- SomeoneI got a letter this week saying the same thing as many of you have, however in my case they have my spouse's name totally wrong, and it says we filed taxes on December 15th, 2015 um no we didn't file until March.

- breadandbutterMy employer was phished and everyone's W-2's were captured - EVERYONE. I filed my ID Theft Form (14039 at irs.gov FORMS) and made sure that it was mailed and faxed to the IRS and was flagged appropriately (end of March). After receiving a letter acknowledging the file and claim (early May), I attempted to verify online once last week and was routed to this number. I was able to get through after two tries today. The first time the call dropped because I was in a bad part of the house. The second time I was on hold for no longer than 2 minutes. I called around 515PM in the evening so I'm not sure if that made a difference or not. My original estimated time was 4-7 minutes. I suggest you block alone time and have everything you need in order to get verified - if you're organized, you'll be fine. I was put on hold for 3 additional minutes after I was verified and answered all of my clearance questions. You will be asked to answer another set of questions depending on if you pass your clearance set. Be mindful that the person on the other line wants to help as much as you are trying to get something fixed or resolved so be kind and understanding and they will too. (They are human and yes, the IRS.) If you have additional information that needs to be disclosed about your claim after you have answered all of your questions, let them know so that they can make notes for other departments handling your account. Though it's rare for the IRS to call, they will in very case sensitive circumstances. You have the option to disclose your phone number to them or they will give you a separate customer number to call so you can follow up on your own. They will ALWAYS send letters stating why they are contacting and a phone number for reference. I spent about 45 minutes on my call since I had several questions about my account which they were happy to break down for me. The agent who helped me stated their full name and agent number when they started our call. It's good to have a pen ready so you have a good point of reference of who you spoke with, what was said and when, should you need to follow up. Hopefully, this helps some of you out there looking to fix any looming IRS problems pertaining to phishing cases or ID theft. Good luck!

- Brody| 1 replyI received a letter from the IRS to call this number. I filed my income tax very early this year so I guess it triggered a red flag on the IRS side. I looked up the letter and number on the IRS website and it is a legit number. I called early in the morning and was talking to a person within 1 minute.

- Jack replies to Philece| 5 repliesWhat questions did they ask you?
- Bill Payer replies to Jack| 4 repliesthey ask you SS# mothers maiden name lines 7 and 71 on previous years tax returns (1040) etc. About 10-12 questions to verify your identity. IRS said that there have been multiple hack attempts and they are attempting to ensure that your information was accurate. I called Turbo Tax security team to confirm, they confirmed that the letter is legitimate, but when in doubt never call the number associated with a letter that you received, always go onto the www.IRS.gov website and call that number they have listed this will ensure that you are actually talking to the IRS and not a scammer or BS company trying to steal your identity. Hope this helps

- sideout replies to Bill Payer| 2 repliesthis helps bill, thanks. i was apprehensive also when i got the letter. though i called the number trying to see if it was legitimate, they guy on the other end was so rude and hung-up so adding to my suspicion. i just looked up the nearest IRS office and took all of the necessary information and got verified on-site. still was told it'll take 8-9 weeks to get my refund.
- Elliott Bettman| 1 replyI'm 99% sure that is a scam phone number. I got the "4883c" letter stating that somebody filed a 1040EZ return in my name. That WOULD be Fraudulent. I haven't filed my 2016 taxes yet. So...I called this number and got through right away (with the Government-that's Red Flag #1.) Red Flag #2 was that the guy on the phone had a foreign accent. Red Flag #3 is that he wanted info. from last year's tax return. I told him "I'm Sorry-you don't sound legitimate" and then he offered to put his "Supervisor" on the phone to "prove" that he was the Real Deal(!) At that point-I simply hung up. I googled the number, and, Indeed, there is an "IRS website" that corresponds to it. I thought the better of it, and called the REAL IRS number ending in 1040. After a complex electronic menu and fifteen minutes on hold, I got an agent who gave her full name and ID badge number (which the phony IRS guy DIDN'T.) She said that, NO, that is not one of their phone numbers, and she didn't recognize the Austin address either. (Actually-they DO have an address there, but the Idiot who sent the letter had the zip listed as "78-744." He didn't understand US Zip Codes.) We had a Good Laugh about the letter, and she told me to report the Fraud at their website. I didn't do this, because I had trouble using the website. Caviat Emptor.

https://www.irs.gov/individuals/understanding-your-4883c-letter - VirginiaI got this same letter last year and called and verified and never received my tax return last year. Was told it would take 9 weeks and it never happened. Never got any other letters after that. What should I do?
