes that I over paid. It does not sound like it is "official" at all. I am with the others, I will wait for my notice in the mail.
I haven't even filed my taxes for last year.

SCAM...I called the Attorney Generals Office and they said the IRS will NEVER call you with a tax matter. A letter will ALWAYS be mailed.  These people only want your social security number.  Once they have it they tell you that you're not the person they needed to talk to.  Do Not Give Your Social Security Out to anyone!!   Identity theft ...

We got the same type of message this morning - left on our answering machine....with only the fact of it being an urgent message from the Internal Revenue Service and to call back immediately and refer to the case number they left. I did call but they would not give any infor...even with the case number...said they could not discuss the matter unless I gave them my full name, SS#, address, birthdate, etc.  I questioned why we received nothing by mail, if in fact this was a legitimate case from the IRS...She said she had no way of knowing why we had not received any mail...suggesting an error in address perhaps (having lived at this address for over a decade I doubt that!) anyway, I got no where with her...told her I would call the IRS directly...she said to go ahead. So I did...and when I got to the TRUE IRS rep I was told they always will contact by mail....will not leave a call back such as this. I was also told that there are many scams right now with people calling just like this and getting the personal data. IT IS A SCAM....there was no reason for IRS to contact us...I confirmed this will my own call directly to IRS.  DO NOT GIVE ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION....this number is a scam..!!!

I received the same sort of message on my landline answering machine and my work cell phone.  (My official, Federal government issued telephone number.  Neither number appears on my income tax return, two other contact numbers are provided.)  The message said to call back before close of business and gave a case reference number.  I wanted to give the scammers a hard time, so I called the number, entered 123456789 as my social security number.  I was on hold, no one came to the line before I tired of the exercise.  Freaking scammers.  May the IRS find issue with their returns!

Maybe I was scammed, maybe not
Got the voicemail on a Friday night around 6 pm. Called back around 7 pm. Computer receptionist said hours were 8am to 8pm, but then it said I was calling after hours and to try back another time. So much for the fire drill that required I call them back that very day before closing. I Google the phone number and found this site as well as the IRS page confirming that the phone number belongs to them. I'm not sure how a scam would work using their own phone number. Has the number on their site been hacked to match the phone call? Are the scammers somehow using the real number after hours unbeknownst to the IRS?
Anyway, I called the IRS back this morning and gave them the case number from the original voicemail, got   the agent's name and ID#, and we figured out that they are not even looking for me. Meanwhile (Friday night) I placed precautionary credit freezes on my file at the three major credit bureaus. I'll keep a close eye on things for awhile, but I think I am unscathed.

I got a call from that # this evening. The man at the other end gave me a Mr. Smith for his name n then rattled off his "code" number quickly. He then asked for my SS# for verification of who he was talking to. (he already called me by my name) I refused n he said he understood n that I need to call that # tomorow. He said that biz hours are 8am-8pm Eastern time. Really? Then why did he call at 8:45pm Pacific? lol!

Like you all, I rely on forums like this one to help identify scams. While there are some valid reasons to list this call as a scam, I was a bit alarmed by the call because I actually do owe a small balance (less than 1K) to the IRS. I actually picked up the call, but because all my previous dealings with the IRS would be via USPS snail mail, I was skeptical to verify or offer any on of my personal info, and stated such to the caller. I was advised to call back 800-829-7650 and provide the case # I was given. Even when I called the # (which is a valid IRS #) I didn't verify my information via the automated system because I was STILL SKEPTICAL. So I decided to call 800-829-1040 and inquired with an IRS phone rep. The call I had received was indeed a legitimate call from the IRS collections dept. I was able to resolve my issue and was glad I called back, because this debt was being actively collected by the IRS. Not to try to scare anyone, but they can levy wages, property, bank accts etc.so I was glad to get to the bottom of it. If you are in doubt about it, I urge you to call the general number for the IRS, you can find it on their site at IRS.gov and if there is a legitimate reason for them to call you, it will be in your file and they can direct you to the proper department to resolve your issue. Also, you can go to your local IRS office and get in-person service. I hope this helps you all.

The number they give is a valid number for the IRS, however, that is not the number they are calling from. The caller is not calling from the IRS, the number they are calling from is blocked. If you do not answer, they leave a call back number as 800-829-7650, which again, is an IRS number, but if you were to actually speak to someone when they call, they are not the IRS. My advice is, if you receive this message, go ahead and take the time to call 800-829-7650 and speak with an IRS representative or call 800-829-1040 (also IRS) and ask if there is any reason that they would have been calling you. If not, go ahead and ignore future calls.

    DONT IGNORE THIS ONE

Im work in Information Security so im always suspicious of these types of calls.... however I did find it was legit and here is how.

    1. Call the number they gave... they have a detailed menu system when you call.... with updated messages like a change in hours of operations

    2. If you hang up, then call the normal IRS line, and follow the prompts to get your "TAX History", it forwards you into the same exact menu system with the same updated messages.

If this was a scam it would have been the most detailed same in the history of phone scams... just call the numbers, explore the promts and you will see what I mean

I got this call today and when I called back first thing the recording asked for was the ss# of the person I was calling about. They didn't tell me who I was calling about so I tried entering the case # they left me and that was invalid. They put me on hold and while on hold I started reading the post on here so I just hung up.

    Just to be sure
I just received the unknown phone call this morning..., little after 8. The message said that I needed to call back by the end of today...  I had no idea why IRS needed to call me to begin with.  I don't own any business.  I filed my tax through my accountant in March and already received refund!!
I called back with my unused work phone.  After about 10 min or so, a man answered and gave me his badge number, no name.  Before I said anything, he asked me for my SS#, NOT the case number.  I told him that I was not comfortable giving that over the phone.  He sounded a little irritated and told me that he would not be able to process my case without it.  I asked him if I could go to the local IRS office to confirm instead.  He said I could. So, I went to the local office.  They said that the tall-free number was legitimate.  Then they checked my record to see any outstainding activities.  They found absolutely nothing weired about my record. Then I asked one of the workers to listen to the message that I received. She did and confirmed me that was not from them. She said that if IRS called, it would not be an automated phone message.  In fact, by law, a real person with full name and ID number was supposed to leave an message if any.  She told me to report the suspicious phone call to 1-800-366-4484.  I tried but could not find the option for me to report "suspicious phone call"... I also went to the IRS.gov web but could not find the place to report this incident... I documented everything, just in case somebody else may contact me for this.  I am not sure whether the "real" IRS people make a phone call like that or not since this was my very first time experience.  But I really do not think any legitimate phone call requires you to give "FLL" SS# over the phone.  People, I strongly recommend you to go to the local IRS office before you do anything!!

I received this call also but I'm a 19 year old college student with no job that doesn't file taxes, this doesn't make sense. When I called the number the first thing it asked for was my ss number. Sounds weird.
