- Michael replies to cindyThe machine you're thinking of isn't related to this particular call. And there's both a machine and a computer program that does what you're mentioning. The software comes from firms like 'Caller ID 4 U' that will sell you a program that allows you to 'spoof' the originating number and name of the call, and is used by telemarketers, debt collectors and others who don't want you to know who's calling. The machine is called an 'auto-dialer', which generates the phone number to call. Put them together, and you have a system. Now, the 'caller ID' software has a new feature: when combined with the auto-dialer, the software looks at the number to be called, and generates a calling number that's in the same area code and with the same 3 digit prefix as the number to be called. You're more likely to answer it if it appears to be a local call - and then the caller has you.
They get smarter all the time. - Cowboy15Caller ID “Institutevoter” so does sound like it could be pollster, but no way of telling whether legitimate, or for whom or what cause they are conducting the poll. There are numerous Google hits containing the character string "…institute voter…"
- AZDONThink they have been calling on another number and do not answer but does get irritating.

- Pat replies to cindyThey asked for my husband by name as well, first and last, though she couldn't pronounce it. Claimed it was a business matter. I said I am handling his business affairs, and she asked me if I had power of attorney, and when I said I do, she said it was a public opinion survey. I informed her that a public opinion survey is NOT A BUSINESS MATTER. She hung up.
- Pat replies to DoctorJWoodyI don't think it's legitimate. They told me it was a business matter. Political polls are not business matters. They then told me it was a public opinion poll. It cannot be both. She lied. Since when do legitimate pollsters lie? A legitimate pollster will tell you the name of their company. This caller doesn't. It's not on the caller ID, and she doesn't tell you. When we got legitimate calls from Nielsen or Gallup, it always had their name on the caller ID.

- Enough already!!| 1 replyGot a call at 8:56 pm (CST). Really????? Guy was way to chill to not be on something. I told him at almost 9 pm at night, it had better be important. Told me his name and that he was conducting a poll. I cut him off and informed him that 1) a poll is NOT an important call at 9 pm and 2) we don't do polls. The do not call list is a joke with all the loop holes...doesn't do a bit of good to tell them you're on it and to stop calling.

- BigA replies to Enough already!!That is because there are no "loopholes" The DNC was designed to stop sales calls and sales calls only. People that take the time to read know this.
What the Do Not Call lists covers and doesn’t cover and why: https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0108-national-do-not-call-registryQuote:If I register my number, will ALL unwanted calls stop?
No, the Do Not Call Registry prohibits sales calls. You still may receive political calls, charitable calls, debt collection calls, informational calls, and telephone survey calls.
In addition, companies may still call if you’ve recently done business with the company, or if you’ve given the company written permission to call you. However, if you ask a company not to call you again, it must honor your request. Record the date of your request - Linda ElmI have been able to eliminate most of these scammers. How? I talk like a junior high teen and just go on about my boyfriend, nail polish.....they hang up. Or I act like I have dementia and keep talking like caller is my "bad" child and should be here now and stop this calling ......on about his good brother who stops by.....keep going until he/she hangs up on me. Within a 3 week period, the calls stopped. American has a do not disturb registry, and it appears these out of country scammers have a similar way to report "crazy - do not call" numbers.
