- CWG40 replies to Not born yesterdayIRS private collectors are supposed to send written notice to taxpayers. The IRS also sends written notice to taxpayers that their account will be handled by a private contractor. Private contractors must follow the provisions of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
See: https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-business ... debt-collection - wb| 2 repliesThis is actually a legitimate call from a debt collector approved by the IRS...Conserve. There are four agencies the IRS uses. The below is from the IRS website. https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/new-private-debt ... ights-protected IR-2016-125, Sept. 26, 2016 Español
WASHINGTON - The Internal Revenue Service announced today that it plans to begin private collection of certain overdue federal tax debts next spring and has selected four contractors to implement the new program.
The new program, authorized under a federal law enacted by Congress last December, enables these designated contractors to collect, on the government’s behalf, outstanding inactive tax receivables. As a condition of receiving a contract, these agencies must respect taxpayer rights including, among other things, abiding by the consumer protection provisions of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. The IRS has selected the following contractors to carry out this program:
CBE Group
1309 Technology Pkwy
Cedar Falls, IA 50613
Conserve
200 CrossKeys Office park
Fairport, NY 14450
Performant
333 N Canyons Pkwy
Livermore, CA 94551
Pioneer
325 Daniel Zenker Dr
Horseheads, NY 14845
These private collection agencies will work on accounts where taxpayers owe money, but the IRS is no longer actively working their accounts. Several factors contribute to the IRS assigning these accounts to private collection agencies, including older, overdue tax accounts or lack of resources preventing the IRS from working the cases.
The IRS will give each taxpayer and their representative written notice that their account is being transferred to a private collection agency. The agency will then send a second, separate letter to the taxpayer and their representative confirming this transfer.
Private collection agencies will be able to identify themselves as contractors of the IRS collecting taxes. Employees of these collection agencies must follow the provisions of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and must be courteous and respect taxpayer rights.
The IRS will do everything it can to help taxpayers avoid confusion and understand their rights and tax responsibilities, particularly in light of continual phone scams where callers impersonate IRS agents and request immediate payment.
Private collection agencies will not ask for payment on a prepaid debit card. Taxpayers will be informed about electronic payment options for taxpayers on IRS.gov/payments. Payment by check should be payable to the U.S. Treasury and sent directly to IRS, not the private collection agency.
The IRS will continue to keep taxpayers informed about scams and provide tips for protecting themselves. The IRS encourages taxpayers to visit IRS.gov for information including the “Tax Scams and Consumer Alerts” page.
For more information visit the Private Debt Collection page on IRS.gov.

My brother works for the IRS and they do not collect this way! DO NOT BELIEVE WB dated March 12, 2018. All IRS agents have ID numbers that they can provide you when calling. All CORRESPONDENCE is done by mail. I believe WB is one of the SCAMMERS.

- Aria replies to NimeshIt does not matter who they are collecting for if they ARE a legitimate company, if they do not follow the rules/laws, they can not do anything to you!! A letter has to be sent out first stating what's going on, what you owe, and who you owe it to. That letter not being sent means you have actual control over the matter & do not let them fool you. If they call you and you tell them to stop calling, they have too obey!! If they call back after you tell them to stop, it is harassment and you can take legal actions there as well. I know these things because I deal with these things working in medical billing. Also, if they threaten you over the phone with legal actions and they do not follow through, you have a right to take legal actions against them on that. They can not talk to you in a hateful, rude way either. If they do, you can take legal actions there as well. They do not want people knowing these things because they have no ground to stand on against you & they not getting any money for the matter. Never be scared of these people when you know the rules/laws. When I mention these to those people, they change there tune and 99.9% of the time, never hear back from them!!
- james replies to Jennifer Fox| 1 replyask them to send you the bill and the name of the man or woman who says you owe the debt. put that in writing and mail it to them. ask for response in 30 days.
- BigA replies to jamesThat is not how it works, not even close.

- TT replies to Annoyed| 1 replyThey actually ARE legitimate collectors for the IRS. Look at the IRS website for more information. You should not ignore them.
- BigA replies to TTWell, I can see you are not that intelligent. First you are replying to a post that was clearly made a year ago and you expect them to see it. Second, you did not read the other posts where it clearly says that first you get letters from the IRS telling you that they are going to send you to a debt collector. That debt collector, then must follow collection laws while trying to collect on this alleged debt.

- TinaThis number calls my phone number looking for my boyfriend. I ask who’s this what’s your name what is this call about. Didn’t catch her first name but last name is Delgado and she tells me she cant tell me anything. Handed my bf the phone and she tells him she’s calling from converse on behalf of the IRS and she’s calling to help set up payments and all she needs to do is verify him. Then she asks him what’s your first five digits of your ssn. I IMMEDIATELY tell my bf DO NOT GIVE HER THAT. My bf isn’t really smart when it comes to providing info like that to anybody so I’m glad he had the phone on speaker and caught it before he said a peep. Then she goes on to say she will be resending a letter he should’ve gotten and that if he needs to confirm who they are we can look up on the IRS website. Psh sure lady.

- Concerned| 1 replyI’ve been in debt recovery for 20 years. This company and its representatives are unprofessional and operating outside of the scope of the FDCPA. Not only are they using scare tactics, they are divulging personal information to third parties. I received a call in reference to a debt for my sibling from 2000! Word of advice, request validation of the debt in writing. Do not give any personal information nor verify any. Contact the original creditor AND file a complaint.

- BigA replies to ConcernedI would be more worried about some scam debt recovery company taking your money for the last 20 years.
P.S. There is no reason to contact the original creditor. That is not how the law is written, which is why you ask for debt validation. - 8444665519LM stating Conserve collecting on an account nothing else

- MaxNever got an actual call, just a bunch of silent messages. One of the messages sounded like it had some sort of crowd in the background with a female voice saying something I couldn't make out because it was so crackly, sounded like a buttdial, all the other messages were silent though. Just blocked the number since I assumed it was some sort of scammer. The issue is I've been getting these same types of voicemails from several different numbers, almost as if they're changing their number and calling me over and over again(even when I never get the calls to start with) so I'm not sure what's happening, I just keep blocking the numbers
