Keep trying as if you were trying to win tickets on the radio to be a specific caller. You have to try every few seconds. I got through. It's a legit number. Mine was LTR 4883C

This # is real and you talk to someone directly. It takes a min to get through do to such high call volume ,but its worth it. They told me it take 9 weeks to process and the reason being is my identity was stolen and they wanted to verify some very in dept information

    Good morning,

I would highly suggest calling as soon as they open up. If not, anytime before 10AM and you will be good to go. They are located in Texas. Which means they are on central time. So if you are on the East coast. Call at 8AM. On the West coast. You might as well get up at 5AM and make the phone call. Took me 15 minutes to get through to a live agent and took about 10 minutes to get verified. They will ask for your previous year tax return how your name is processed. They will ask a series of multiple choice questions in regards to your credit history. They will also ask for your adjusted gross income, any dependents claimed on your taxes and their social security number and they will also ask how much you will get back from the FED GOV before taxes and deduction from your tax preparer. The last lady I talked to Ms. Clinton was very nice and also the older gentleman with the heavy accent was very nice also. Just like with all customer service you need to get to them bright and early while they are still happy, because by the time 3PM rolls around. Anybody working a job for that long with that many people calling in will be burned out.

Good luck folks and here is to getting our cash money coin cheddar quicker than 6 weeks.

The purpose is to match your information input to the irs records.  This is to determine whether the filing is fraudulent/identity theft or legitimate.
It is not to verify whether the irs has the information.  :-)
It is to verify if you do!

We received a letter and WERE victims of Identity Fraud.  I called this IRS number at 6:45PM MST this evening and was on hold for less than 5 minutes.  The letter shows only 7AM - 7PM because they answer calls in each time zone between those hours (I asked).  I'm sorry for those of you that weren't victims but I do appreciate our letter.  We always pay something and the thief had requested a refund.........that triggered our flag.  I have to file the old fashion paper return this year but I'm not going to complain about any of the process or the help I received......great agent to work with

I contacted a help number on IRS web site and was told the number was legit.  I called the number and spoke with a woman who immediately gave her name and ID number.  She did ask personal information to verify my identity and then verified that a fraudulent return had been received.  She deleted the fraud return and gave instructions to file my proper return (by mail).  She said it could take up to 9 weeks to get the return back.  By the way, my letter was 4883C.  Also, I contacted my state and found out they also received a fraudulent return.  Be sure to check with them.  Good luck.
