Calls my friends asking for me or any information they can get. When asked who they are, they claimed to be north Carolina department of revenue. I called the actual number for NC Dept.of Revenue back and they don't have a record of the call to my friend. I left nc in 2013.

I had a call from this # saying it was a debt collector.  I do not have any debt that would be going to a collection agency and why would they start with a phone call vs. any wtitten notification.   Scam????

The call was from Professional Bureau of Collection of Maryland.  Apparently someone had given out my cell number as a contact number for a student loan.  When I gave the rep my first name only she said she would remove my name from their list as I was not the person they're trying to track down.

Called number back. I didn't give any information more than my first name and phone number, since they already had it. they were looking for someone else who apparently used our phone number. Our number is unlisted so not sure how else they would have got it.

They called a number that i havent used in 10 years, but is occupied by my ex husband. I've tried calling them several times after to get that number removed from their records, each time i'm disconnected, or i'm put on hold, then disconnected. What kind of janky business are they running?! Not professional at all.

Well known debt scammers, your ex is the target of this extortion ring.  They are calling you to panic and embarrass him into paying.  Here is what you need to do, to know, and where to report:

You need to send them a certified, return receipt "not me" letter (think of it as the best $6.47 you ever invested).  Also send it first class mail in case no one will sign for it.  Make a notation of that fact at the bottom of the letter.  You also need to report them to the proper agencies to which I have provided links to.  Then you need to go out and get a consumer lawyer to sue them on a contingency basis (no money out of your pocket) and let them pay you for the harassment.  If everyone did these three things, these crooks would be bankrupt and we would all be the richer for it.  Use these web sites to find an attorney in your state that will probably take the case on a contingency basis (no money out of your pocket up front):  http://www.consumeradvocates.org/
    http://www.consumeradvocates.org/find-an-atto ... tates_value=All

Everything else you need to know follows including at least two agencies where you should report their criminal activities.

City of New York lists violations:  http://www1.nyc.gov/assets/dca/downloads/pdf/ ... ense1071448.pdf

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

Read up on your rights here, get template letters to send and also make a complaint at this government site: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Theis place calls my house between 9:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. I'm happy to talk to someone and see what they want but lol they hang up when I answer. Lol ok well, my son and husband had teeth removed yesterday and while they were trying to get some rest, they called.... Then of course when I answered they hung up. I'd had. I called the number on my called ID. A woman answered and asked what department I wanted I told her I didn't know cause every time they call they hang up. I lost my temper and yelled at her to stop calling my house if all they were going to do is hang up.  I don't know if she thought she was being funny or what, but I IMMEDIATELY got a call from them where they promptly hung up. So I called them back. Hang up. So I called back again and again and again. They always picked up then immediately hung up again then they started calling me and when I answered I must have been placed on hold cause they weren't answering and this time they didn't hang up. I figured out their game and stopped it. FINALLY, I guess they got tired of me someone politely answered and again asked what department. I. Just as politely told her I didn't know what department because they always hang up when they call. Then once again just as politely told her my name and I wasn't sure if I was in her computer or not, but if they didn't stop calling me I was going to contact the news, my attorney, the FCC, and the police. Thank you and I hung up. So far I haven't heard anything from THEM but about ten minutes later I got a call from my own area code. Again a hang up. I can't prove it but something tells me it was them. So I guess now I have to find an attorney. This is the DUMBEST thing I've ever had to deal with

This number called my work looking for a Christopher Becker, I told them that we have never had anyone by that name working here. He said thank you and hung up.  I don't have a clue who this person is or what they want with him.  I am sure it is some kind of scam.
