- Waldo replies to MartinScammers are once again spoofing Verizon Wireless’ 1-800-922-0204 customer service number shown on a customer’s Caller ID in calls offering “refunds” ranging from $30-60 in return for personal information needed to “process a refund check or service credit.”
Verizon Wireless customers (including myself) have started receiving recent unsolicited calls from Verizon Wireless claiming an earlier billing error resulted in an overcharge to their wireless account. The amount of the credit varies, but is significant enough to get the attention of unwitting customers. The caller is asked to verify their Verizon Wireless “account password,” which is a critical piece of information not to be shared with unsolicited callers. Once exposed, anyone can call Verizon Wireless and make changes to your account.
Variations on this scam have been around since 2014. Last fall, callers were instructed to “apply for a refund” at phony websites run by the crooks, almost always detectable because the scammers registered web addresses close to Verizon’s legitimate address, but with two extra numbers attached. (eg. http://28verizon.com/, 27verizon.com, 48verizon.com, etc.) Most of these sites were shut down by early 2015.
Consumers usually believe the calls are genuine because their Caller ID reports the calling number originates with Verizon Wireless customer service. But such caller ID information can now be easily manipulated or faked, making it harder than ever to truly know who is calling.
610px-Verizon-Wireless-Logo_svgComplicating matters are Verizon’s own marketing calls to customers originating from the same 800 number, which are legitimate. In an effort to combat the scammers, customers can call Verizon Wireless back at 1-800-922-0204 and the automated call attendant will confirm any recent legitimate customer service calls (often for an “account review” or to tell you about a past due balance) made to your number recently. - Stevewtf - even verizon is being scammed. Got a call from "verizon - re: FreeVZW Msg: Your Authorization Code for request is 063134, if you did not request this code. please call 800-922 0204

- BCBig scam. Text message claiming to be Verizon - It's NOT Verizon, verified. I've gotten several similar to this over the last 18 months and Verizon always tells me it's not them (and aren't particularly interested in finding out who is impersonating them). Yesterday I cancelled my online access completely and today when it happened had any attempts to access online blocked. They send a message that your Verizon secret question and password have been changed and hope to get you to call back and give them information. In the last two days I've gotten texts ("Free VZW msg") about an authorization code as if I'd tried to get into my account and telling me that if I did NOT request this code, call us at 800-922-0204. I texted back that I'd reported them to Verizon and the feds.

- gfpClaimed to be Verizon looking for Jacqueline. Told them nobody by that name lived here or had for the last 35 or so years. The lady was polite enough. Don't know if it was a real call or not.
- Caller: Verizon
- Maybe this number gets spoofed?I received a call from this number which was legitimately a Verizon call. Husband was in the store with a representative and this number called me to verify he was okay to make changes...on the phone with him, then on the phone with me, and sent a text with a code to me from a recognized number where I have received Verizon texts in the past.
- Caller: Verizon Wireless
- Call type: Valid
- CaliSomeone tried to charge $2,100 on my business card and this number popped up on my credit card statement. Thank god CHASE caught it and reversed the charge.
- DonI have accidentally swiped the #balance number on my phone and immediately hung up before the number even rang, then shortly after I have received a call from this number. First off why would Verizon call me back because the #balance number and when I call that number I want an automated voice or text message with the balance, not a customer service rep. Second, if this is Verizon then they have the sorriest and dumbest sounding reps that I have heard in my 52 yeas on this earth.
I joked to others about the first call that was so unprofessional that I swore was a scammer that if Verizon had reps this awful that I would cancel my service...I don't know if this is a scam or not, but if it isn't then Verizon is pathetic either way. Customer service reps sound drunk and confused.- Caller: Not sure-claimed to be Verizon

- Stephanie Werner| 2 repliesI received a phone call from those number. Next thing I know I had 421 dollars taken from my bank account.
- BigA replies to Stephanie WernerSo how did a phone call equate into money being taken from your bank account?
- MikeHuntleton replies to Stephanie WernerYeah, thats not possible, unless theres more to the story than your giving....like maybe you allowed them access to your account number. But why make a report without any details of the report? Thats like me saying "theres a suspicious car parked on my street"...has about as much meaning as your report!
- MartiThe caller ID made it look like it was a call from the US Government (possibly SSA). It was an automated call from Verizon. I don't even have service with Verizon.
- Caller: Verizon
- Unwanted callerThe number 800-922-0204 called me at 8 minutes past midnight. No message was left. This is obviously a scam number. I see other posters about Verizon with this number. I am not a Verizon customer.
